Chapter 48: Mission? Abort!
Chapter 48: Mission? Abort!
"Don’t worry. Mom is here," Mother Jeffery held Helena’s hand and patted gently to comfort her. She then looked at the others and warned them, "Who dares to bully my kids? Why aren’t you all behaving like elders and joining in the fun instead?"
"Hey, you can’t say that. They were already being lovey-dovey before us. We just wanted them to continue. That’s all. How can you accuse us?" One chuckled and did not care about the warning in her eyes at all.
Everyone was friends anyway. No one would get angry or scared by the others just because of a few words.
Everything was for fun, and no one took anything to heart.
"You oldies!!" Mother Jeffery sighed.
She patted the back of Helena’s hand and said calmly, "You both leave. I will take care of them."
"Thank you, mom," Helena muttered, and she ran away with Vernon.
Seeing their fleeing backs, everyone laughed out loud - including Mother Jeffery.
"Donna, your kids are cute." Someone in the crowd chuckled and commented.
"Haha. Of course, they are cute. Don’t you see who their mother is?" Mother Jeffery looked proud as she even took it as a compliment for herself on the way.
Everyone clicked their tongues in her face because of her shamelessness and even scolded her.
Just like that, the topic had changed and the elders continued having fun while drinking.
On the other side, Vernon and Helena ran away and found an empty spot.
Helena started to pat her chest to calm her beating heart, "Damn it. That was nerve-wracking. I never knew all the elders were like that before. I never saw them being so dirty like that. Did you?"
Vernon shook his head, "Me neither. I thought they were always so serious and wanted to beat their irresponsible children at every chance they got. Who would have thought? They were the ones who were being irresponsible and shameless in front of us, children."
Vernon belonged to the group of men who were the ’rich second-generation kids’ who liked to party around and have fun every day.
All the elders there were the parents of most of his friends.
So what he knew of all those elders were from his friends and they always said that they were scared of their parents.
From their words, Vernon had a serious image of all these elders.
But that preconceived image was destroyed in an instant during the party.
"I know, right? Ugh. I am so thirsty. My throat dried up under all their fiery gazes. Pass me that glass of apple juice," Helena asked Vernon, pointing her finger at the glass.
Vernon passed the glass to her immediately, "Drink slowly."
"Mhmm," Helena nodded, but she still gulped the entire glass in a single sip.
Vernon’s lips twitched. He knew she would do that.
He had seen her for so many years. He knew that when she was thirsty, she would gulp the water down and then start coughing.
Just as he thought, she choked and started to cough.
He patted her back and gave her another glass, "Here. Drink this one. This time slowly. Really slow."
Helena couldn’t reply and she nodded as she took the glass to drink.
Vernon did not leave the glass and helped her hold it. Now, Helena couldn’t tilt the glass more even if she wanted to. She had no choice but to drink it slowly.
While drinking, she glared at Vernon for not trusting her.
Vernon did not care and calmly made her drink slowly. Once the glass was empty, he took it from her hand and placed it on the table.
"I never knew you could nag like my mother," Helena pouted and softly complained.
But her eyes did not really blame him at all. She felt blissful.
Vernon did not say anything.
He just ignored her and took a glass for himself and drank from it.
As soon as he tasted the ’apple juice’ he frowned. He looked at Helena and asked, "Didn’t you find the taste different from apple juice when you drank it?"
"Huh?" He saw her flushed cheeks as she asked in a daze.
"..." Vernon did not know how to react at all. Everyone knew Helena had low alcohol tolerance. So no one made her drink before. Even during their wedding banquet, she drank juice, and no one complained.
Everyone was always careful around her so that she wouldn’t drink alcohol, even by mistake.
But now, she was drunk.
Her eyes moist, cheeks crimson red, she looked like a doll.
She gently swayed around along with the wind, not knowing how to stand straight.
Vernon held her by the waist and asked her gently, "Are you okay?"
"Huh?" Drunk Helena was dumb. She wouldn’t understand what the others were saying to her at all.
She blinked her dewy, round eyes in confusion.
Vernon used his index finger to gently poke her cheek, "Do you remember where we are?"
Helena tilted her head, not understanding his question. Then she shook her head.
He did not know if that was her answer or if she misunderstood his question and answered something else.
Anyway, she was out of sorts, and there was no hope in her anymore.
She had completely forgotten about their purpose in coming to this party.
"Can you remember why we came to this party?" He still tried and asked her once.
Helena blinked once again. Just as he lost hope, he heard her speaking, "For my mom."
Vernon looked at her dazed expression and sighed.
Even when she lost all her senses, when it was about her mother, she would still somehow bring herself to keep sane.
"Can you meet the commissioner now? Can you talk to him?" Vernon did not like the idea, but he still had to ask her.
Helena tilted her head to the side once again. "I want to. But... But... How can I? I... can’t... meet... him.. like this,... right?"
After getting drunk, her speech was slow. A bit too slow.
