Chapter 147: Chapter 146 The Ruined City (1)
Olivia glanced over the faces of her teammates. She had never believed she would be in the same team as Alexa.
Her eyes lingered on Alexa for a moment longer. The aura that was exuding from her was that of a powerful warrior, confident and intimidating.
Her eyes flicked to the twins who were seated at the far end of the seat opposite her. They both had fear in their eyes, and her thoughts traveled back to when they tried to merge. Liam’s eyes stared back at her, and she quickly averted her gaze.
She wondered what could have caused those angry scars across his eye. Her eyes traveled outside the window. She stared with a mixture of fear, anticipation, and curiosity. She had seen pictures of what the world was once before the monster’s invasion.
She couldn’t believe a place as beautiful and mesmerizing could be turned into something so desolate and empty like this.
She stared at the collapsed buildings, protruding rods, shattered glass scattered along the sides of the road.
Some of the buildings stood tall, like they had been half bitten off by something massive. Then their van suddenly stopped at the edge of a bridge.
"We will be walking from here," the voice of the driver echoed from the front of the van.
"Why would we be walking?" A boy with golden blonde hair asked, his voice laced with irritation and annoyance.
"Come see for yourself." The other voice replied, matching his level of arrogance.
With that, they all walked out of the van. Their eyes widened in surprise when they saw what lay in front of them.
Hundreds of cars were scattered across the bridge, making it impossible for a vehicle to pass through.
"I guess we’ll be walking from here," Alexa muttered. "Grab everything we’ll be needing. Remember to carry only the things that are important. We need to travel as light as possible," she ordered.
Olivia hurriedly went back with the others to the other van, which was filled with the basic amenities they were going to need. After taking what was needed, they began to make their way across the bridge.
Seeing that Klaus was distracted with packing his bag, she quickly slid to Lucian’s side. "Hey."
"Hey," Lucian replied back.
They maneuvered their way through the jammed cars. Olivia’s heart raced. She didn’t know what to say to him, but she had this strange feeling that he was trying to avoid her. Was it because of Klaus? Or was there another reason behind it? She just couldn’t tell.
When she couldn’t bear the silence anymore, she parted her lips, forcing her thoughts out. "It seems like you are avoiding me. Did I do something wrong?"
Lucian turned, sparing her a glance. "No, I’m not avoiding you. I’m just giving you space."
"Space? What does that mean?"
Lucian stopped, facing her. "It means exactly what it spells."
Olivia tried to blink the glint of pain from her eyes. "Did I do something that would make you feel this way?"
Lucian resumed walking. He chuckled, "No, you didn’t do anything, Olivia."
Olivia bit her lower lip. She really wanted to talk it out with him, but the cold shoulder he was giving her made her give him space. She had thought that it was because of Klaus, but seeing how he had talked with her, she knew this was more than just jealousy.
She slowly walked behind. Her nose scrunched up from the smell and dried dust in the air. Her brows furrowed when she heard a cracking sound.
She looked down, and the blood drained from her face. Beneath her were bones of humans. She closed her eyes, pushing down the bile rising in her throat.
"Everyone listen up," Alexa’s voice echoed through the air. "The location of the survivors is down to the north. We’ll divide into two groups when we make it out from the bridge," she added.
Olivia had a strange sense of foreboding that things weren’t as they seemed, but she couldn’t quite put her fingers around it.
"Feeling scared?" Tyler’s voice echoed from behind her.
Olivia turned momentarily towards him, before returning her gaze forward. She walked carefully, avoiding stepping on people’s bones. She could see some bones in the car seat, and it looked like they had died from suffocation or starvation.
She shook her head. "I can’t say no, because I can feel that hell will soon break loose. I just don’t understand why we were given this mission. It’s so weird."
"What do you mean?"
"Think about it. If the ruin is very dangerous and the apocalypse happened thirty years ago, how could there be any survivors remaining here? If there were any survivors, wouldn’t they have already found a safe place like us?" she replied, rubbing her nose. There was this stench that kept invading her nose. She couldn’t explain what it was, but it didn’t sit well with her.
"That makes sense, Olivia. Why would any survivors remain here?" Tyler’s brows knitted in worry. "Do you think the intel was wrong?"
"I don’t know, Tyler." She shook her head. "What if it’s not a wrong intel? What if we were lied to? Maybe we are here for something else," she muttered as realization dawned on her.
"We should pray we are here for the survivors. If we are not, it will be very difficult for us to leave this place in one piece," Diana chipped in, walking behind Tyler.
Meanwhile, Lucian, who had been walking in front of Olivia, could hear their conversation, thanks to his well-developed hearing. Lately, he had been feeling very weird, as if something was about to happen. And the other side of him had been wanting to dominate him. That’s why he needed to stay away from Olivia.
He didn’t want her to get hurt by him again. He needed to find a way to gain full control of his body before he could be free around Olivia.
His eyes flickered underneath the bridge, deep into the water. The water looked strange, it was mucky and black. It was very still. He sighed, glancing at the road ahead.
The moment he averted his gaze, something moved beneath the still water.
