Awakening to a Special-Grade Explorer -
Vol. 4 - Ch. 178 - A moment of respite and the sudden disaster
After the initial confusion, the rest of the explorers managed to successfully escape from the group of underlings, while the later were unable to chase after them. Hell, the underlings suddenly stopped chasing after them once they had crossed a certain range.
The reason was still shrouded in mystery, yet to be unravelled.
Kujou, on the other hand, seemed to have guessed this might happen.
This situation wasn't any different than 8 years ago, during the incident of 'Petrification Witch - Stone Wonder Zero', where the underlings of said zero-grade monster held the same condition where they couldn't leave from within the range of 3km of parent body.
Kujou had gone through the record of similar catastrophic monsters in the due time and reached the conclusion that maybe the same restriction would be applied to underlings in this case as well.
It was this conviction that she unhesitatingly jumped for retreat.
"Now what, huh......"
Kujou gazed at the unscathed faces of her guild members returning safely to their spot on the cliff and contemplated on the future strategy.
She had just been going through the possibilities when an explorer bolted toward their direction at terrific speed from a distance.
Kujou suddenly shifted up her gaze.
"So even Alex has made a temporary retreat huh, as expected. I guess then folks from China should be taking the same action."
The said approaching explorer was a member of Alex's guild and someone tasked to pass messages.
The regular communication modes were hindered in Mallorca starting from the 20th floor. As a matter of fact, this setting was the story of every dungeon. The regular communication methods were just impossible to use when the environment was filled with MP atoms above a certain threshold. The devices such as smartphones were no better than tin boxes.
In fact, the Orelina earlier used for communication had been utilising some extraordinary means to be feasible. However even that Orelina wasn't an sure-fire method either to communicate, as could be imagined from no follow up communication.
The messenger guy confirmed the visual sighting of the Chariot group and further upped the speed.
"Kujou! I have a letter from the leader!"
'Thanks for the effort,' Kujou complimented the erratically breathing---indicator of the distance he had crossed in a short time---messenger guy for his effort as she took the small note from him---seemingly from a memo pad.
Tenji also quietly tried to peep on the content of the letter that Kujou unfolded to check out of curiosity but it was written in such cryptic format that he couldn't make a head or tail out of it.
(Ahaha, what was I expecting? No one said monsters can't read, right......hmm, there's still some underlying meaning hard to understand. The road to pro isn't a straight one huh.)
While Tenji marvelled at the depth of a professional's meticulousness, Kujou looked up from the letter. She transferred her troubled gaze to Honnou Itagaki and inquired.
"It says Chief Monster is searching for 'something'."
Her words were short.
"Something......it really can't go any vaguer."
"Well, likewise. Heck, I can't even wrap my head around how he figured that is looking for 'something.' He's such a stone when it comes to reading air that I am surprised he can tell the thoughts of a monster."
"Beat me. Then again, it's not like you're any better at reading air."
"You're the last person I want to hear it from."
"Perhaps, yeah."
It was like seeing a middle-aged married couple retorting against each other...Tenji thought as he looked at them from the sideline.
It was a bit far-fetched to look at them as a couple considering their decade apart age, but then again, it wasn't that rare to see a couple with such an age gap.
(Well, Honnou-san is already married though. But their gears sure messed well against each other huh, or is it just me...?)
By now, the tense air that had been hovering over the over guild had mostly unravelled, perhaps because they were able to take a respite away from the treacherous battlefield.
It wasn't like they had let down their guard, but they certainly weren't as anxious as before.
All was good so far---until it appeared suddenly.
