Chapter 118: Trying To Survive
"If you are unsure, then go back to René," sighed Luca, clasping a hand on Max’s shoulder. "You know we will never force you to do something you don’t want to do. Becoming the villain isn’t for everyone."
"So dramatic," grunted Dimitri as a silver metal seemed to ooze from his skin, encasing his knuckles in the hard surface. "Who’s dumb enough ta call demselves de villain? We be Prince Charmin’s... creatin’ a kingdom fer our woman."
"I’s feel like ma and pa be goin’ through a divorce," sighed Max, closing his eyes. "And dey both want me."
"Dat’s where you be wrong," chuckled Ronan as he strolled forward, his hands turning black as his mist rose out of him. "Neither ma nor pa wants ya. Dey knows who’s de favorite."
"Quiet." Luca’s voice cut through the chatter. He scanned the survivors’ camp, calculating everything. They had set up under an overpass, using the structure for protection. Whoever was leading them wasn’t dumb enough to leave them completely unprotected, which meant that they were expecting some company.
The only problem was if they were expecting humans or if they knew something Luca and the others didn’t.
Oh well, that was a future problem. Right now, it was time to take the first step of the rest of their lives and get their hands dirty.
"They’ve got food, water, and supplies," Luca announced. "We’ll take it all. They won’t need it where they are going.
Salvatore tilted his head, the faintest hint of a smile on his face.
"Burn."
Ronan casually saluted, disappearing into the shadows on both sides of the highway, using the abandoned cars as cover. He was best in high positions, but he couldn’t bring himself to do that. He needed to know what the black mist on his hands meant.
And that meant using it on a human.
Could they have tried to find a horde of zombies? Of course, they could have. It was the fucking zombie apocalypse, for fucks sake. The sound of a gun being fired would have brought a whole horde of the stupid ones. But when these people were standing in their way?
Well, they should complain to the fates for putting them in the wrong place at the wrong time.
Luca watched as Ronan disappeared before waving his hand. Sending out a stiff wind, he quickly extinguished all of the fires, leaving only a single one in the center of the camp.
The survivors should know who they were dealing with before they died.
As soon as Luca gave the signal, the rest of the men raced forward, gleams of delight on their faces as they finally got to stretch their muscles. Even Max, after all his second-guessing, was enjoying himself, his laughter echoing amongst the screams of the survivors as he shook the very ground they were standing on.
Men shouted and started firing randomly, their aim off as they tried to keep their balance as the earth continued to roll out of control.
With a wave of his hand, Dimitri gathered each one of the bullets, spinning them around and using them to pierce the men with the guns. While he wasn’t laughing out loud, the smile on his face was enough to cause fear.
Désiré, not to be outdone, found a few of the men who had been trying to slip away and threw stunning orange and red balls of fire at them. He stopped for a moment, watching the humans being consumed by the flames, their screams hitting him like nothing ever had before.
"New pleasure unlocked," he chuckled to himself. Making a fist of his hand, he extinguished the flames, letting the people drop to the ground in agony. "Next time," he murmured as he crouched down next to them. "Maybe try to run faster."
One of the men, hidden in a tent, exploded out of it, clutching a crowbar over his head as he screamed his attack. His target simply rolled his eyes before grabbing the crowbar and forcing it to melt. "Nice try," laughed Dimitri, his eyes shining from the fire still burning in the center of the camp. "But metal isn’t going to hurt me."
Without warning, he punched the other man in the face, causing the front of his skull to cave in, killing him instantly.
"Huh," grunted Ronan as he crouched down beside the dead man. "Nice trick."
Dimitri looked at his fist before shrugging his shoulders. "It worked. Whadda ’bout you? Figure out de pixie dust yet, Tink?"
Ronan looked at Dimitri in disgust before pointing his finger at one of the men trying to hide behind the tent. Dimitri watched as the black mist engulfed the man, causing him to drop to his knees, screaming in pain.
Black boils started to appear all over his skin as lesions and chunks of flesh began to come off his body. The more Ronan’s victim tried to stop it, the faster they fell until there was nothing left but a skeleton, still on its knees.
Dimitri grunted at Ronan’s smug look before smacking the other man on his back. "I’s still likes mine better," he sniffed, refusing to admit that it was pretty cool to kill someone like that.
"I’s always knew I be poison," chuckled Ronan, shrugging his shoulders as he waved his hand again. This time, more than half of the women fell to the floor, screaming as they rotted from the outside in.
---
Once the chaos started to die back a bit, Luca entered the camp, looking around at the destruction that his brothers had managed to accomplish in such a short period of time.
A woman, clearly distraught, raced out of her tent; a younger woman pulled behind her as the two of them dropped to their knees.
"You can’t do this," wailed the first woman while the second one didn’t bother to say anything. She simply looked up at Luca, a slight smile reflecting in her eyes, even though her face was blank. "We are just trying to survive. The same as everyone else."
