Chapter 85: Chapter 84 Combat (2)
Freya floated in the air, her head tilted toward the sky. Dark clouds churned above like a living storm, responding to her call. The cyclone twisted tighter, darker, then a blinding lightning cracked across the sky.
She screamed a raw, piercing sound, and hurled both hands downward.
A bolt of pure lightning tore through the clouds, ripping toward Nathan with terrifying force.
Gasps echoed.
Nathan widened his stance, his cyclone intensifying, spinning so fast it carved into the ground beneath him. He crossed his arms and growled, then thrust them outward. The cyclone expanded, catching the lightning mid-air.
The impact created a thunderous shockwave that blasted dust and energy across the field. Some of the new students screamed, shielding their faces. A few were knocked off their feet from the sheer pressure. But the old students stood still, as if it was a mere breeze.
When the smoke cleared, Freya was hovering in the air, panting. Nathan knelt, one palm braced against the dirt, a trickle of blood running from his nose.
"You’re strong," he muttered. "But I’m not weak."
Freya didn’t respond. She raised her hand again, her eyes glowing dangerously. Another strike? Olivia narrowed her eyes from the crowd. If Freya used that much power again, she might break the no-critical-damage rule. Olivia scoffed. Of course, her sister would do anything to win. Who was she kidding?
Nathan charged forward, riding on a blast of wind. Freya met him in mid-air, lightning wrapped around her fists. The two clashed—wind against lightning—then crackling energy spilled in every direction.
Then...
Stefan raised his hand. A wave of transparent energy covered the arena, suppressing the force of the battle.
"That’s enough," he said coolly.
The two combatants froze mid-blow.
Nathan dropped to the ground, exhausted. Freya landed gently, breathing hard, her eyes still lit with hunger.
"The winner is... Freya Donovan," Stefan announced.
A chorus of murmurs rippled through the crowd. Some students looked amazed, others terrified. A smirk formed on Freya’s lips. She did it. Accomplishing the mission of her system seemed to be of great benefit. She had leveled up four times in a matter of days.
Olivia’s blood simmered. That power... the scream... everything about it was unnatural. Freya wasn’t this strong. Something was wrong somewhere.
She clenched her jaw. If she’s next, she has to be ready.
And this battlefield... wasn’t just a stage for strength. It was a stage for chaos.
Stefan’s eyes briefly lingered on Freya’s retreating frame before he focused on the crowd again.
"The next on our list is Lizzy Breton and Tasha Evermore," he hit the tong, a smirk forming on his lips.
The two girls entered the stage. Tasha was trembling on her feet. She was the one who had asked if it was possible not to fight.
Lizzy smirked before conjuring metals, molding them into armour. Tasha almost lost her balance. She weakly swirled her hand, but nothing happened.
Mockery laughter echoed through the air.
Tasha’s eyes blurred, tears welling in them. She bit her lips to suppress the cry, and she tried again. This time, a weak green vine sprouted out of her palm.
Tasha’s weak vine coiled up her forearm like a shaky promise. The crowd kept laughing—some out loud, others muffled behind their hands.
Lizzy smirked confidently. With a flick of her fingers, sharp metal disks hovered around her like floating blades.
"Are you sure you want to keep going?" she taunted.
Tasha’s breath hitched. Her legs trembled slightly, but she nodded. "Yes."
Olivia furrowed her brows. Something about Tasha’s stance seemed... off. Fearful, yes—but also oddly focused.
Stefan didn’t blink. "Begin."
The air rang with the clash of metal as Lizzy launched two blades toward Tasha’s legs. Tasha leapt sideways, stumbling as one nicked her calf.
She winced.
Lizzy advanced with precision, blades dancing around her like trained hounds. Tasha retreated quickly, vines lashing out—weakly, barely enough to hold her ground.
But then...
Something blurred through the battleground.
Tasha suddenly surged forward, her vines strengthening, twisting unnaturally fast. They wrapped around Lizzy’s ankles, yanking her balance out from under her.
Lizzy gasped and fell hard, her metal armour clanking.
"What the..." she grunted, trying to rise.
Tasha clenched her fists, and her vines slammed Lizzy back down with unexpected strength, that even the ground cracked slightly beneath her.
Whispers filled the crowd.
"That’s not normal..." someone muttered.
Even Stefan’s eyes narrowed slightly.
Tasha’s lips moved barely as she whispered to her system. Her arm glowed faintly... and her vine grew barbs.
Olivia’s eyes sharpened. She wasn’t using just her natural power. She had system enhancements activated—maybe even a forbidden booster. It made her remember when she had a deal with the system. Olivia didn’t really know what Tasha had to offer to gain the momentary boost, but she knew that it was never a good one.
Lizzy shrieked as the vine wrapped around her wrist, piercing through her metal armour, pinning her arm.
"I yield! I yield!"
Stefan raised a hand. The vines instantly crumbled into dust, and Tasha fell to her knees, panting as if she had just broken her limits.
"Winner: Tasha Evermore."
The crowd went silent for a moment. Then hesitant and confused claps scattered through the air.
Tasha stood, tears still clinging to her lashes. She smiled shakily. She looked like a girl who had just won her life back. She didn’t believe she had just won a fight.
Tasha proudly walked out of the battleground, although her legs were still trembling. A portion of Lizzy’s energy was absorbed by the ground. Lizzy walked out with her head facing the ground. She held her hand against her chest.
"Now the next on our list is Klaus Reyes and our new student, Lucian Drakenhart. Newbies, watch what a real fight is supposed to be like."
Klaus’s jaw twitched, but his gaze remained cool.
"Watch how I defeat him," he said to Olivia, before walking to the stage.
Meanwhile, Olivia’s eyes lingered on Lucian, who was striding to the battleground, hands tucked in his pockets, cold aura spilling from him. Her hands clenched beside her.
Klaus and Lucian stood a few feet opposite each other. Stefan came in between them.
"I’m raising the stake. The winner gets a level 10 monster’s core."
The crowd burst into chatters.
"And release the monsters!" Stefan’s said, his voice was like steel slicing through silence.
