Chapter 43: Leon is a creep? Maybe!

He steeled himself and turned to his father-in-law, "Ehehe. I am sorry, father."

"..." Father Ford’s lips twitched. He did not know if he should be happy or sad that his son-in-law followed his daughter’s words and was even scared of her.

"Ehem. We have an important event we have to attend tonight. So, we have no choice either. We need to leave now if we could get ready and attend it," Vernon said seriously.

Looking at his serious expression, Father Ford was unsure if he was telling the truth or not. Anyway, he already understood that his daughter wouldn’t stay no matter what. So he casually nodded and let them leave.

Just when they reached the door, Helena stopped. Without turning back, she spoke, "I will inform you of the time for our trip. Be ready by then."

Father Ford’s lowered head jerked upwards at once. He excitedly nodded, "Okay, okay. Take care on your way. Don’t rush. Be careful. Call me if you need anything."

His eyes watered as he gave a bunch of instructions to her even though he couldn’t see her face. He was excited that his daughter talked to him - with no outsiders present.

Helena could hear the tremble in his voice. She bit her lower lip to stop herself from turning around to face him.

She clenched her fist and walked away.

Vernon looked at the father and daughter duo in confusion before he followed his wife out.

He really wanted to know what the problem between them was. In his previous life, such a problem never existed. This made him even more curious.

He tried to find it by listening to her inner voice but to no avail.

She subconsciously avoided even thinking about the problem. All he could hear was how she was angry at her father and also how hurt she was by his ’actions’.

Helena was the only daughter of the Fords. So she was pampered like a princess her whole life by both her mother and father.

Now that she has lost her mother, she should be the closest to her father.

So, he couldn’t understand what Father Ford had done that made his daughter lose all her trust in him.

"Great thinking, lying about the party." Once they got into the car, Helena praised Vernon.

"I wasn’t lying. There really is a party for us to attend." Vernon said seriously.

"Oh? What party? Why didn’t I know of it before?" Helena asked him.

"I just got the news as well. Do you remember Leon? It’s his birthday today."

"Leon?" Helena had a look of disgust when she heard the name. "Why are we going to that creep’s birthday?"

Vernon chuckled. Everyone knew that Leon had a great crush on Helena, and he chased after her for so many years, despite knowing that she was engaged to Vernon.

"Well, we are not exactly going for his sake."

"Then?"

"I got news that the commissioner is going to attend his birthday party. Since we want to meet him, I thought that it would be better to use this chance. What do you think?" Vernon still asked for her opinion.

Helena pursed her lips and frowned, deep in thought.

She doesn’t want to be in the presence of Leon at all. Who knows what rumors he would spread about her if she went to celebrate his birthday?

But it isn’t exactly easy to meet the commissioner either. One had to make an appointment a few days before for a meeting. She still doesn’t know what he knows about her mother’s matter. So, she had to deal with this very carefully.

Vernon’s plan was good, indeed.

She took a deep breath. "Fine. For my mother’s sake. I will endure that creep."

Vernon laughed out loud. "Don’t worry. You are now married. I don’t think he will still follow you like he did in the past."

Helena clicked her tongue in disgust. She couldn’t help that feeling whenever she thought about Leon. "He better stay far away from me."

Vernon nodded with confidence.

He was really confident. It was because in his past life, once they were married, Leon had announced that he was in a relationship. He said that he had moved on since the love of his life was already married and he had no chance anymore.

Helena did not know about this. She was still wary.

"I don’t understand. Why would the commissioner attend his birthday? Doesn’t he have anything better to do?" Helena asked.

Vernon chuckled, seeing her expression before replying, "I heard that he is a good friend with Leon’s father."

Helena nodded. She understood.

They went back home and started getting ready for the party.

Even though it was just a birthday party for a youngster, it was anything but simple.

It was a banquet with many important guests in attendance.

The presence of the police commissioner is an example to show how huge the magnitude of this party would be.

So they have to get dressed to nines for the party no matter how much she dislikes the birthday boy.

"Do you know? I heard that Helena is attending Leon’s birthday this year."

"What? Are you serious? She had never attended Leon’s birthday in so many years. Why is she coming today? Is it because she is not happy in her marriage with Vernon and wants to get together with Leon?"

"I don’t know. Leon heard that Helena was coming, and he spread the word to all his friend groups enthusiastically. I think there is going to be great drama at today’s party. I can’t wait anymore. I wonder when Helena will arrive. Isn’t she here yet?"

As two women were talking to each other, another woman came and intervened by scoffing, "What do you expect from an attention seeker? That woman got married to Vernon, and yet she wasn’t satisfied. Unless all the men in the city follow behind her like puppies, she would never stop seducing men. A peacock is more humble than that woman."
