Avery's Game Of Revenge
Chapter 41: Cunning Charlotte.

Chapter 41: Cunning Charlotte.

Avery had to tiptoe out of her room the next morning, still feeling mortified and avoiding Archie due to the mistake she made the previous night. Truthfully, she was not regretting what she said but the fact that she had no idea what Archie thought about her comment was what was bothering her. He had simply ushered her out of his room after what she said and till now, she had caught no glimpse of him.

Ding!

The elevator slid open and she stepped out, suddenly remembering that she had forgotten her card up in her room. Without the card, there was no way anyone could use the penthouse elevator that would lead them straight there, unless she was to use the normal elevator to the top floor and then use the stairs up to the penthouse. Even then, she would have to pray that someone who could open the door for her from the inside, would be home. If not...no idea.

In short, she had just procured a stressful journey for herself, all because of that tongue slip and her attempt to avoid Archie.

"Miss Ava?"

She quickened her steps to the waiting car, where the driver was calling her from and greeted, "Good morning..."

"Dylan," the man supplied, "Good morning, Miss. I told the boss about yesterday and he said If you won’t be heading back home immediately after classes, I am not to return home too."

"What would you be doing then?" Avery asked, her brows raised.

"I am to stay behind and chauffeur you and Miss Jodi to wherever you might want to go." Dylan closed the door after she she was safely inside the car, missing the sight of Avery rolling her eyes to what he said.

She waited until he was settled in the the driver seat and watched as he turned the key in the ignition, before asking, "When did he tell you all this?"

"A few minutes before you came out, Miss. If you want to meet him, there’s an eighty percent chance we could still overtake his car if we leave now," Dylan replied.

Avery waved her hand, signalling him not to worry about it. Why would she want to meet him when her rush to avoid him was what made her forget her elevator card? She leaned back into her seat and closed her eyes, preparing to enjoy the ride until they arrived at the University.

An hour later, she was standing by the fountain in the middle of the campus, leaning against the large rock Charlotte Ross had been sitting on the previous day. She had been waiting for her for the past two minutes and there was no sign of her approaching.

Strange.

The report she got on Charlotte Ross mainly consisted of her hobby and habits which were reading and punctuality, respectively. Her life was like a scheduled one that had been planned before hand while she only needed to live through it.

’Will she be absent today?’ Avery wondered, making one last search through the throng of students to see if she would see anyone with Charlotte’s physique. "Shit, I have to be done with her before Jodi arrives," she spoke out loud.

"Hey, you are here again?"

Spinning around to see the girl she had been looking for standing behind her, a bright smile bloomed on Avery’s face.

"Hey Charlotte! I was waiting for you. How are you doing?" she asked, excitement underlying her tone.

"I’m quite alright," Charlotte replied solemnly, unable to match Avery’s excitement. "I uh—I didn’t get your name yesterday. So I couldn’t check out your name in our high school compendium."

The wide smile on Avery’s face changed to a cunning one when she heard Charlotte’s last statement. The latter might be timid but the report never said she was stupid, instead it said she was extremely smart. Therefore, Avery had predicted that she would find ways to check if she really did attend high school with her.

She responded, "Ava Donovan. That’s my name but you won’t be able to find it in the high school compendium."

Charlotte’s eyes flickered with distrust which Avery was quick to dispell by saying, "I changed my name two years ago. But there’s a reunion in two weeks, isn’t there? Would you like to attend with me?"

"No. I don’t—I don’t really do well with reunions so I will pass on this one."

"I understand. I guess I’ll have to pass too then," Avery said. She cast a quick glance at her watch and her eyes dimmed, "Charlotte, I have to leave now. My class is starting in a minute."

She nodded and waved with one hand, retrieving her book with the other. It was the same book she had been reading the previous day right on this very rock.

"Oh, I still have about an hour left so I guess I’ll read with that time," she said.

With one last smile, Avery turned and headed to the lecture hall which was already teeming with students. There was no empty seat in sight and she was beginning to curse beneath her breath at how stupid she was for not retaining a seat first before going to wait for Charlotte.

"Will I have to stand now?" she asked, her question directed at no one in particular. She was starting to find her way to the back of the hall when she heard a loud, familiar voice yell from the front of the hall.

"Ava!"

The attention of everyone in the room, together with hers, was drawn by the call and they all directed their gazes to the front of the hall where... Orion?! What was he doing standing where the professor was supposed to be? As the hall had now grown quiet, his next call was no longer a yell.

"Did you find a seat, Ava?"

With his eyes fixed on her, Orion had now directed everyone’s attention to her. It was a class of freshmen so apart from those who knew themselves from the outside society—prolly through attending the same high school or having the same family status— no one had really gotten the opportunity to acquaint themselves with someone else from the same department.

It was the reason Avery found this public introduction a little bit... dangerous.
