Avery's Game Of Revenge -
Chapter 74: Something Interesting.
Chapter 74: Something Interesting.
Avery could not understand why he would want to treat her with respect, except he hadn’t heard what she told him her name was. But as he led her through the lobby and into the presidential elevator, she stopped asking.
After all, her questions only made the receptionist who had now introduced himself as Mack, continue to apologize to her for not respecting her earlier.
’Maybe he’s planning to leave here and come to work in our company. A form of sucking up? Or he’s just trying to get in my favor for a reason,’ she mused.
The elevator doors slid open when they got to the top floor and Avery stepped out, leaving Mack behind.
"Thanks for bringing me up," she said with a small smile.
"Not at all, Miss McCallum. I was only doing my job," Mack replied with a bow. Before the elevator could slide close, he hurriedly added, "But, Miss, if you could you please not mention what happened at the desk to the chairman? I really am sorry for interrogating you when I should have asked your name first."
"I won’t. Like you said, you were only doing your job," Avery agreed. She had much more important matters to discuss with his boss than to discuss how she had been almost humiliated at the receptionist desk of his workplace. If anything, Archie would only see it as something to laugh about and mock her.
She walked through the quiet hallway leading to his office, wincing at the slight pain in her ankle where the straps of her shoes tightened around. This was also his fault! If he didn’t tell Mia about her relationship with Brian, she wouldn’t have had a reason to come here at all thereby walking the extra miles that caused the pain.
An assistant was waiting for her when she got to the secretaries office,
"Welcome, Miss. I will lead you to the—"
"No, you don’t have to bother with it. I can find my way," Avery replied, simply granting her a nod of acknowledgement and walking past her. She knew where Archie’s office was and didn’t need anyone to escort her there.
Having a third party present would only make their meeting seem formal.
And a formal meeting between she, an ordinary McCallum, and Archie, a Donovan wouldn’t end up good for her. Her ball of confidence would be deflated and he would have the upper hand.
Surprisingly, after she turned down the first assistant, none of the others stopped her as she walked past their cubicles to arrive at the door of Archie’s office. She stopped dead in her tracks, her eyes clouding with confusion as she looked around.
Suspicious.
Why wasn’t anyone saying anything? Even the secretary that sat right outside his door only spared her a quick glance and small smile before returning to what she was doing. They weren’t planning to murder her here, right?
With the thought that nothing was impossible for Archie to do, she took out her phone and texted her brother.
"At your best friend’s office. If you don’t hear from me in five minutes, know that he murdered me!" the message read.
She waited until the text marked read before pushing the door open to step into the office. Her eyes took in the elegant interior design of the office, from the plush, black colored leather sofas that were arranged around a gleaming glass table to the large desk placed at one end of the office and the swivel chair right in front of the floor to ceiling window.
Archie was sitting in the chair, his head bent over the cluster of files on the desk before him. He looked completely innocent...like a man who would never think of snitching on his best friend sister. But then, looks were said to be deceiving.
Considering Archibald’s Donovan level of ethereal handsomeness, he could be said to be the most deceptive man in the world. But who could blame anyone who believed him? With that face, and nose, and lips, and—
"Close the door behind you, Ava."
His voice snapping her out of her thoughts, Avery blinked and quickly reminded herself of the reason she was here. She mustered enough anger as she could and projected it in her voice to ask, "How did you know I’m the one?"
"I felt you first and whiffed you next," he replied without lifting his face from the files.
Avery scoffed. Wasn’t that a grand way of telling her she had an odor? He smelled her?!
"Typical behavior of dogs like you, isn’t it?" she asked, her voice laced with sarcasm.
Instead of replying to her provocative question, Archie changed the topic, "Will you stand by the door forever?"
"No! I stayed here only because I thought you were busy."
"Then would you leave if I am?"
"Why would I?" Avery snapped. "You put me in trouble today and indirectly made me lose the precious time I should have dedicated to my work. Don’t you think I should return the favor?"
Still without looking up, Archie replied, "If you think you can do that by standing in front of the door the whole time, then I’m in for a show. You have my attention."
Avery rolled her eyes, the brown orbs in them sparkling in annoyance as she walked forward to stop just a few steps away from his desk.
"Why did you do it?" she questioned.
"Do what?"
"Don’t act oblivious! It’s fucking annoying!" Avery slammed her hands on the desk, the loud sound acting as a sharp punctuation to her words. She cast a hard stare down at his dark hair and hissed, "Will you fucking look up and meet my eyes when I speak?!"
To Avery’s greatest shock, he looked up and met her gaze. But... was the fucker actually smirking right now?
"Wanna hear something interesting?"
The manner with which those perfect lips moved annoyed Avery to no end.
"The only interesting words I want to hear right now is your apology and nothing else apart from that," she replied, anger reflecting in her voice.
"I don’t apologize unless it’ll reverse whatever I did to offend you. Will it?" He replied himself before she could speak, "No. Now, wanna hear something interesting?"
