Chapter 90: Chapter 89 Death and Chaos Itself

Olivia’s scream had barely escaped her lips when strong arms caught her mid-fall. Her breath rushed out of her lungs as she crashed into a warm chest, her face buried against his steady heartbeat.

She gasped.

’Lucian.’ Her eyes landed on his face.

He held her tightly, his grip steady despite the sudden weight in his arms. The branches above them rustled gently; he had leapt down from the tree.

"You really like falling into trouble, don’t you?" Lucian said, his voice calm, but there was a flicker of concern in his eyes.

Olivia’s heart slammed against her chest. She opened her mouth to speak, but only managed a breathless, "You... you caught me."

"Of course," he said. "Again."

Lucian gently set her down, his hand lingering a second too long on her waist before stepping back. Olivia coughed, trying to hide the furious blush creeping up her neck.

She didn’t miss the way his eyes lingered on her a moment longer than necessary before looking away.

The awkward silence between them lingered just a beat too long. Olivia brushed imaginary dust from her pants, suddenly unsure where to put her hands. Lucian stared off toward the school path, already walking ahead.

"Let’s get to class. You don’t want to give Verax another reason to fry you."

She fell in step beside him. Just as they neared the main hallway that led to the academy’s inner court, a voice rang from behind her.

"Olivia!"

She turned, eyes lighting up when she saw Diana and Ellie standing near the courtyard arch. Ellie waved cheerfully. Diana smiled too, but her smile didn’t quite reach her eyes.

Olivia ran toward them, arms swinging slightly as she closed the gap.

"Ellie! Diana!" she called, her voice bright with relief. "It has been a while since I last saw you guys!"

Ellie nodded with a smile before pulling her into a quick hug. "It’s been a crazy few days. We heard what happened with the Wailroot monsters... Are you okay?"

"I’m fine now," Olivia replied with a small smile, then turned to Diana. "You look exhausted. Are you alright?"

Diana’s smile twitched. "Nightmares," she said simply, her voice too steady for how pale she looked.

In truth, Diana had barely slept. For nights, she had seen the same nightmare: Olivia dying, surrounded by chaos and death, her body turning into flakes of red fiery flame. And in the center of it all, the man with the burning golden and merciless eyes, devouring her essence, her soul.

Diana had come here with a plan.

She was going to pull Olivia aside. Talk her into a quiet walk. Lead her to a secluded space. Then... she would do what had to be done.

But just as she was rethinking her plan, Lucian’s quiet footsteps echoed behind Olivia as he joined the group.

"Are these your friends?" he asked, his gaze flicking over Ellie briefly, then resting on Diana. He knew them; it was just that none of them had remembered he was the little white snake that transformed into the dragon, that had bought them time to survive.

Diana turned slowly. Her eyes locked on him. And her breath caught.

’No.’ Her legs went cold, her stomach flipping violently. Her body pulsed and then trembled for a moment, like it couldn’t comprehend what it was sensing.

It was him. The man that had stabbed Olivia and killed her. He was him... The exact face from her nightmares. The very embodiment of chaos. The destroyer. The one who absorbed her into himself like a ravenous void.

He looked exactly the same.

Too alike. The only difference was his eyes. The man in her vision had a golden iris, but the person standing in front of her has grey eyes.

Her vision blurred for a split second. Fear crawled up her spine, thick and suffocating. Her legs threatened to fail her, but she can’t collapse here, not... not in his presence.

"Diana?" Ellie asked, nudging her gently. "Are you okay?"

"I..." Diana opened her mouth but couldn’t speak. Her heartbeat roared in her ears. Lucian tilted his head at her, his grey eyes narrowing slightly. "Have we met before?"

He asked. For some weird reason, he felt he had seen her apart from when they were in the domain. But he could not remember exactly where. And the fear that was emanating from her told him something was wrong. She knew something... something about him that he even had no idea of.

Diana shook her head too quickly. "N...No. Not at all."

But the truth was already written across her pale face. She had seen him. Not here, not now, but in the vision. The very one that has been haunting her every single night.

He was death, and chaos itself. But what is he doing here? And... he already found Olivia. Was the vision coming faster than she had expected?

Olivia’s brows furrowed. Diana was acting differently. Something was off about her. This wasn’t the Diana she had met in the domain, the one that was elegant and reserved like she knew all the mystery of the world.

She glanced at Lucian. Diana had been acting strangely since she saw him. Did she know something about him? But what did she know that would make her this shaken?

If she is this uncomfortable in his presence, then she wouldn’t torture anybody. "Yes, these are my friends, Diana and Ellie," she quickly introduced.

"Guys, this is Lucian, the transfer student from Suncrest," she briefly added. Ellie nodded her head, while Diana looked down at her feet, afraid to see those eyes again.

"We will get going now. I will catch up with you guys later in the day, okay?" she cheerfully added, pulling Lucian away from them.

Lucian cast a last glance at Diana before following Olivia.

As soon as Olivia and Lucian walked out of view, Diana’s trembling knees buckled. She fell to the ground, her hand clenching at her chest as if to hold back the storm building inside her.
