Awakening of the Scheming Wife
Chapter 41: Secret? What if?

Chapter 41: Secret? What if?

"Hmph! Those are the excuses the weak ones give." Helena ruthlessly insulted him.

"You!!" He pointed his finger at her in anger. "You should stop watching romantic movies and reading novels. Those all are fake in the first place. They are corrupting your mind."

"Fake? Didn’t you see the man in the movie we watched last time break the glass of a car with his hand? That is bulletproof glass, you know? Still, he did that. How can you not even break this little box?" Helena pouted.

"Are you an idiot? That is a bulletproof glass? They just show us that that’s a bulletproof glass. In reality, it is made of sugar. It would break with just a touch. Not just me, but even a little kid can break that glass. How can you compare that fake male lead to me, a real man?" Vernon felt frustrated.

Hasn’t she always been too smart? Why did she become so dumb all of a sudden?

[Aww! So cute. He finally started to talk freely with me just like before. Let him think I am dumb and an idiot. Who cares? As long as he returns to normal.]

"..." (So that was all a plan? I fell into a trap just like that?)

"I am not an idiot. I am just saying that you are too weak. You start massaging your hands after holding me for a couple of seconds. What are you if not weak?" Despite her contradictory thoughts, she was arguing with him on the surface.

Vernon sighed. He couldn’t catch up with her multiple thoughts at the same time. He just lowered his head and said, "I am sorry for being too weak."

He just wanted to get this over with. His head started to ache.

Helena blinked her eyes. [He gave up just like that? What exactly is going on with him? The previous Vernon would argue with me for however long he could. But why is this new Vernon giving up so fast? I am worried. What should I do?]

Vernon looked at her. He felt bad for worrying her. But he wanted to say that he knew he was simple-minded. There is no way he could catch up with two different mindsets she was portraying in front of him at the same time.

He just said, "Instead of arguing, it is more important to deal with this box, don’t you think?"

Helena nodded absentmindedly.

"Let’s try searching for a key," Vernon said.

"I looked around already, and I didn’t find anything like a key here," Helena said.

"Then it might not be in this room. It could be somewhere else in this house. Where do you think mother could have placed her keys? Think carefully," Vernon asked her.

Helena thought for a second, "I don’t know. My parents’ bedroom? But then again, if she wanted to keep it a secret from my dad, she wouldn’t keep it directly in front of his eyes either, right?"

Vernon nodded for a second. Then he suddenly asked, "What if it isn’t exactly a secret from your father?"

"Huh? What do you mean?" Helena blinked her eyes.

"Just what I said. What if what was inside this box isn’t a secret from your father? Wouldn’t that simplify things? What if we are complicating everything for no reason at all?" Vernon asked.

Helena thought about his words carefully. "You are right, indeed. But what if that wasn’t the case? What if she doesn’t want to tell something to my father and I expose it just because I want to ’simplify’ things?"

She did not mock him but asked him back calmly as a serious discussion.

Vernon looked at her for a few seconds without saying anything.

"Why are you looking at me like that?" Helena touched her face while asking, as she wondered if there was something on her face.

Vernon seriously asked her, "Will you hide things from me in the future as well? I mean, I understand if you hide some things right now because we have yet to understand each other completely and maybe relax entirely with each other. But your parents have been married for around twenty-five years, right? Will you hide things from me twenty-plus years from now?"

Helena looked at him and blinked her eyes, "Huh?"

"Answer me," Vernon was serious with this question. He really wanted to know why she would hide so many things from him.

Until the end moment, he never found that she had been obtaining Jeffery’s shares behind his back. Whatever the reason was, he couldn’t understand why she wouldn’t share it with him.

He always thought that as wife and husband, they would go through thick and thin together, without any secrets from each other.

Helena froze. She wasn’t guilty of anything, but she felt her breath hitch for a second.

She felt that Vernon was a bit too serious when he asked that question. It was unlike the carefree Vernon she was used to.

She thought about his question carefully, and Vernon did not hurry her. He wanted her to think carefully before giving him the answer because it was very important to him.

His lifespan of around ten years’ truth lied in her answer.

Helena looked into his dark eyes which were as serious as they could ever get and slowly answered, "I don’t know."

"What?" Vernon did not expect this answer, "What do you mean you don’t know? How could you not know?"

Helena shrugged her shoulders, "I really don’t know. How could I guess what would happen twenty years later? Even if you ask me what will happen tomorrow, I might not give you an absolute answer. No one can predict the future, after all."

Vernon frowned. Her words sounded reasonable, but he wasn’t satisfied. He wanted an answer for the betrayal in his previous life. Sadly, he couldn’t ask her directly.

"No. I want to know. Under what circumstances would you share everything with me and would keep everything away from me?"
