Avery's Game Of Revenge -
Chapter 185: Marry me, Archie.
Chapter 185: Marry me, Archie.
There was a pause on the line before the doctor responded carefully. "Is she conscious? Able to communicate?"
"Barely. She’s speaking, but it’s just to demand relief."
"Any vomiting? Seizures?"
"No."
"Heart rate?"
Archie glanced back at Avery, her chest rising and falling rapidly. "Looks elevated."
The doctor exhaled. "Given the symptoms, she likely ingested a low-to-moderate dose of a sedative-hypnotic—possibly gamma-hydroxybutyrate or ketamine. The effects should wear off in a few hours, but..."He hesitated.
"But what?" Archie snapped.
"But in cases like this, the discomfort can be... extreme. The body reacts to the substance by demanding relief from the chemical overload. Some patients describe it as unbearable."
Archie’s grip on the phone turned white-knuckled. "What are our options?"
Another pause. "Hospitalization is safest. We can monitor vitals and administer IV fluids to help flush her system. But..."
"But what?"
"But if she’s resistant to medical intervention, and given the nature of the drug’s effects, sedation may not be advisable. It could exacerbate the chemical conflict in her system."
Archie’s teeth grinded together. "Meaning?"
The doctor cleared his throat. "Meaning in some cases... the body needs to work through the substance naturally. And if the patient is in distress, sometimes the most effective relief is..." A weighted silence. "Physical."
Archie went quiet, the sound of his breathing traveling through the line.
The doctor continued quickly. "I’m not suggesting anything unethical. But if she’s in a safe environment with someone she trusts, and if she’s lucid enough to consent—"
"She’s not," Archie cut in coldly.
"Then medical supervision is the only responsible option," the doctor said firmly. "Bring her in immediately. We’ll—"
A sharp gasp from the backseat cut him off. Archie turned just in time to see Avery clawing at her own skin, her face twisted in frustration.
"Mr. Donovan?"
At the doctor’s call, his voice dropped to a growl. "If I bring her in, what exactly will you do for her?" he asked.
"Monitor her. Keep her hydrated. Restrain her if necessary to prevent injury."
Archie’s entire being revolted at the thought of the woman behind him, writhing and desperate, strapped to a hospital bed while strangers watched her suffer.
"There’s no antidote?"he probed.
"No. Just time," the doctor replied.
Just then, Avery let out a broken sound, her fingers twisting in the seatbelt, pushing Archie to make a decision.
"Understood," he said flatly.
His hand hovering over the door handle, he was about to push it open and go to her when suddenly, Avery’s arms wrapped around him from behind with that terrifying strength again. Before he could react, she had climbed over the seat, straddling him, her legs on either side of his hips.
His breath caught as he looked into her face—her eyes burning with determination and raw, unfiltered need.
Just then, the doctor’s voice crackled through the phone again. "Uh... Mr. Donovan, what is your relationship with the patient? Given the severity of the situation you described, if she’s your partner, I’d strongly suggest you... assist her in finding relief before her condition worsens."
Archie’s grip on the phone tightened.
Without another word, he swiped to end the call.
"My partner?" he muttered to himself, a dry, humorless chuckle escaping him. "I wish."
He flung the phone off, letting it clatter onto the passenger seat at the same time Avery leaned forward to kiss his lips.
"Angel..."
She didn’t listen. She couldn’t. Her body was burning up, her fingers fumbling with his shirt buttons as she pressed against him.
The doctor’s words echoed in his head.
Sometimes the most effective relief is physical.
Archie closed his eyes, ready to give in to her when her soft, pained voice, reached into his ears.
"Marry me, Archie."
He froze, his breath catching in his throat. It wasn’t the proposal itself that shocked him, as his mind was yet to register those words; it was the fact that she had said his name. She knew who he was now? His eyes fluttered open, and he adjusted his broken glasses, studying her face intently. "What did you just say?"
She repeated it, slower this time, her voice unsteady but clear. "Will you help me if i ask you to marry me, Archie?"
His grip on her tightened slightly. "You remember who i am?"
She hesitated for a fraction of a second before nodding. "Yeah... why not?"
Archie exhaled sharply. "No, you don’t. I don’t believe you." He couldn’t. She had no idea who he was just few minutes ago, and now she suddenly remembered him? What had changed in the past few minutes?
"Your name is Archibald Donovan," Avery said, her fingers curling against his chest as she spoke, her words deliberate despite the lingering haze in her eyes. "You’re twenty-eight. Chairman of A Corp." She listed off his subsidiaries one by one, her voice gaining strength with each one.
Archie narrowed his eyes at her. "Tell me something else. Something personal. Something only we would know."
She swallowed, then met his gaze. "I am not your girlfriend..."
Archie almost laughed, until she continued.
"...but you are in love with me."
The air between them stilled, with Archie not denying it and going ahead to massage his temples instead. After a beat, he asked quietly, "How do you know that?"
Avery’s fingers trembled against him. "Well... I always knew ever since the first time we met."
Archie’s voice turned rough. "But you still hated me."
She shook her head. "No."
"That’s a lie," he said flatly. "There’s a higher chance of me believing you were never drugged tonight than believing you have never hated me."
Avery’s jaw set. "Then let me prove it."
"How?"
"Marry me."
Archie let out a disbelieving laugh, looking her up and down. "Since you seem so coherent now, I guess the drug’s worn off."
She shook her head. "I just want to marry you before we do anything. So you’ll be sure I mean it. That I’m not just... playing with you." She took a shaky breath. "You’re powerful. You can make it happen. Now. Tonight. In a few minutes."
Archie stared at her, his mind racing. She was serious. Or at least, as serious as someone still fighting off the effects of a sedative could be.
She continued, her words slightly slurred but determined. "It’ll be legal in every way. You’ll add me to your corporation. I will add you to mine. We’ll share everything equally."
