Avery's Game Of Revenge -
Chapter 122: Airport
Chapter 122: Airport
Avery looked around, wondering inwardly why they were stopping here instead of a private hangar.
"He travelled business class since Mr Donovan wasn’t with him," Jodi informed, deducing the vivid questions in her eyes even without her—Avery— saying a word. She added, "But he won’t be passing through protocol, so don’t bother about us waiting too long. I’ll bet there’s a car, driver and bodyguards waiting for him as we speak right now."
Avery whipped her head sideways. The car had pulled to a total stop so she now had Jodi’s whole attention.
"If there’s a car, driver and bodyguards waiting for him, then what are we doing here?" she asked.
"I... " Jodi hesitated, her eyes dimming slightly when she continued, "I guess I just missed him. He said in the message that he’ll be heading straight to the headquarters for an emergency meeting. He also said there’s a high chance that might end up leading to another business trip. It might be my only opportunity to see him for another month so..." she trailed off, expecting questions, but got none.
Apparently, Avery didn’t see anything wrong with what she said. Even she who was in a fake marriage missed her fake husband whom she bore absolutely no feelings for when he was away for less than two weeks. How was she to fault someone in a real relationship for missing her boyfriend? But still...
"That’s understandable," she nodded slightly, "But shouldn’t that be the more reason why Neil should be picked up by you? Or rather, you should join him in his own ride. That way, you two get to spend more time together."
"It’s not that simple..." Jodi argued. She was in the middle of shaking her head, contemplating whether to tell Avery a bit of what her situation was, when her eyes caught the familiar figure in the distance.
With an hulky guard behind him, he was walking briskly towards a waiting black Maybach that had two dark clothed guards standing in front of it.
The Maybach was right in front of the car they were in, so she could see Neil’s face clearly as he approached. Her brows furrowed when she saw the wide smile on his face, and she frowned. He had his phone in his hand and it looked like he was texting someone.
Jodi’s thoughts were confirmed when he raised the phone as if to take a selfie, before going back to texting furiously.
"He’s texting someone," she murmured. "It’s definitely not Mr Donovan cause there’s no way he’d text him with a smile. He clearly just arrived in the country. Who could he be texting with that wide smile on his face? Coming here is such a bad idea."
"I don’t think so, Jo," Avery’s voice came from behind her. She chuckled, "Would you please check your texts before your phone blows up with how many messages he’s sent? Jealousy looks good on you."
"What?" Jodi turned swiftly, grabbing her phone from the dashboard beside her where she’d set it earlier. Sure enough, she had 18 unread texts from Neil and one of them was a selfie.
She didn’t bother reading the messages. Instead, she pushed the door open and eased herself out of the car, drawing the attention of the guards standing in front of the Maybach, with how loudly she slammed the door shut.
Their gazes moving from the approaching Neil to her, meant Neil also followed their line of sight to see what had caused the distraction. The confusion in his eyes cleared while the smile on his face brightened as he slipped the phone in his pocket.
"You came."
Two words.
Even though his voice wasn’t loud, she heard those words clearly enough to feel the emotion ridden undertone it bore.
"I did. Our set is close by and I had spare time so I thought why not just take a short drive down here," she lied.
"She came because she missed you," Avery cut in, popping her head out of the driver’s side window. With the charged atmosphere that seemed to exist between the couple outside the car, she had ruled out the possibilities of driving back with Jodi. Therefore, she’d moved herself from the passenger’s seat to the driver’s seat to inform them she was leaving.
"Ava!"
She ignored Jodi’s embarrassed call and continued, "Sure, we had spare time. But she wanted to come here as soon as she could so... what was that statement again, Jo?" She chuckled. "Yeah, so she wouldn’t miss the opportunity to see you for another one month."
"I didn’t—" Jodi tried to argue, but Neil, who had now gotten close to them, chimed in, "I think Miss Ava is right. Your face wouldn’t be so red if she was lying."
"My face isn’t red. It’s the heat... I think."
"Here we go again," Avery giggled, mischief twinkling in her eyes at the mortified blush on Jodi’s face. She nodded at Neil, "Welcome. Nice to see you back. Jodi will be taking the ride with you, right?"
"Yes, she will." He flashed her a genuine smile and added, "As long as she wants to."
"Then I should go." Avery nodded. That was expected.
Averting her gaze back to Jodi, she informed, "I have nowhere else to go so I’ll be home. Don’t forget. Whatever you do, time limit is 4 PM or Leroy might chop our heads off. Byeeee!"
"You are leaving?" Neil questioned, his eyes widening in surprise.
Avery blinked.
"Or what? I refuse to be a third wheel or join in on whatever you two plan to do," she exclaimed, turning the key in the car’s ignition. "I will just drive myself home safely and wait for Jodi to come back. Simple, ain’t it?"
Neil shook his head.
"I also refuse to bear the brunt of someone’s anger later today over something I could have avoided. You won’t be driving yourself, Miss Ava. At least, not alone. One of the guards will come with you," he stated.
Avery didn’t bother refusing the offer. There was only one person whose anger Neil could be scared of incurring, and if accepting the company of the guard would put their mind at rest, she had no qualms with doing so.
"Which of them will be coming with me?" she asked.
"You could chose one," he offered. His gaze darted back to the waiting Maybach and a frown creased his forehead. "It still kind of feels wrong to send you on your own, even with a guard, though."
"For me, it doesn’t just feel wrong. It is actually wrong to come with you guys so let’s cut this and be on our separate ways," Avery disagreed with him.
"Let’s do this," Jodi cut in. She glanced at Neil. "You still have plans to leave soon, right? How many hours do you have left?"
As he replied, Neil’s brown eyes dimmed in disappointment.
"A few hours, maybe. Just until we get to the headquarters and conclude the meeting, then I’ll be off."
"That means we just have the drive to the headquarters to catch up, right? "It’s not worth Avery leaving then," she stated.
Neil sighed, "I’m sorry. I had no idea you would come receive me or I’d have found a lie to tell Arch. Now..."
"It’s alright," Jodi whispered. She already got the answer she needed from his apology. She turned back to Avery. "I saw him already. Let’s just leave. We could hang around and get the lunch you promised later on."
"Or you could accompany him to the office while I follow in this car with the guard. Then you swap rides when he leaves," Avery proposed. Why was she feeling like she had unconsciously roped herself in a complicated relationship issue?
Jodi refused, "That’s too much trouble for you. It’s not worth it."
Instead of agreeing immediately, Avery allowed her eyes to wander between her friend and Neil, studying their facial expressions. And from that, she noticed that neither really wanted to go along with what one of them just suggested.
"Uhm..." she started, gripping both of their attentions as she weaved a quick lie, "I think I uh... need to see Archie real quick too. If I get to the headquarters now, would I be able to, Neil?"
"You should," Neil replied. He took out his phone and scrolled through a spreadsheet, "According to what I have here. He has no important appointments after the meeting. Just leisurely ones."
"Great then! Our trip there wouldn’t be a waste since all three of us have things to gain."
