Avery's Game Of Revenge -
Chapter 155: Germaphobe and Dust.
Chapter 155: Germaphobe and Dust.
Archie’s brows furrowed as he studied him, now lying on the ground with his hands holding his head up. There were a lot of things he had to worry about here.
First of all, if his friend had just woken up from a two months long coma, wasn’t he supposed to get a call from the doctors and nurses he put in charge of him, immediately it happened? And if by any chance, they had called him and he missed it, weren’t they supposed to have the patient under watch at least?
Last but not the least, why was his friend acting so strangely? Like a carefree idiot who woke up hungover from a drunk night, and not like a betrayed man who just woke up from a two months coma induced by a planned accident.
For days on end, Archie had imagined how things would look like, and what would happen when Arthur woke up. Would he be happy he survived, and make attempts to recover well? No. A blatant no to that. That scenario was highly impossible.
The Arthur he knew would ask why he didn’t let him die since, judging by the press, the rest of his family were dead. He would blame himself for what happened to his grandfather and younger siblings, just like Avery had done months ago and was still doing now. He would buy guns and probably go ahead and put a bullet through the heads of every single member of the present McCAllum family. Then he would probably put a bullet through his own head and die.
Archie had even imagined that Arthur wouldn’t spare him too, considering the fight they’d had the night before everything went down for his—Arthur’s—family. The punches he had thrown at his face, the threats he’d made, and the disgust in his eyes when he walked out the door of this very penthouse. He had expected to find that same look in his friend’s eyes when he woke up.
But why did he seem so carefree right now? Like the Arthur he knew before the fight that night?
Or wait... was this even Arthur?
"Hey," he called, to see his friend’s droopy eyes widen the slightest bit. "What’s your name?"
"What game is this one now?" Arthur scoffed, "Let’s talk about something more serious. Why was I sleeping in that stupid bed in the other apartment?"
Confusion flickered in Archie’s eyes at the question, but before he could say anything, a loud, frantic knock resounded on the door. One knock became two, and two became several knocks. It was obvious the person behind the door was in a hurry and needed it to be open urgently, but with him having a guess on who it might be, Archie took his time in crossing the foyer to pull the door open.
Sure enough, the door opened to a tear streaked, red face owned by Stephanie Brookes. She had her hands clasped together in front of her, and her eyes widened in fear as she looked up at him.
"Mr Donovan, I—" she started.
"I take it you’re looking for Arthur," Archie cut her off.
Stephanie seemed shocked, but then, as if she remembered the reason she was here, she burst into another round of tears.
"I left the room for just one second. Just—"
"Come in," Archie interrupted again. His dark gaze told her he wouldn’t be repeating his words, so she stepped into the threshold immediately, and held her breath as he slammed the door shut after her without fear of anyone hearing. Avery wouldn’t be coming down. He was sure of that, since he’d locked the door to the room when he came out.
Archie bypassed Stephanie along the threshold and walked further into the living room, coming to a stop behind the sofa that Arthur had now dragged himself to rest against.
"Care to tell me how he got here?" he asked, his voice reflecting his impatience and anger.
Stephanie sniffled, and a wave of relief hit her at the sight of the man lying just a few metres from her feet. Even though he had a stupid grin on his face right now and had no idea what trouble he had put her in.
"I—I’m so sorry, Mr Donovan. Doctor Moon was here when Mr Arthur woke up two hours ago, and after checking him and making sure he was alright, we tried calling you. You weren’t picking the call and since Doctor Moon had another emergency, he promised to be back in an hour or two."
"And you were left alone to watch him?" Archie raised a brow.
"We were three actually," Stephanie corrected, her voice lowering into a murmur.
"Of course, you were. I don’t pay y’all daily just for one person to watch this dickhead per night. And I don’t—"
"Now, now, Arch," Arthur interrupted him. "Don’t call me a dickhead and don’t—"
"Keep it down, Arthur. You don’t have an idea what image you’re projecting by lying on the floor like that, do you?" Archie turned back to Stephanie, ignoring Arthur’s weak protests, "I pay for exactly ten people to watch him per night and just three waited? Okay, go on. I’m listening."
"We uhm, some left early and only 4 of us were left to watch over him for tonight. After he woke up and they discovered there was low chance of an emergency happening tonight, they left one by one..." She hesitated, "I really shouldn’t be saying this."
"You would," Archie deadpanned. "When I fire you right here and now, won’t you?"
"No! I’m sorry, Mr Donovan. But in their defense, they didn’t go far. At least... they are still in the building."
"Asleep in one of the empty rooms?" Archie asked. If that was the case, he could understand them. They might have thought one person was enough to watch a weak patient and decided to rest their heads for the first time in months. That didn’t mean their action would go unpunished , but it would be understandable at least.
But Stephanie shook her head in reply. "Not really."
"Then where are they?" Archie bellowed.
"Down... On the ground floor, RNW. They wanted a night out to destress!" She blurted out, shivering in fear. It was obvious she hadn’t wanted to tattletale on her colleagues, but she also didn’t want to die as a martyr covering up for colleagues who didn’t like her in the first place.
"Good," Archie laughed, a wicked glint in his eyes. "But that doesn’t explain how he escaped from there. Did you fall asleep too?"
"No," Stephanie exclaimed, shaking her head vigorously. "He just finished eating, so I cleared the table and left the room. I stopped at the restroom on my way back and I guess I took a while in there. When I got back, he was gone."
Ah... so that was it. Archie turned to Arthur.
"You said you woke up and no one was beside you?"
"Yeah," Arthur grinned. "Wasn’t it obvious I just finished eating? Who would wake from such a long bed rest and start working immediately, especially after living on liquid nutrients for days or perhaps... weeks, judging by how weak I feel?"
"Does this look in any way like a joke to you?" Archie asked.
"Yeah." Arthur nodded, tilting his chin in Stephanie’s direction. "But I would have thought twice about doing that if I knew you’d take your anger out on this pretty nurse."
"Pretty?!" Archie spat the word out in disbelief, while the nurse beside him grew increasingly pale, obviously from shock.
It was no common knowledge that before Arthur’s accident, he never treated Stephanie normally, even though she was his youngest sister’s best friend. It wasn’t like he hated her. No, that part was left to Archie and Avery—the enemies at first sight duo. But he ignored Stephanie. Totally. Like she didn’t exist.
Archie had once heard a story of how Avery fought with him because he went to pick her up at school—she was still in high school then—opened the door for her, and didn’t do the same for her friend, Stephanie. Instead, Arthur had walked around to the other side, got in the car, and driven off.
Another time, Emma had also commented on how Arch and Avery’s relationship was far better than Arthur’s and Stephanie’s, which could be compared slightly to that between germaphobe and the dust in the corners of the room. He never noticed it, and when he did, he always frowned at it.
But then, that same Arthur had just called the same Stephanie pretty.
Shocking. Interesting. Confusing.
All at the same time.
