Chapter 31: We have a daddy!
Chapter 31
"—make sure your mommy and daddy come too, there’s a special section for parents." The classroom was filled with cheering and excitement from the pupils after their teacher briefly announced the upcoming sport activities.
Ms. Tina smiled warmly, looking at the kids. "I’m coming," she said, turning to leave but stopped at the door frame. Her eyes narrowed at each pupil. "Don’t make a noise. I’ll be back in a jiffy," she said and left.
A few kids started chatting excitedly about their daddies bringing new cars, buying rewards and all. Hanith’s ear picked up—he wanted to join and also proudly boast about his father too.
Uncle Piano.
Amongst the pupils, a loud boy stood on the table, his shoulder blade raised. "My daddy will help me train and I’ll win!"
Other kids started talking about their fathers as Hanith turned a little, sitting quietly. "My daddy is coming too," his voice was soft yet laced with happiness as he felt excitement rush in him.
His daddy.
He smiled, remembering Uncle Piano’s attentiveness towards him. Hanith could recall asking his twin sister how she could so easily be comfortable with their new father. His sister responded, "I know you like him too. Aren’t you happy we have a father now? Weren’t you the one who wished for Uncle Piano to be our father? Aren’t you the one who wishes for uncle Piano to be our father?"
A smile found its way to his lips until he noticed how silent the classroom was. He raised his head as saw the pupils’ eyes zeroed on Hanith who wanted anything but to be seen. He fiddled with his fingers.
The loud, overweight pupil known for bullying—Tyler—snorted in disbelief. "You don’t even have a dad," he laughed mockingly. "He’s never brought you to school or picked you up..." he said. "That means you’re lying," and the other pupils laughed.
Hanith’s face flushed red in embarrassment, his earlier happy memory forgotten. He shifted in his seat. "I have a daddy. He also—" he whispered, trying to defend himself.
Tyler didn’t stop, walking over to Hanith. His heavy steps made the other kids move away.
"You’re lying! You’re just jealous. You and your sister don’t even know what a dad looks like," he sneered. Then, in a flash, he pushed Hanith backward off his chair.
Jasmine, who ducked her head into Hanith’s classroom, saw her brother hit the floor. She had only come to check on her brother and gush about how Uncle Piano and Uncle Matthew would be there—only to see that scene.
"You!" Jasmine left the doorway and stomped over to the boy, her eyes blazing with fury while all heads turned to her.
No one—absolutely no one—was allowed to bully her twin brother!
"How dare you push my brother!" she yelled.
Jasmine pushed Tyler off his feet. He barely reacted before Jasmine grabbed a pencil from the table and smacked him across the arm with it repeatedly.
"Please, please!" Tyler cried dramatically as other kids gasped in shock from seeing Tyler being beaten while some screamed in fear.
The teacher, hearing the scream on her way back, rushed in to see Jasmine on Tyler, hitting him continuously.
When the kids saw Ms. Tina enter, they quickly went behind her to hide. The teacher’s eyes widened, looking at Hanith on the floor. She quickly pulled Hanith up, dragged Jasmine off Tyler, and helped Tyler up.
Then she pulled all three to the headmaster’s office.
.
In the office, the twins sat quietly, heads bowed, as Tyler held his arm, tears rolling down his cheeks, crying and sniffing. His arm was red with marks.
The headmaster sighed, rubbing the bridge of her nose, already feeling a headache coming as she dropped the phone after calling the kids’ parents.
Within some minutes, Katherine burst into the office, the first to arrive—like maybe she’d been expecting the call. She was breathless, her eyes darting across the room only to stop on her kids.
She immediately went to them and hugged Jasmine and Hanith tightly. "What happened?" she asked, crouching down and cupping their cheeks.
"So—" the headmaster began, explaining everything that happened, thanks to the CCTV camera in the room.
"I’m so sorry for the inconvenience," Katherine said to the headmaster after she finished reiterating the incident, and then turned to Jasmine. "You don’t hurt people, Jasmine." she scolded gently.
"But he pushed Hanith!" she grumbled, her arms folded on her chest. "and you said I should always protect my brother." her cute face pulled up in a scowl.
Katherine caressed Jasmine’s red hand. "Even if they’re mean."
Jasmine didn’t respond—only huffed and whipped her face away.
The door was yanked open as Tyler’s mother stormed in—a loud, heavy-set woman, charging in aggressively. Katherine quickly glanced from the woman to her son and knew immediately they were related.
"Where’s the girl that hit my boy?!" The woman’s voice was thick, which made Katherine straighten, clearly overwhelmed by the woman’s presence.
"I’m truly sorry," Katherine started, bowing slightly, trying to appease the mother. "My daughter shouldn’t have done that—"
"Your daughter hit my boy!" the woman’s eyes blazed with anger as she interrupted Katherine.
Katherine’s eyes narrowed just slightly. Her voice was cool, and she couldn’t help but give a snarky response under her breath. "Did she?"
"What did you say?"
Katherine rolled her eyes and muttered. "Nothing."
The woman scoffed. "This is what happens when kids grow up with no father. I should sue!"
"We have a daddy!" Jasmine yelled out defiantly from where she was sitting. Her voice was loud, strong, and filled with conviction.
The woman laughed sarcastically, looking at the headmaster like Jasmine just proved her point.
"See? Now she’s making things up. This is what I mean—fatherless children always have no manners!"
Katherine clenched her jaw. Her lips pressed into a tight smile. Her nose scrunched slightly in barely contained annoyance.
"And your child who grew up with a father—how did he become?" Katherine said. "Got beaten by a girl." Tyler’s face turned red in humiliation.
"What?"
"You heard what I said," Katherine stated. "I’m not sorry your weak-ass boy got beaten by a girl half his size, and I won’t stand here while you try to talk down on my children."
The woman scoffed again, stepping closer to Katherine—maybe thinking her size would intimidate her.
"And what exactly can you do?" she asked, jabbing her shoulder and middle finger into Katherine.
"Are you talking about my family?"
The room went still as a familiar, deep baritone voice cut through the tension and the door creaked open behind them.
Everyone turned toward the voice that came in like a knight in shining armor—well, rather, a father ready to defend.
Aaron stood in the doorway.
