Chapter 141: What Do You Want?

"You know we don’t accept charity," stated Dante, his face impassive as he looked the woman and child up and down.

When he spoke, the tiny girl turned around to look at him, her eyes wide as she took him in. "I paid with my Teddy," she said, only a slight whisp to her soft voice as she spoke. "Nothing in the world is free."

Dante couldn’t help the snort that came out of him at her words. "You are absolutely right," he agreed, patting her head. "Welcome to the Dragon’s Lair."

"My name is Sophia, and this is my daughter, Libby," interjected the woman, stepping forward. Dante looked her up and down before turning back to Tank.

"A woman, really?" he asked, raising his eyebrow. The last woman who entered this place had tried to kill Hattie... he really didn’t want another female coming into his territory.

Tank shrugged his shoulders before taking the Teddy from Libby and throwing it at Dante. "The mother came with the child. Plus I don’t know how my little Lamb feels about kids, but I know how she feels about Teddies."

"Her Teddy," growled Dante, feeling a pounding in his head as he closed his eyes. "Do you know how to garden?"

The last question was directed at the woman, but it took her a few seconds to realize it. "Y-yes," she stuttered, more than a little confused.

"Fine," grunted Dante, already turning around. "One of the guards will show you where you are going to live. Listen to him and you won’t die."

"What about my daughter?" asked Sophia tentatively.

"What about her?" demanded Dante with a sigh. "This isn’t a daycare, keep her with you and keep her out of trouble. Her eyes are only going to let her get away with so much here."

Sophia’s own eyes widened at that statement, but she didn’t bother to reply. Tank carefully placed Libby on the ground before following after Dante.

"Hello," said a soft voice behind her. Spinning around, Sophia’s eyes went wide as she stared at the handsome man in front of her. "I’m Bishop. I’ll show you where you can sleep tonight. Tomorrow morning, I’ll take you to the warehouse where we are storing the seeds. Is that okay with you?"

His voice was so soft and soothing that Sophia couldn’t help but nod her head in agreement, even though she only heard half of the things coming out of his mouth.

Bishop smiled at the petite woman and held out his hand to take her little girl. "I’m afraid that we don’t have much, but there is some food and water. If you are missing anything or need anything, just let me know, and I’ll look after it."

Once again, Sophia nodded her head as Libby climbed into Bishop’s arms. This place really might be the perfect place to start their new life... it was already heads and tails better than where they were staying in the mall.

Quietly, Sophia followed behind Bishop and her daughter as the tension left her shoulders. Yeah, here was the perfect place to start over.

For a world where humans no longer controlled the numbers, there were still a lot of humans around to ruin his day.

Luca stared through the binoculars at the bandit camp in front of him. They were smart, he would give them that. They built their little fort deep in the forest with trees and marsh surrounding them.

He could see the slides from the gators, indicating that it was heavy with swamp activity. Or, the gators were finding a new source of food.

"Dimitri," growled Luca, lowering the binoculars. "You’re up."

Dimitri chuckled low under his breath as he shrugged his shoulders. As soon as he stepped forward, thin metal armor arose from his skin, creating yet another barrier between his clothes and his body.

The metal was flexible, like a second skin, but was also strong enough to stop bullets, arrows, and anything else the survivors managed to throw at him. Plus, watching the fear on the people’s faces as, despite their best efforts, nothing could stop him was almost becoming enjoyable.

Rolling his neck, the metal continued upward until it rested just under his chin, completely encasing his vulnerable neck.

Rushing forward, he ignored the shouts of guards as they tried to stop him. Bullets fell off him like raindrops as he continued forward. Dropping his center of gravity, he focused on the wooden doors in front of him.

They crumbled under him like a house made of blocks, and he felt the others rushing in behind him. Désiré laughed joyfully as he held his hands forward, shooting flames at the three watch towers in each corner of the fort.

People screamed as they fell from the towers, trying to get away from the flames, only to die from a broken neck.

"Who are you?" demanded a man as he strolled forward. He looked calm and composed, but the ten or so men behind him were able to hide their fear as well. "You are not welcome here."

"We’re the Sins," answered Luca as Ronan, Max, Salvatore, and Désiré parted to let their head approach.

"What do you want?" demanded the leader, his eyes dancing around at the six Sins. Black mist poured out of Ronan’s hands to form a layer of fog at his feet.

"Now that is a loaded question if I ever heard one," chuckled Luca as he pulled a chair out of his space and sat down on it. He might have been looking up at the man who was both taller and more muscular than him, but everyone knew exactly who had the power. "What do I want?"

Suddenly, Dimitri felt a pain in his head like he had never felt before. However, instead of dropping to his feet and screaming, he stood stoically behind Luca, refusing to show any weakness.

"Impressive," grunted the voice in his head. Dimitri didn’t so much as flinch at the word, but he was starting to sweat. They were in the middle of an enemy camp, and this was not the time to be distracted by a voice that rarely spoke to him.

"I couldn’t agree more," grunted the voice. "So, this is what is going to happen. I am going to take over your body in a few days, whether you like it or not. The only thing you have a say in is whether you will maintain a part of your soul or not. The choice is yours."
