Chapter 71: Relationship Exposed.

Music Rec: Lost Control by Alan Walker ft Sorana

It wasn’t Assistant Riley’s fault though.

The chairman of the McCAllum group could not bear to scold his own grandchildren himself, thereby prompting him to request the help of his assistant who was more than eager to take on the job.

Avery had been introduced to the older woman from the moment she was old enough to enroll in a kindergarten class, and since then, there had never been a moment of rest for her.

It was the same for Arthur and Emma, but they had set themselves free when both of them got successful in their respective careers. Since Avery resumed in the McCAllum group as a junior employee immediately she was done with high school and had to work beneath the chairman’s assistant, she hadn’t been able to free herself completely from Assistant Riley.

Every single mistake or oversight on her part was rewarded with a public disgrace event such as this. Avery could only be thankful she didn’t have an office crush to keep a good image before; or Assistant Riley would have jeopardized her chances.

’I just have to continue telling her I’m sorry,’ she decided inwardly. ’When she’s satisfied, she will quit.’

Mia continued, her voice laced with an equal amount of fury and superiority, "Miss McCallum, I don’t want to think you allowed your recent promotion get into your head. But I also can’t think of any other explanation there could be for this action of yours!"

Avery didn’t raise her head up.

"I’m sorry, Ma’am," she only repeated.

"Except..." Mia began, and that prompted Avery to look up.

For some reason, she knew the next words her grandfather’s assistant wanted to say wouldn’t go down well with her. And she was right. The smug smile on Mia’s face confirmed it.

"The only explanation for this mistake, Miss McCAllum, is that you want you are after the endgame," Mia said.

"What endgame?" Avery asked, confusion marring her face while hoping against hope that the older woman wouldn’t say anymore insulting words to rile her up.

"Losing this deal on behalf of our company."

The frown on Avery’s face deepened.

"Why would I want to lose this deal? It would have guaranteed another promotion for me and except I am stupid, which I’m not, I wouldn’t intentionally let go of such a deal," she stated.

"Of course." Mia nodded, lifting her chin in confidence as she added, "But not when the deal will benefit you personally in another way?"

"What are you saying, Ma—"

Mia interjected, "We lost the deal to The Walker Group, our rivals. How did you think I felt when I heard that you, a trusted employee on our side, and the heir to that company are entangled in a romantic relationship?"

Her question cast a wave of murmurs over the whole floor, the other employees plunging into smaller chatter groups to discuss the shocking news they just heard. They had been working their asses off to make their company emerge at the top while regarding people from the rival group as enemies. Yet the heiress to their own group was planning on getting married to the opposition’s heir?

While the employees were expressing their shock and astonishment in the loudest way possible, Avery was stuck in a world of her own, staring at Assistant Riley with shock in her eyes. How did the woman get to know about her relationship with Brian?

Years ago when Avery had just begun dating Brian, her grandfather—hoping that she would soon outgrow the ’childish infatuation’ that possessed her— had ordered the family to keep the news of her relationship under wraps. After all, he had never considered accepting a member of their rival family as grandson-in-law.

Not now, not ever.

Avery and Brian had decided to think of how to handle her grandfather’s view of their relationship later on, but had agreed to keep it under wraps but now... Assistant Riley suddenly knew about it. And she was utilizing that information in the most dangerous way possible.

What was trouble if not this?

"Won’t you even attempt to defend yourself, Miss McCAllum? You have been standing there for a whole minute without speaking a word," Mia said, her voice breaking into Avery’s thought.

The latter opened her mouth, but no words came out. So she tried again, "I won’t ask how you got to know about this, Mrs Riley. I only want to know why you consider me untrustworthy, to the extent of letting go of an important deal because I want my boyfriend’s company to have it."

"Are you questioning me now?!" Mia asked in disbelief, pulling out her trump card to remind Avery of her inferiority. To remind her that she might be the heiress and CEO–in–training of the company, but she still had to answer to the chairman’s assistant whether she liked it or not.

Avery sensed the underlying message, a grim smile crossing her face.

"I am sorry for the mistake I made which cost us the loss of an important deal. And I will accept any punishment you decide on," she said in a resigned tone. "I promise it won’t happen again."

Mia seemed to regard her for a few minutes more before speaking, "I will confer with the supervisors and get back to you. Out of the affection I have for you, I will advise that you get ready for a transfer to one of the newly planted branch so the announcement won’t come as a shock."

Her lips set in a thin line of displeasure, Avery didn’t reply her. Truly, she was remorseful for the mistake she made and already prepared herself for the punishment, but Mia always had her way of presenting things to make them seem worser than they really were. And now, she was the bad egg and spoilt heiress from the point of view of the other employees.

Mia waved her off and she turned to leave, but was about to get to her cubicle when the older woman’s voice stopped her again,

"And Miss McCAllum, I will need your help with something."

Sucking in a deep breath to calm herself down, Avery turned and walked back to Mia.

"I’m listening," she said through gritted teeth.
