Chapter 49: The Beginning of Something Great
"My name is Neo," he started with the introduction to make her trust him a little. "Could you tell me your name if you don’t mind?"
"I have no name..." she paused, "No, I don’t even have any memory."
"No memory? Did they do something to you other than injecting drugs?" he asked, feigning concern.
"Yes, they opened up my head and cut some parts of my brain," she responded, showing no hint of emotion despite the brutality of what had been done to her.
"That’s..." he said softly, his voice tinged with anger.
"Those bastards really don’t have any morals! I’m glad I made them suffer first before killing them."
She shrugged; her expression blank. "Should I thank you then?"
Neo was stunned by her words and was unable to reply right away.
"I have nothing to offer but my body. So, you can do what you want with it. I can just heal after." She raised her two hands, offering herself.
He sighed deeply, shaking his head. "That’s not why I’m here. I’m not going to use you like that."
She lowered her hands slowly, her expression still blank "Then what do you want?"
Neo took a deep breath, trying to steady himself. "I want to stop this madness. What they’ve done to you... it’s not right. Help me destroy the one responsible for this island so they won’t be able to victimize other people."
She stared at him for a long moment. "So, you’re a hero of justice then?"
"Where did you learn that word? I thought you lost your memory?"
She shook her head. "Not all of them. I remembered it faintly... Hero of justice. Someone who is willing to sacrifice himself for others... is that you?"
Neo hesitated, his eyes locking with hers.
"I don’t know about being a hero. I’m just someone who wants to make those responsible for this place dead. But if it means doing whatever it takes to stop this—then yeah, maybe that’s what it takes."
She studied him for a moment, as if trying to weigh his words. Finally, she spoke. "And if it costs you everything?"
"Then I’ll pay the price," he said, his voice steady. "As long as it ends here."
"I see," she nodded and closed her eyes.
"Very well, I’ll help you. But I’m not doing it for revenge or anything. I’m doing it because I owe you."
Neo’s expression softened, but he didn’t speak right away.
"That’s fine. So how about you get some clothes? I do enjoy the fan service, but it’d be better if I don’t have too many distractions."
She glanced at him, noticing his eyes briefly linger on her bare chest.
She didn’t seem to mind, but if her benevolent "benefactors" wanted her to wear clothes, she would oblige.
She looked around and grabbed the white lab coats from the corpses.
Fortunately, Neo had slit their throats, so the blood had pooled on the floor and didn’t stain the clothing.
Neo watched her, feeling a mix of unease and admiration. Despite everything she had been through, she was still calm and cool headed.
’But I still need to be careful....’
She could snap and lose control at any moment, based on the data he read.
When she was done, she tied her hair into a neat bun.
Now, she looked more stunning than ever—her cold, almost demeanor softening just slightly under the effect of a simple girlish act.
Neo found himself momentarily distracted but quickly refocused.
"Why are you looking at me? Is there something wrong with my face?" she asked.
Neo quickly snapped out of his thoughts, realizing he had been staring for too long.
"No," he replied, shaking his head. "Just... thinking."
She raised an eyebrow, "About what?"
"It’s nothing important. Let’s get out of this place first, and by don’t ever talk when where in the surface without my permission,"
"Understood."
Without another glance, he turned away, but she grabbed his shirt.
"Please name me."
"Are you sure?" He raised an eyebrow, finding it weird.
She nodded, "Yes, I’m very sure."
Neo paused, sensing her desire for a name. He thought for a moment before speaking softly, "How about Lyra?"
She stayed silent for a good three seconds. Then, with a subtle smile, she replied, "Lyra... yeah... I like that name."
’She’s really pretty,’ he almost blurted it out.
Her beauty was on a different level, especially when she smiled.
She noticed him staring too much and, without missing a beat, quickly returned to her usual poker face.
Neo snapped back to reality, feeling a slight heat rise to his cheeks.
"I—uh, didn’t mean to..." he trailed off, unsure how to recover.
Lyra didn’t respond, but there was a faint glint in her eyes, almost like she was happy.
When he turned around, she felt her heart race, and a faint warmth spread across her cheek.
It was the first time she had ever felt such a strong emotion.
In her eyes, Neo acted gently, his words softspoken and kind.
There was something about him that made her unconsciously find him harmless.
She quickly wiped away the unexpected warmth from her face, slipping back into her usual demeanor.
But deep down, she was slowly drawn to him, like a moth to a flame.
Meanwhile, a grin spread on Neo’s face because everything was falling into place.
All of his actions had been carefully calculated.
He had studied Lyra’s personality, analyzing every subtle shift in her behavior, and had adjusted his own accordingly to get the best response.
Neo understood how to make her feel comfortable without pushing her too far, how to tap into her sense of curiosity and need for purpose after losing her memory.
Though he genuinely found her very attractive, that didn’t mean he had fallen for her. His blatant display of interest was all part of the bigger picture.
’Now, all I need to do is find a way to maximize her usefulness for me,’
