"Spend the night in my bed. With me."

As the last of the words fell from his lips, Archie’s gaze dropped from Avery’s face, scaling past the pale skin of her neck and down the thin fabric that covered soft mounds of her chest. His clouded gaze lingered there for a second longer before lowering down to her exposed lower belly, where his eyes finally stopped moving.

Fuck. Was she wearing that when she left the house earlier today?

"Did I hear that right?" Avery’s soft voice pulled his eyes back to her face, zeroing in on the pink lips that were slightly parted in disbelief. He stepped closer, raising a hand to rub the pad of his thumb against her lower lip.

"Where is your coat?" he asked a question of his own instead of answering hers.

Avery blinked in confusion, partly from the question he asked and partly, from what his thumb was doing to her lips.

"My coat?"

"Yes, your coat. I’m sure you didn’t leave the penthouse wearing just... that, right?" He dropped his hand from her face and folded his arms across his chest to stop himself from doing it again.

The confusion in her eyes deepening, Avery looked down at the outfit she was wearing and frowned. Sure, this wasn’t her style but it didn’t mean she could not wear it. And if she was to judge by the comments she had received on the post she made, few people thought she looked better in it than Valentina did. That was excluding the insulting comments, of course.

She tilted her head to meet his gaze, "I actually left the penthouse wearing this alone. What about it?" The question at the end had a challenging undertone to it.

"I don’t like you wearing it," Archie deadpanned.

"And why do you think I should care what you like or not?"

His eyes narrowed in displeasure. "Oh really? I guess it’s a good thing you don’t care." He retrieved his phone from his pocket and switched it on, all while maintaining the eye contact with her, "Now care to tell me how many men have seen you wearing this?"

"Huh?"

"You heard me right," Archie growled. "Start your count from the second you stepped out of the penthouse to this very moment? In fact, don’t bother going that far, just tell me how many men saw you within the time period of your leaving the penthouse up till the second you stepped through the doors of the lobby in the ground floor. I will use the CCTV to make out the rest by myself."

"How am I expected to know that?" Avery eyed him like he had just grown two horns on either sides of his head. "Why should I even bother recounting that?"

"Because I asked," Archie deadpanned in response.

"Who are—"

"Answer me, Avery. Give me numbers," he demanded, cutting her off mid-sentence.

Avery stepped back, her eyes narrowed in suspicions. As taken aback as she was that he just used her real name, she didn’t bother dwelling on why he called her that but instead took the opportunity to realize he was being very serious. He really wanted her to tell him how many men she had seen since she stepped out of the house today?

Scoffing in disbelief, she could not hide the sarcasm in her voice when she asked, "What are you? Stupid? Am I expected to look around and count how many people saw me since I left home till I arrived here? Do I look that jobless to you?"

Archie didn’t seem fazed by her reaction.

"I’m not asking you to tell me how many people saw you. Just the men. Including women would only mean your new friend has to be included. I don’t think you would like that."

"What the heck are you even saying, Archie?" she laughed. "What I said and what you just said, does it sound any different to your ears? Why would I busy myself with counting men? Besides, what do you need their numbers for?"

Archie gritted his teeth, his eyes hardening into a glare and softening almost within the exact same second.

"Doesn’t matter," he seethed, pushing his glasses up his nose, with his middle finger. "Still talking about the men, was there anyone in particular that ogled you? Or someone who gawked at you; male or female?" Possessiveness dripped from his voice as he waited impatiently for her answer.

Avery folded her arms across her chest and challenged him with her eyes.

"And if there was? What’re you gonna do about it?"

"Gouge his or her eyes out."

"What?!" she exclaimed.

"Why?" Archie countered calmly. "You said you don’t care what I think about what you wear. Then you also shouldn’t care about the actions I take concerning what you wear."

"But I wear it," Avery pressed, placing emphasis on the word ’I’ as if she was scared Archie wouldn’t understand if she didn’t do that. "I wear it on my own body, not yours."

"You do," he affirmed. Lowering his voice into a murmur, he added, "And your body is mine."

"And I can take decisions on what I want to wear without having to ask your permission first."

"I’m not arguing against that."

"Then why don’t you like me wearing it?"

Archie paused for a while, rubbing his index finger against his chin as his lips curved into a smirk.

"Ah... my bad. I do like you wearing it, but I don’t want you wearing it in a place anyone else can just see you."

Avery scoffed. This was supposed to make her feel wanted; it was supposed to hint at the attraction the man before her held for her—or her body. But she was far too gone to think about that.

"That’s the point!" she snapped, her voice increasing in pitch with each word she spoke. "I shouldn’t care what you, or any other man for that matter, thinks about what I wear in or out of my house as long as I’m not parading myself naked on their property. My clothes shouldn’t affect them."
