Chapter 105: It Worked Perfectly
The guard, whose name turned out to be Feng Niu, took me to what looked to be a small shack on the other side of the pit.
There were a lot of guys sitting around, their clothes hanging off their bodies as they waited for their turn in the ring. No one bothered to speak, and not a single person had food in their hands, even though there was clearly a reaver ready to feed them.
"Zhu Gen!" called out Feng Niu as he gripped my elbow, leading me deeper into the open area. It wasn’t a room, but it wasn’t outside either. "Meet the Harbinger! She just won her first fight today! Fastest time so far, too!"
The reaver with the spoon and half his bottom jaw missing nodded his head, grinning at me awkwardly. "Do you have enough for a bun?" he asked, his words coming out weird without part of his mouth.
"Not only a bun," chuckled Feng Niu excitedly. "She’ll have enough for a full menu for the next few days!" My guard held up both of his hands, full of my coins. While they still looked like the money I was used to in Country M, it was now official that I was probably nowhere near home.
Out of the corner of my eye, I could see a few men turning their attention to me. The look on their faces shifted between caution and greed, and I had no idea which one would win at the end of the day. But that didn’t matter.
I would never give up what was meant to be mine.
And that money was mine.
Vanishing the money I had tightly gripped in my hand, I turned to look at Feng Niu. "Could I treat you to a meal?" I asked, cocking my head to the side. "I know it’s not much, but you have been so kind to me."
I mean, if you ignore the fact that he shocked me with a cattle prod, watched me get changed, and threw me into a pit... he was a perfect Saint to me.
"I’m good," chuckled Feng Niu. "They’ll feed us later." Ever so carefully, he handed over the pile of coins into my hand with a gleam in his eyes. "You take care of this. You won’t get any more until the next time you are in the pit, whenever that happens to be."
Nodding my head, I gave the reaver a bright smile. "Of course! I’ll take good care of it."
Seriously, just how dumb did this reaver think that I was? Did he really think that I was going to put all my trust in him that quickly?
Sure, he was somewhat nice to me, but he just told everyone in this room that I had more than enough money for a bun, meat, and porridge for the next few days. Then he made a big show about giving me the money back and telling me to make sure that I kept it safe.
The undead dude was making sure that I had a giant target on my back... I’d almost be hurt at how much he wanted me dead. But since the feeling was completely mutual, I wouldn’t take it too personally.
Not wanting all of his efforts to be in vain, I made sure to skip toward the canteen, a bright smile on my face. It would have been so much better if I was short and wearing my normal outfit, but I was going to correct that as soon as possible.
"Um," I murmured, looking up at the reaver in front of me, Zhu Gen, with an unsure smile. "How much can I get for this?" I asked, cocking my head to the side.
Holding up both hands full of coins, I waited to see how the man would reply.
Every so carefully, the reaver took nine coins out of the pile with a smile of his own. "This will be enough to get you a bun, some meat, and the porridge."
Nodding my head, I ’carefully’ transferred the coins to one hand so that I could try and balance all the food given to me by the cook.
Turning around, I saw that Feng Niu had left me all by my lonesome. Finding an empty table, I let the coins drop from my hands and carefully put my food down on the table.
Taking my seat, I cocked my head to the side as I stared at the green bun on my left. Given the light streaks of blue in the middle of the green circles, I was willing to bet that the color wasn’t from food coloring.
And if they were willing to feed us moldy buns...
"Don’t touch the meat," grunted Gluttony in my head. "It’s human meat."
Feeling every muscle in my body relax at his voice, I fought back the tears as I stared at the meat. ’I thought you guys had left me,’ I admitted in my head. ’I haven’t heard from you in a while.’ I wasn’t even going to think about his announcement.
Human meat could either mean that it was meat suitable for humans to eat or meat made from humans. But I knew which way he was implying.
"Sorry about that, Pudding Cup," chuckled Gluttony, but I could hear the strain in his voice as he spoke to me. "Just dealing with so crap in Hell... and Greed is a little under the weather."
’I’m guessing that you six had something to do with my new location?’ I asked, stabbing my finger into the porridge. For something that cost me four coins, I could count the number of rice in the bowl.
"Thus, Greed being a bit under the weather," admitted Gluttony. "It took the energy of the seven souls, plus his own, to transport you to someone who could heal you. Did it work?"
I thought about the Camp that I had found myself in.
’It worked perfectly,’ I assured him, a bright smile on my face. ’I am all fixed up. She even cured my blindness! Greed couldn’t have picked a better person to send me to!’
