Avery's Game Of Revenge -
Chapter 135: Strong Sponsor
Chapter 135: Strong Sponsor
"She also attends NewDun so the fact that she got the role easily isn’t surprising. Only elites attend that university," Valentina pointed out.
"You see?" Roberts lips curved into a smug smile. "She attends NewDun, is a good actress even though she’s supposed to be a newbie, and she landed a role on Broken Hearts. She’s an important side character, according to you, and the director seems to like her. Where could she have gotten that much power within the one month of peace we had before she appeared on your set?"
"Who knows?" Brian spoke up. "She had a wide connection while she was still the acting president of McCAllum Group of Companies."
"But none of them could have enough power to back her up with everything I just cited. None would even believe her. They have nothing to gain," Roberts argued.
Brian sat up, his brows raising slightly.
"I agree with your first two statements that none of them would believe her, and they have nothing to gain from helping her. But the first... I think there’s someone she knew that could have helped her. Someone that has enough power to do all these things we just cited."
"Who?" Kathy shifted to the edge of her seat.
Brian tilted his head, as if in deep thought, a dry smile sitting on his lips.
"Ava Donovan... Archibald Donovan, doesn’t that sound too suspicious?"
"Nah. That’s impossible," all four McCallums waved their hands in quick dismissal. Kathy sat back, and Valentina let out a deep breath of relief.
Brian looked taken aback at the way they quickly dismissed him.
"What? You don’t suspect the man at all?" he asked. "He was Arthur’s best friend, wasn’t he? Even though they rarely hang out around here, I think he could have met Avery and recognized her. And let’s say, he helped her because he believed she couldn’t have killed his friend. Isn’t that a plausibility reason?"
Valentina shook her head.
"Big nah to that. Avery has in fact, met Chairman Donovan, but even if he were the last person left on earth to help her, she wouldn’t go to him. And neither would he even accept if she swallowed her pride and crawled to him."
Kathy took the words from her daughter’s mouth and continued, "The passionate hatred they have for each other is no news around here. And apart from our confidence that he wouldn’t have helped Avery if she went to him, he also wouldn’t have helped Arthur if it was Arthur that went to him."
Brian frowned in perplexity.
"Why wouldn’t he? Aren’t they supposed to be best friends?"
Jon spoke for the first time in minutes, "They had a terrible fight the night before you were supposed to marry Ava. It’s the reason we were able to take them down so easily, or Chairman Donovan might have saved them. If not for anyone, but for his friend."
"That’s... surprising," Brian whistled, before asking in a thoughtful manner, "What might have caused their fight though? Anyone have an idea?"
Roberts sighed.
"Who cares about a fight that happened more than two months ago? Let’s face the problem at hand right now. Valentina said her co-worker is Avery, and we are to convince her that woman is not Avery." He turned back to his sister, "As I was saying before Brian interrupted, this girl... what’s her name again?"
"Ava Donovan," Valentina murmured, a hint of exhaustion in her voice.
"Yes, that one," Roberts continued, "She seems to have a strong sponsor and as impossible as it is for Avery to have escaped the car before it exploded, it’s more impossible for her to snag such a powerful sponsor within the month and then return to the country."
"Then why does she look a lot like Avery?"
Kathy rolled her eyes.
"Like your brother said, maybe you’re just being paranoid, Tina. Remember you said sometimes last month that you saw a torn magazine page on your dressing table, yet it turned out to be nothing serious—"
"It wasn’t nothing!" Valentina snapped, agitated. "I really did see my name. I made a mistake of tearing it before—"
"Shut your mouth, Tina. And let your mother conclude before cutting her off," Jon chastised.
Kathy continued, "Like I was saying, you might just be blowing this up to be much more than it really is. Maybe this Ava girl doesn’t even look that much like Avery as—"
Valentina laughed out loud, her voice laced with mockery.
"Don’t go there, Mom. Don’t you watch the news?" she questioned, her voice tinged with disbelief. With the way Ava Donovan’s face was being splashed all over the news and social media forums these past few weeks, she didn’t expect any of her family to still think the girl wasn’t that similar looking to Avery.
Perhaps this explained why none of them was eager to get to the root of this matter.
Kathy dismissed that argument with a wave of her hand. She asked, "Who doesn’t know how much the press distorts news and images to fit their own need? If anyone doesn’t, at least those of us in this room should be well aware. Since we have used their services not once, not twice, and definitely not thrice."
Valentina nodded in reluctance.
"Well, I agree. But not on this one. Ava looks exactly like Avery, minus the hair color and the eyes which is not as kind as Avery’s..." While she blabbered on, she failed to see the way Jon and Brian suddenly sat up, their eyes sparkling in interest.
Jon requested, "Do you have a picture of this girl? Not one from the press, of course. And not that one where they she was wearing a bikini; she and the other girl’s hair blocked their face and I wasn’t able to confirm she really looked similar."
"I have one!" Valentina exclaimed.
She reached forward to pick up her phone, switching it on and quickly going to display the selfie Avery had just posted earlier that morning, in an outfit similar to the one Valentina was still wearing.
While she searched the image out, the others, mainly Jon and Brian, waited impatiently. The silence stretched from seconds to minutes until Kathy jerked her head sideways to her husband.
"Wait... Jon, what do you mean by what you said just now? You once checked out a picture of this... Ava Donovan in a bikini. What for?"
