Chapter 152: A Lot To Discuss
The woman in front of Chang Xuefeng seemed to freeze for a second when she heard his threat, but then she quickly recovered. "You can’t kill me," she announced, a smirk on her face. "Hattie said to tell you that she likes me. She even went so far as to say that it would save my life one day."
Chang Xuefeng let loose a string of curse words that couldn’t be translated into English. "Fine. I’ll tear everything else down around you, but I will make sure that you walk away from everything. I am sure that that will satisfy Hattie."
"We still can’t let you pass," shrugged the woman, and her face did look apologetic as she spoke. "Ms. LaRue has orders to kill you on sight; the best thing you can do is leave for now. Hattie should be able to leave on a mission in the next few months or so. You can find her then."
"Ms. LaRue currently has her own fucking genie. Do you really think she is just going to let Hattie disappear when she knows damn well Hattie would never come back?"
"It’s a rule," muttered the guard who had lowered his weapon earlier. "Everyone who has registered a power must join a team and hunt for supplies. There is no way out of it."
"And if someone makes a wish that they have all the supplies they could possibly need?" sneered Chang Xuefeng with a shake of his head. No, he knew how this situation would play out, and no one was going to let the goose that laid the golden egg go.
"I won’t let anything bad happen to Hattie. Give it a couple of weeks, and then try to re-enter the commune again. Ms. LaRue is no guard right now, but that won’t last forever."
"When I come back, I will be bringing a version of Death with me, the likes of which you have never seen. Do you understand that? If you see me again, everyone will die."
"That might be for the best," sighed the woman. "Because I have no idea what is right or wrong... and I don’t see that line becoming any more defined."
-----
I was led up to the second floor of the massive tower, and even after these few steps, Delliah was already panting.
"I fucking hate the fact that the power is gone," she cursed under her breath. "No elevators, no hair dryers, no straighteners, nothing. Marcus wanted us on one of the upper floors, but walking up and down these stairs just wasn’t in the cards."
I snorted silently, but otherwise, I didn’t say a word.
Taking me down a long hallway, my Maman stopped at the last door and knocked on it. "Marcus?" she asked, her voice coming out so different than when she was speaking to me. It was cultured and refined and everything that I knew she was not. "I brought Lucinda with me."
Right, I was back to being Lucinda... because heaven forbid that I prefer to be called Hattie.
"Come in," replied a voice on the other side of the heavy wooden door. It was a bit hoarse, like he smoked multiple packs a day, but there was definitely a note of authority to it that I was already hating.
Opening the door, Delliah placed her hand on the small of my back and pushed me forward deeper into the room.
The blood-red carpet over the top of the wooden floor muffled my footsteps as I approached the man behind the massive oak desk. He had to be well into his 40s, maybe even pushing his 50s if the lines and wrinkles were anything to go on.
His hair was turning salt and pepper with a lot more salt than I was sure he was willing to admit to. In fact, it wouldn’t have surprised me if he had even dyed it before the end of the world to give himself a much younger, more handsome appearance.
My guys were hotter.
"You must be Lucinda," he said, coming to his feet as he held out a hand to indicate one of the plush black chairs in front of his desk. "Please, make yourself at home. Delliah has told me a lot about you. You know, there is no reason to be running away at your age."
Keeping my mouth shut was a lot harder than it should have been, but I swallowed back my sarcastic words.
"She knows that now," answered Delliah for me, dabbing the corner of her eye with a handkerchief that seemed to have appeared out of nowhere. "No matter what happened to her out there, I am so grateful to the good Lord for bringing her back to me."
Something told me that the ’good Lord’ had nothing to do with me returning to this hellhole. In fact, I was pretty sure that the ’good Lord’ owed me more than a few favors with how many wishes he didn’t grant.
Marcus shifted his eyes to Delliah before turning his attention back to me. "So, I hear that you have a power," he said, his chest puffing out as he sunk back down into his chair. "You don’t need to worry about anyone taking advantage of your powers. You’ll be staying with your mother and I. Everything you need will be given to you."
I really wanted to roll my eyes, but one of the things about playing a character, I had to stay in the role, no matter how much I wanted to stick a blade in his eye.
Huh... I might need to see someone for this newfound bloodthirstiness.
"You are much too kind," purred Delliah as she grabbed my knee and squeezed it tight. "Lucinda will be more than happy to do whatever it is that you need her to. In fact, I know she will insist on it. She knows that nothing in this world is free."
"You don’t mind granting me one wish?" asked the man in front of me as he cocked his head to the side. "Delliah, why don’t you go and prepare a room for your daughter? She and I have a lot to discuss."
