Chapter 50: Dating History.

"You really are wonderful, Arthur, aren’t you?" he seethed. "Protecting your sister even though you are barely conscious enough to protect your own self, what if I just take off that oxygen mask?"

As if he was really contemplating on whether or not he wanted to remove the oxygen mask, Archie’s eyes were glued on Arthur’s face for the next few seconds until he finally averted them.

"I will presume you are only jealous of the attention I’m giving my new wife so for tonight, I’ll give myself up to keep you company," he promised, shaking his head slightly in fake pity. "Will take a cold shower and be back...Even though your ugly face works well in driving off sexual urges."

Avery found herself out of bed barely four hours into the next day after battling with nightmares through the period when her eyes were closed. Draping a black coat around herself, she headed down to the living room with her phone and plush pillow in hand. She made herself comfortable in the swing chair, in a position where she was able to overlook the midnight scenery of the capital city.

However, the beautiful scenery did nothing to calm the sea of thoughts that were raging through her mind. And the fact that those thoughts centered around her conversation with Jodi last night was not helping things.

"Don’t be so stupid, Avery. You didn’t come here to do this" she said out loud, thinking there was no one in the house that could hear her. Archie couldn’t be back yet and the dogs were in... Where were they? She was unable to remember him showing her anywhere that looked like a dog room so she made a mental note to ask him later. She could use their company—if they were awake— on days like this.

Before she knew it, she had forgotten the dogs and fallen back into the never ending cycle of thoughts that had been torturing her for hours now. Who was the woman he went to? Was it just a fling or a friends with benefits she was supposed to respect?

Convincing herself that this was only for her protection, she took her phone and typed out the keywords, ’Archibald Donovan, women’, on the internet. She had to know those who were his women so she could avoid them and at the same time, keep on Archie’s good side. The results were instantly displayed on the phone screen and jeez! There were a lot.

Social media influencers who claimed to be dating him one night and the very next morning, would post an apology and say it was fake news; female CEOs and heiresses who mentioned him in a suggestive manner and dropped subtle hints they were dating him on show interviews; there was even a doctor who claimed she was pregnant for him and after a while, revealed it was a lie. However, one thing Avery and every one else in the country could deduce from the posts and claims was that Archibald Donovan never came out to openly refute the claims. The next was that even though he might not have dated any of those women, he definitely slept with them.

"I hated him for a valid reason then," Avery murmured, eyeing the phone as if it was Archie in her hand. She could remember how her co-workers and acquaintances had always gushed and ululated in excitement whenever his name came up during their parties and outings, and how it had always angered her then.

Resting her elbow on the plush pillow, she decided to take notes of which of the dating posts had no apology post after it. Maybe the real girlfriend was actually among them but was well hidden. However, she was not able to go ahead with her search as her eyes caught something peculiar at the bottom of each posts.

The dates.

Each of them were posted earlier than three years ago and when she tried sorting the posts by date, there was none from the past three years to the present day. There was only one explanation for that but she was finding it hard to believe.

Archie stopped his sexcapades after getting married? That had to be a big joke.

The mere thought of it made Avery want to burst out in laughter but when she thought of Brian, she was able to stop herself. Archie and Brian were two different people.

And even though she used to hate Archie and still kind of disliked him now, she could not picture him as a man would cheat on his partner.

She sighed, "Just give up on this, Avery." Switching off her phone, she directed her attention back to the wonderful view of the city but had not watched for more than a minute when she heard the elevator ding.

’Archie?’ was the first name that sprang to her mind and at the same time, she shot to her feet and rushed to the foyer where he was already standing, taking off his shoes.

"You are back..." she started to say, when he interjected.

"Good thing you are awake. Saves me the trouble of doing it myself.

Blinking in confusion, Avery subconsciously tightened the coat around herself before speaking,

"You are late."

"I am not," he disagreed, closing the distance between them in the twinkling of an eye. Gripping her shoulders tightly as if the little to no distance between them was not enough, he asked, "That aside, why were you in that room last night?"

"What room?" Avery questioned.

"The Shermans’ private room at RNW. Dressed in that manner and unaccompanied by me, what were you doing there?"

"That...I sent you a text about it, didn’t I?"

He nodded, "And I saw it. If you didn’t contact me in 15 minutes to that time, I am to know there’s something wrong. What were you expecting to go wrong?"

"Nothing really," Avery replied. "Alice mentioned her brother and his friends would be present so—"

"You knew there would be men present but you still dared to dress that way?!"
