Avery's Game Of Revenge -
Chapter 156: Did His Wife Cheat?
Chapter 156: Did His Wife Cheat?
"Pretty?!" Archie spat the word out in disbelief, while the nurse beside him grew increasingly pale, obviously from shock.
Arthur nodded, his face scrunching up in displeasure.
"Yeah, that’s what I said. Don’t make the nurse think I’m joking, Arch. How would you feel if I did that to the girlfriend you carried upstairs just few minutes ago?" he hissed, then turned back to Stephanie, his lips curling into a smile, "Don’t mind the idiot, Sweetheart. What’s the name?"
Stephanie blinked while Archie’s head tilted in confusion, his eyes glazing over like he was in deep thought.
"Are you sure the doctor did a complete body check-up on this idiot, Ms. Brookes?" he asked, after a whole five seconds had passed by.
"I’m sure, Mr Donovan, since I was present in the room. He seemed completely alright at the time. Though I now think we might have made a mistake with our observation," Stephanie replied.
"Stop talking about me like I’m not here!" Arthur snapped. "It’s bad to stress an already weak patient, Nurse. Still waiting for your answer."
"Do not mind him," Archie held a hand up to Stephanie, as he closed the distance between himself and Arthur and lowered himself before him. "I asked before. What’s your name?"
"Don’t fuck with me—" Arthur started to say, when Archie cut him off, "Tell me your name and Nurse Brookes will tell you hers. For every bit of information you give me, she’ll give you an equivalent of it."
Arthur smirked. "Now that’s a transaction I would love to partake in. But what’s your deal anyway? I didn’t I stop you from making out with your pretty girlfriend earlier, why would you want to sabotage my own progress before it even starts?"
"My pretty girlfriend?!" Archie scoffed, momentarily forgetting what he was supposed to be dealing with. "That’s my wife, Arthur, my wife. Not my girlfriend. We are married. She proposed, and I said yes."
"Suit yourself," Arthur sneered. "She had a great body either way. And no, don’t look at me that way. She might have had a great body and looked pretty from the back, but I feel like I would rather die than see her as a potential lifetime companion in the same way I see Pretty Brookes here." His thumb slid across his lips, "I wonder why though. Is she my ex or something? One I broke up with and you picked—"
"Say one more word there and you’ll be looking at every single piece of your rotten teeth on the ground."
Arthur clamped his mouth shut, feeling the seriousness in the threat his friend just gave. He just woke up from a coma and found a pretty woman he was sure would make staying in bed easy for him; he wasn’t about to let Archie fuck it all up for him.
"You couldn’t tell who my wife was from the back?"
"Am I supposed to be able to tell who she is from her back alone?"
Archie didn’t reply to that. "Then I take it you don’t know Miss Brookes too."
"If I did, would I be sitting here and asking for her name?" Arthur rolled his eyes. Heck, his friend was stupid!
"That’s reasonable," Archie nodded. "But if you don’t know who either of them is, how do you know who I am then?"
Arthur was now frowning.
"Because you’re Arch. You are supposed to be my best friend, aren’t you?"
"And you thought of me as the first person to look for when you woke up? No one else?" Archie pressed.
"Who else would I have thought of?" Arthur’s expression morphed into a horror filled one. "Wait, don’t tell me I’m married too? Fuck, is my wife pretty? Tell me she is!"
"Shut up." Archie wiped a hand over his face, releasing an exasperated sigh. "This is so confusing. I will ask for the third and last time. What is your name?"
"Arthur."
"Surname?"
"This is weird. Can’t seem to remember what it is."
"Siblings?"
Arthur blinked. "Do I have one?"
Archie ignored the question.
"Parents?"
"This is getting more confusing. I can’t remember having any."
"Any other family member?"
At this point, Arthur had already noticed something was wrong with him. His fingers dug into his hair, pulling a large chunk in frustration.
"Can’t remember any. But from the way you’re interrogating me, I think I do have some. Tell me who they are."
"Damn, this is complicated," Archie murmured. But he wasn’t ready to let the fear of his friend’s reaction stop him from telling him everything he knew about him, and what had happened to him up until this moment. He adjusted his glasses and peered straight into Arthur’s eyes, noting the genuine curiosity in them. "Look, Arthur, this might be a little hard to wrap your head around."
"Just tell me. Starting from what my surname is."
"As you wish," Archie sighed. He patted his pocket for his phone. "But I think it would be better to have you see it yourself—"
"Mr Donovan, I don’t think you should!" Stephanie exclaimed from behind them.
"Why?" Both men chorused, and Stephanie flinched at the sharp gazes that descended on her. She almost backed down and told them it was a mistake, until she remembered something and her eyes brightened.
"I don’t think you should tell... Arthur." She began. Stephanie wasn’t used to addressing him by his name, and not Mr McCAllum. In fact, she wasn’t used to talking to him at all. Having his intense gaze on her now after yearning for it all these years, was more scary than delightful. But she needed to say this, so she continued, "We can wait for Dr Moon to return and carry out another overall check. From the results, we should be able to guage what our next step should be."
"What difference would that make?" Archie raised a brow.
Stephanie clasped and unclasped her hands nervously.
"It’s just... I think it’s unsafe to start telling him everything now without knowing if his mental health is stable enough to take it."
"Now I want to know everything immediately," Arthur stated. He turned to Archie with a tentative look in his eyes, "Why? What’s the worst that could have happened that is making Pretty Brookes worry about my mental health? My wife cheated on me? With my brother? Do I even have one?" That was the wildest thought in his mind as of right now.
Archie kept quiet, silently ruminating on and agreeing with Stephanie’s suggestion. He couldn’t just drop the bombshell on a newly recovered patient and expect him to handle it well, especially when this patient couldn’t remember everything that happened by himself.
What if he got angry on behalf of a family he couldn’t remember and went ahead to put himself in danger with the idiots who destroyed his family? There was high possibility of that happening.
"Will someone just answer me?!" Arthur drawled, his snap coming out weaker than he intended. "You two are scared that my mental health might be unstable, but I think unsated curiosity has better chances of rendering me insane than whatever you want to tell me."
When his friend remained quiet, he sighed, "Fuck, this is exhausting. Do I have a history of lunacy?"
"You will have one if you don’t stop talking soon," Archie deadpanned. "When did you become so talkative?"
"You are the..." Arthur wanted to retort, but trailed off, his eyes drifting close as his body fell to the ground.
Archie didn’t bother cushioning his head from falling to the ground, as Stephanie had already stepped forward and did it. She could take care of her crush while... damnit! He’d left Avery alone in the room for more than thirty minutes now. If she wasn’t asleep yet, she’d be super worried or curious already.
If she tried the door and saw that he locked it, then she would be more worried?
He shook his head to clear his thoughts and turned to Stephanie, "Do you need help taking him back?"
Stephanie almost glared up at him, but she remembered he was the one holding her life in his hands right now and he could do whatever he wanted with it, depending on how well behaved she was so she restrained herself early. Still she couldn’t help but ask herself, wasn’t it obvious enough that she would need his help in getting him back, considering how large Arthur was?
"Yes. Your help would be appreciated... Sir," she muttered.
Archie shrugged off her insincere appreciative words and heaved Arthur from her, slinging his arm over his own shoulders and carrying him across the foyer and through the normal door. He wasn’t about to let one more person know about the secret door that connected both penthouse apartments together, as he knew that would increase the probability of Avery finding out about her brother.
None of the siblings were in the right state to meet the other yet. None of the three siblings...
