Awakening of the Scheming Wife -
Chapter 18: Understand? No!
Chapter 18: Understand? No!
Tristan looked blankly at Helena’s serious expression. He was scared.
He forgot everything about his friendship with Vernon and that he was eavesdropping on their conversation and blurted out, "It was Vernon’s plan. I didn’t do anything. He told me to call that woman and I did. That’s all. Helena, please spare me, okay? I had no personal vendetta against you behind my actions. I was just being a good friend. That’s all. Really. Please believe me."
From his words, one could understand how scared he was of Helena.
Helena frowned. She did not say anything for a while. Tristan gulped on his saliva as he blinked his eyes innocently at her, trying his best to prove that he was innocent in this matter.
After a long while of silence, Helena suddenly blurted out, "You are lying."
"Huh?" Tristan felt like he was using this expression a lot today. But sadly, he had no choice. "I am not lying. Why would I lie?"
"Why would Vernon do such a thing for no reason? He was good the day before. He would never do something to disrespect me or both our families in front of the world. He may look like a careless and carefree second-generation rich heir, but I know that he is more than that. So, don’t try to instigate me against him and tell me why you did that," Helena said.
Tristan felt defeated when he heard her words. He had done nothing wrong and yet he was being accused of things because of his ’good’ friend.
He folded his hands and pleaded to Helena, "Helena. I am telling the truth. I don’t know anything. Everything was planned by Vernon and not me."
Helena looked at his expression for a while. She crossed her arms and leaned back in her chair as she asked, "Even if he did something, it should be instigated by someone. That someone should be very close to him. I know that he was close to just you and Theo and no one else. There is no way the cold-faced Theo would use his ’precious’ time to instigate Vernon against me. So that leaves with just you. Now tell me. Why did you instigate Vernon against me?"
"..." Tristan blinked his eyes. When she started her words, he felt that she finally believed him and that the plan was made by Vernon and not him. But by the end of the speech, this pot once against fell on his head? Why? And, how?
What wrong had he done in his previous life to have these people in his life?
Helena knew their little circle too well. She even described Theo’s personality well to make her deductions.
Even Tristan himself felt that her deductions were right and logical. If the matter did not fall on his head, he, too, would think that what she said was right.
He felt defeated once again, "Helena. Miss Ford. Young Missus Jeffery. Please spare me, will you? If you have any doubts about Vernon’s actions, why don’t you go and ask him directly? I really can’t stay between you husband and wife anymore. Please don’t throw these accusations at me, alright?"
His expression was filled with agony as he sadly pleaded with Helena.
Helena badly wanted to laugh at him but the situation did not seem suitable for her to do that.
"So, you really weren’t involved?" She asked to confirm once again.
"I really really really wasn’t involved. As I said, I just followed Vernon’s instructions." He finally saw some light at the end of the tunnel when he saw that she was trusting him.
He smiled but saw that Helena’s expression wasn’t good.
There were a turmoil of emotions in her eyes that he couldn’t quite grasp.
He stopped smiling and looked at her with concern, "Helena, are you alright?"
"Huh? Yeah," Helena came out of her thoughts and nodded. But her pale face wasn’t hidden from him. She asked him, "Do you have any idea about why he did that?"
Tristan pursed his lips and shook his head, "He did not tell me anything. Even I felt that he suddenly changed yesterday. But no matter how much I asked him, he wouldn’t tell me."
Helena had a look of understanding as she nodded. "Thank you for telling me all this. Sorry for doubting you. I will leave now."
Tristan saw that her expression wasn’t right and her face was too pale. "Helena, wait."
Helena stopped and looked at him in confusion.
"You don’t look too well. At least something before you leave, alright?" Tristan treated Helena as his good friend as well. He couldn’t bear seeing her in such a state.
Helena smiled and shook her head. "I am not hungry. But thank you for your concern. Bye."
Tristan felt her back looked too lonely and felt bad for her.
She was really lonely at the moment. She had lost her mother in this week. She had a weird fall out with her father. At this moment, she felt like Vernon would be the only person by her side.
But when she understood that Vernon had planned everything to get rid of her from his life and even used such a humiliating way to do that, she understood that Vernon wasn’t on her side either.
She was really lonely with no one by her side.
Vernon, on the other hand, heard everything on the phone. He felt a pang of pain in his heart when he heard her faint voice.
When Tristan asked her if she was fine, he was already alarmed.
But when he heard her voice, he knew that she was lonely as well. He just... did not understand.
What did he not understand? He did not know either.
He just did not understand anything.
He wanted to get rid of Helena from his life so badly. But when he heard her faint and lonely voice, he couldn’t let her be just like that. He knew that she felt lonely because of his actions.
