Avery's Game Of Revenge -
Chapter 47: Three Years Of Boredom
Chapter 47: Three Years Of Boredom
’Archie...,’ the voice resounded in his mind. His eyes travelled along the short line of girls and when he got to the last one, he knew he wouldn’t be able to hold up on his promise of spending the next five hours here.
What the hell was she wearing?!
Of course, he recognized it. After all, he had singlehandedly picked out every single dress that now lied in her closet. Three years of boredom had given him more than enough time to do that. She wore a stunning, midnight-blue dress that seemed painted on her curves, showcasing her toned physique with daring allure. The fitted bodice accentuated her slender waist and emphasized her luscious cleavage, while the plunging neckline and low back left little to the imagination. The high hemline and side slit offered tantalizing glimpses of her toned legs, making it impossible for him to look away. As Archie’s eyes zeroed in on her red face and lips that were parted in surprise, everyone else present in the room were reduced to mere background statues.
Adjusting his glasses, he gently closed the book in his hand and rose to his feet. The effects of the aphrodisiac was starting to set in and as much as he tried to fight it, Avery’s presence reduced all his efforts to null.
"I am leaving," he announced, and to the delight of Benedict and his friends, walked out the door without so much as a single glance back. He was followed closely by Neil and this action from both chairman and assistant, caused questions to rouse in every single one of the girls’ mind.
Avery in particular, was finding it hard to hide her confusion so she turned to Jodi and raised her brows in question. Apart from his first and rather long stare at her when she whispered his name, he had kept his eyes completely off her even when he bypassed her to walk out of the room. In short, both he and Neil behaved like they had no idea who she was.
"Jodi, I have a bad feeling about this. You think we should leave?" she whispered, when she was sure the others were too absorbed in exchanging pleasantries and compliments to hear her.
"I don’t think so, Ava. I ’know’ we should leave," Jodi replied. Raking her long fingers through her blonde hair, she sighed, "We should tell Alice we will get our drinks ourselves. If we catch up with the men outside and can explain ourselves to them, then we return but if we don’t..." she trailed off, the dread in her eyes completing her words.
Avery squeezed her hand to reassure her and pulled away immediately. Alice was now on the other side of the room, talking to one of the men so she found her way there.
"Hey, Jodi’s picking up the drinks herself. I will join her," she lied, forcing an awkward smile on her face.
The unsuspecting Alice returned the smile and nodded, "Will be waiting for you."
With that, Avery found her way out of the room with Jodi sticking closely by her. As they made their way through the dimly lit corridors, the pulsating music and laughter of the nightclub growing fainter was replaced by the hum of neon signs and the distant thrum of the city outside. The air was heavy with the scent of smoke and sweat, and the cool night air beckoned like a refreshing oasis. She emerged into the bright lights of the club’s entrance, where a sea of people milled about, some laughing and chatting, others waiting in line for taxis or rideshares. The flashing lights of the club’s sign cast a colorful glow over the front building, illuminating the sleek cars and limousines that lined the curb.
"You think they left through the private entrance or the public entrance?" Jodi asked, her eyes frantically searching the area for any sign of the two men. They should not have gone that far, right?
"I think whichever they left through should be leading to the penthouse. Or rather, the garage. Should we start our search from there?"
Jodi nodded, "The garage it is. If he was really angry, I believe Neil should be getting ready to leave for home."
It didn’t take long to get to the garage through the private entrance they had used earlier with Alice and the other girls, and just as Jodi predicted, Neil was starting to get in his car.
"Why isn’t he getting in the driver’s seat?" she muttered beneath her breath, a frown pulling up on her brows. She watched as a man, one whom she recognized as one of the building’s security guards get into the driver seat, and her frown deepened.
Neil would never let anyone drive him; and moreso, not after what happened between them the last time she drove him. As he always said, it was a kind of stupid punishment he was inflicting on himself to payback for what happened that day.
She turned to Avery, "If Neil’s in the car, then I think Mr Donovan should be on his way to the penthouse already. Will you need me to accompany you?"
"Of course not!" Avery retorted, "We don’t know why they got angry but you noticed how the room’s atmosphere seemed tense when we got in, right? Go settle with your man on your own." She chuckled, sending a mischievous wink as she walked away.
Left alone, Jodi wasted no time in hurrying to Neil’s car that was just starting to move.
"Neil!" she called out loud to draw the attention of both the driver and the passenger, and she was successful.
The car stopped for her and she pulled the back door open, prepared to get in when Neil stopped her.
"You should use another car, Jo. I will make a call and you just ha–have to wait a few minutes..."
"Why should I wait when we could share the ride?" Jodi questioned. From what she could see, there was space enough in the car for three more people as long as they had the same physique as her.
"Just leave when I tell you to, Jo please!"
