Awakening of the Scheming Wife -
Chapter 60: Past? No!
Chapter 60: Past? No!
They opened the door, and Vernon and Helena entered.
"Uncle Hubert," Helena greeted him with a smile.
During their previous call, Hubert had said that he was a good friend of her mother’s and hence she should address him as such.
"Helena? Come here," Hubert smiled and welcomed them in. His eyes never left Helena’s face.
This was the first time he met her, after all.
The last time at the party, he had met Vernon but not Helena. So, he never knew what she looked like.
They met and sat opposite each other. They had a small talk for a little while. Mostly about Helena’s mother and Helena’s life in general.
The elder asked her a few questions regarding her, and the couple answered him patiently to each and every one of them.
"Uncle Hubert, what exactly was my mom searching for when she was alive? She had never talked about that to me before. But I found that she was searching through multiple hospitals and was looking through DNA databases everywhere.
"I also found that during her accident, she was on the way from another hospital visit as well. She was clearly invested in finding someone. Who is it?" Helena went to the topic and asked him directly.
If she wanted him to answer her truthfully, she thought that she should be open and tell him everything she knew.
Hubert was stunned when he heard her words. He never thought that she found out about her mother’s actions.
"Uncle Hubert," Seeing him in a daze, Helena called out to him and asked again, "Who is it?"
Hubert sighed. He took a sip of coffee in front of him. He took a deep breath and looked at her, "Do you know that she didn’t want you to find out about that matter?"
Helena pursed her lips. "Seeing how she was doing everything in secret, I could guess. But I don’t understand why she has to do that."
"She had her reasons. She never wanted you to find this out about her," Hubert said in all seriousness.
Helena blinked her eyes. She felt her chest itch. She calmed herself down and said again, "I understand. But, Uncle Hubert, my mother is gone now. I understand she had her reasons to keep it away from me. But now that she had gone, shouldn’t there be someone who could continue doing what she was doing? Shouldn’t someone end what she had started?
"I don’t think there is anyone else in this world who would want to continue what my mother wanted to do, right?"
Hubert was once again stunned by this young lady in front of him. He couldn’t react for a while.
But after thinking about her words for a while, he felt that she was right as well.
He nodded. "I understand. I will tell you. This is a story of your mother’s past. How much do you know about your mother’s family?" He asked her.
Helena looked at him. She thought for a while. She shook her head, "Actually I don’t know much. She just said that she had no ties with her family anymore. So, she never talked about them much."
Hubert sighed, "So, you don’t know the reason they never contacted each other?"
Helena sincerely shook her head.
"Okay. So, do you know that your mother had an older brother?" Hubert asked, ready to tell her the past.
Helena nodded, "That did come up a few times."
Hubert nodded, "Hmm. I think this was around twenty-five to twenty-six years ago. At that time, your mom’s brother, your uncle, had a son. He was around a year or two at that time.
"So, he was your brother. The first born in your mother’s family. He was doted on the most by everyone. Your mother as well. She was the fun aunt that your brother enjoyed having company with."
Helena couldn’t help but frown. She had a bad feeling about where this was going.
Hubert took another sip of coffee.
Helena’s heart was beating wildly and her palms started to sweat for some reason.
Vernon saw this and gently held her hand and squeezed it.
Helena looked at him and he gave her an assuring gaze with a nod. He was there with her no matter what.
She understood what he meant and nodded back.
She took a deep breath and looked back at Hubert, waiting for him to continue the story.
"You should have guessed by now. Your brother was lost. He was lost when he was under your mother’s care.
"She searched for him frantically and so did her family but to no avail. Many things happened during that time.
"In the end, your mother felt guilty to face her brother and her family for losing her nephew. Her family blamed her for the same as well.
"That was the reason, they cut ties with each other. She left the city and came to your place where she met your father, fell in love and married him.
"But, no matter what, she did not forget about searching for your brother.
"When that incident happened, I just joined the police station. I was young. I was your mother’s classmate and a good friend. So, of course I helped her to find your brother as well.
"At that time, when we found nothing, we had no choice but to stop the search. There were no clues left to follow at all.
"Then, after all these years, something happened."
He paused and looked at them.
Helena stiffened. She continued looking at him, waiting for him to continue.
"Since there were no clues all these years, we had kept an eye on all the databases - including missing reports, human trafficking reports, and also medical reports.
"A few months ago, we suddenly got a clue. Someone with your brother’s DNA appeared in the list of a medical record. We got hopeful and looked for that report."
Helena sat at the edge of her seat. "Did you find my brother?"
