Avery's Game Of Revenge
Chapter 123: Serious And Breathtaking.

Chapter 123: Serious And Breathtaking.

"Great then! Our trip there wouldn’t be a waste since all three of us have things to gain," Avery stated, refusing to give Jodi the opportunity to refuse her offer. Not like the latter could do that anyway, now that there was a tangible excuse for all three of them to visit the headquarters.

"You should go," she urged. Avery shooed them playfully and turned to the guard standing closest to Neil, "I’m ready now. Let’s get on our way.

’Why the hell did I have to create such a bothersome excuse without back-up in mind?’

As she trailed after the burly bodyguard that drove her from the airport to this place, only one question echoed in Avery’s mind. Just why had she chosen this one lie to say?! And with no proper escape plan in mind, at that.

I think I uh... need to see Archie real quick too.

When Avery made that excuse an hour ago, she’d thought there would be a way to escape following through with the plan; that is, going up to meet Archie.

’I can just tell them another lie when we get there, and then leave with Jodi,’ she had thought. At least, her aim of helping Jodi ride with Neil would have been achieved by then.

But how the hell was she expected to know that Neil would change his mind halfway through the journey and decide he wouldn’t be joining the meeting after all? Instead of going straight to the headquarters like they planned, he had dismissed the guard and driver with them, leaving only Jodi with him, and then turned the car around and headed to ’God knows where’.

Not only that, none of them had even thought to message her about the development since, according to them, telling her wouldn’t change anything. They said she was the one who had told them she ’wanted to visit Archie’, after all.

Avery had only been informed by the guard that drove her, after their own car pulled up in front of the wide entrance of the A² Corp. Headquarters building. At the time, she had alighted and looked back to see the Maybach was nowhere to be found. At first, she had been delighted to see that Jodi and Neil had gone ahead to spend more time with each other. Until she asked the guard to hand her the keys so she could go home, and he said his assignment wasn’t completed until he led her straight to where Archie was.

Why?!

No amount of requesting and pleading could get the guard to change his mind about that. Even when she resorted to using her position as Archie’s wife to order him to let her be, all the man said was that her position was the exact reason he wasn’t obeying her and had to complete his assignment.

At the end—when Avery had finally realized they were attracting unnecessary attention— she gave in to his demands and followed him into the building. They had barely passed the receptionist desk when someone recognized her as Ava Donovan, and that prompted her to take out a nose mask and fasten it across her face, hoping they arrive at Archie’s office with no further interruptions.

What would she even tell him if he asked why she was here?

"I could just say the truth," she murmured beneath her breath. "He will understand. It’s not bad that I lied to help a couple spend more time together without getting burdened by the thought that they are wasting someone else’s time."

"Ma’am?"

The guard’s deep voice pulled her out of her thoughts, and she raised her head to see that they had finally arrived on the floor Archie’s office was situated and were currently standing in an empty hallway.

She blinked. "Yes? You were saying something?"

"The boss’ meeting is still ongoing," the guard informed.

A wave of relief washed through Avery’s system.

"You mean to say Archie is still busy?" she asked stupidly, an effect of her sudden lift in mood. "Well... That’s no problem. I can come back later," she stated, her voice reflecting a little more enthusiasm than was necessary.

The guard shook his head slowly.

"You won’t need to, Ma’am. I was told you could join the meeting if you wanted, or I could lead you to his office to wait."

"No, it’s alright. I’ll wait," Avery made her decision within the twinkle of an eye. "You are leaving, right?"

The guard nodded in affirmation and she smiled. It would be easier to leave if he left her here, than if he left her at the office. For the latter situation, she would have go through a horde of secretaries and suspicious gazes before she could leave.

"Here, ma’am." The guard handed her the keys to the rented car. He pointed down the hall where a glass—seemingly soundproof— room was. "That’s the strategy meeting room."

She took it from him. "Thank you. You should be on your way now though. I don’t want to take more of your time than I already did."

The guard gave one last bow and walked away, disappearing around the hallway down the corner. Avery began counting down to the moment she wouldn’t hear his footsteps anymore.

One... Two... Three... Four...

She needed him to go far enough before leaving here herself as she would hate to end up running into him and getting led back here.

As Avery counted, she found herself taking small steps down the hall. It was partly out of curiosity and partly out of her will to do something so that the time would move faster and she could leave here early. She stopped when she could get a glimpse of the ’glass conference room’ interior, and immediately knew she was right. About the room being soundproof.

Why? Because she couldn’t hear the voice of anyone from outside even though there was obviously more than one person talking within the room at the moment. And with the looks on their faces, she knew the ongoing conversation wasn’t one that was discussed with a low voice.

Avery concluded that whatever heated discussion going on in there was none of her business, so she allowed her eyes wander from end of the room to the other, her eyes brightening with each familiar person she saw in there. Ian, Donald, and Benedict Sherman, until they came to settle on Archie.

"He is angry," she noticed immediately, spotting the deep furrow in his brows.

He was glaring hard at the man standing before the presentation board, but Avery didn’t see that. What she noticed instead, was his rigid posture, tension radiating from him like a storm barely held in check.

He was wearing a sleek grey suit, tailored to perfection, the fabric catching the low light in a subtle sheen. His white dress shirt, crisp and unwrinkled, contrasted sharply against his tanned skin. His jaw was clenched, and the muscles in his neck visibly taut.

Avery knew she should leave now but... damn! She couldn’t lift her feet from that spot.

He might be looking extremely incensed right now, but that made him look both serious and breathtaking at the same time.

Maybe it was the permanent frown on his face, or the fountain pen whose edge he kept digging into the desk. Perhaps it was because she’d never seem him so focused, so fixated on something that wasn’t her or his books; but he looked so different right now. It was the first time since she got to know him, that she was seeing him and had the time to examine his features properly, before he became aware of her presence.

Most times, he always noticed her before she did, him. At other times, they would notice each other at the exact same time, and she couldn’t ogle him when that happened. But today was different. And Avery was determined to use this opportunity to the maximum.

She would have done exactly that if Archie didn’t direct his gaze towards the door exactly at that moment, the smile that broke out on his face causing a hitch in Avery’s breath. And she found herself returning it.

’It’s because I’m in a good mood, not because his smile is so compelling that I can’t see myself not returning it,’ she told herself inwardly.

"Hi," Avery mouthed, wriggling her fingers in a small wave. She had to leave, even though she had just been caught.
