Avery's Game Of Revenge
Chapter 42: In the Professor’s Seat.

Chapter 42: In the Professor’s Seat.

It was the reason Avery found this public introduction a little bit... dangerous.

She did want attention, but not this early. However, it did not look like she could avoid it now. She walked down the aisle, trying as hard as she could to ignore the gazes following her from all corners of the hall. Not wanting to mount the professor’s podium, she stopped when she got to the front.

"Won’t you come down here?" she whispered, with a voice loud enough for Orion to hear.

He ignored her instruction and instead ordered, "Come up here."

"I don’t want to. You’ll only make me attract unnecessary attention," Avery refused. She pointed her thumb over her shoulders and added, "Look at that?"

"Then would you prefer to stand somewhere at the back instead? Mind you, you won’t hear or see a single thing I say or do. It would be better to just go home."

"Am I to sit on the podium then?" she retorted.

Orion shook his head, a small smile starting to form on his face.

"You are to sit on that," he said, turning his head away from her. Avery followed his line of sight to see he was looking at the seat meant for the professor.

She sighed, frustrated.

"Orion, the professor will need his—"

"I am the professor," he cut her off. "And thanks for you concern but I prefer teaching on my feet."

Avery could see he was struggling to hold back his laughter, making her wonder what exactly was funny here. If she could read Orion’s mind, she’d have seen it was the exact expression on her face that was tempting him to burst out in loud laughter.

"The professor... How are you the professor?" she tilted her head in question, letting her guard down a bit.

"Standing in for a friend." He elaborated, "Not the one I stood in for yesterday but another one. They are always so busy."

"Of course," Avery nodded slowly. "I get why Archie introduced you as ’just Orion’. It’s because you have no particular job apart from standing in for friends, isn’t it?"

Orion shrugged nonchalantly, the smile on his face refusing to falter.

"Maybe, I’m not sure of that. But what I am sure of is that the other students are waiting for me to start teaching now. You taking the seat or not?" he asked.

Avery hesitated. She cast a quick glance at the back of the class where a lot of students were still loitering around, searching for empty seats, and wondered why so many students were suddenly taking this lesson. There were not this many students yesterday.

Orion’s voice broke into her thoughts, "I’m not forcing you to take the seat. If you refuse, I can call any of those pretty girls at the back and they’d take the seat without question."

"I will take it," Avery muttered. She walked up the short flight of steps that lead up the stage, and ignoring the wave of murmurs that seemed to echo behind her, she went to sit on the chair meant for the professor.

"You settled?" Orion called out and she nodded in reply.

While she bent her head to take out her books, she didn’t notice how Orion’s eyes lingered on her before he turned to face the crowd.

The class began in the best way possible and Avery could not help but conclude—in her mind—that Orion was a really good teacher. He did get all of the students to pay attention with his occasional jokes and teases, making almost all the female students swoon by the time the class was halfway done.

"Valentina Ross being a very good example—"

The shrill sound of Avery’s phone ringing broke the harmony in the class, once more directing all attention to her, including Orion’s. His brows were raised in question when he stared at her and for a moment there, she saw a hint of seriousness in his eyes. He looked like a real professor there, not just someone she had been joking with a few hours ago.

"I’m sorry..." she murmured, her sincerity expressed vividly in her eyes. She turned to the students and reiterated her apology as she fiddled through her bag to retrieve the phone.

"Fuck! Did I forget to put this on silent?" she cursed beneath her breath when her hand touched the phone. It was a call from an unknown number.

"Pick it up. Might be urgent," Orion approved, before turning to resume teaching the class.

"Aver— Ava Donovan speaking," she whispered into the phone as soon as the call connected.

"Broken Hearts Casting manager Leroy Hames speaking," a masculine voice came from the other side of the phone.

Broken Hearts... It was the first time Avery was getting a call like this so it didn’t take long for her to realize Broken Hearts was the movie she and Jodi attended an audition for the previous day. She had left without auditioning so why was she being called?

"We found out through the information you left that you do not have an agency at the moment, so we decided to contact you directly."

"Yeah," Avery confirmed. "I was actually there to audition for an extra role but I ended up leaving early so..."

"Actually, Miss Donovan, there’s this role my subordinates skipped yesterday and when we done assigning the roles to each candidate, you were the only one left who met the beauty standards of this particular character. If you would accept, the script would be sent to you as soon as possible and all further requirements would be communicated."

Avery’s eyes widened in surprise. Was it supposed to be this easy? She could very well remember how Emma used to stress on auditioning at the earliest days of her career.

"Miss Donovan?"

"Absolutely, Mr Hames!" she exclaimed. "I would uh... like to take this offer and will be waiting for the script."

"Very well then, Miss Donovan. I look forward to working with you."

When the call disconnected, Avery didn’t waste any time in packing her books up. Accepting that role meant she would be in close proximity with Valentina within a few weeks or days perhaps, and she needed to prepare.

’Valentina...’ she thought, conjuring an image of the girl who used to be her cousin, in her mind.
