Chapter 127: Chapter 126 War is Coming
Olivia wiped the sweat off her forehead, her breathing steady but strained. Her body still ached from absorbing the core two days ago, but at least she could move properly now. No more limping, no more struggling to lift a blade.
Stefan’s voice boomed across the training field. "Pair up! I want to see how far you’ve come."
Without needing any instruction, Lucian stood beside her. Olivia gave him a brief nod. She had gotten used to his presence by now. Maybe even... relied on it, though she refused to admit it.
As she tightened the bandages around her wrist, a shadow loomed in front of her.
It was Freya.
The sight of her twin made Olivia’s stomach twist painfully. The last time they had been this close, Freya had pushed her toward the Wailroot monster, almost getting her killed, even after she had saved her life.
Freya wore her usual smirk, her blue eyes gleaming with mockery. "Still hanging around, loser?"
Olivia’s blood boiled. She took a step forward, fists clenching tightly. "Coming from the coward who pushed me into a monster’s claws?"
The smirk on Freya’s face twitched. "I did what I had to do to survive."
"You betrayed me!" Olivia hissed, her voice low but burning with rage. "You didn’t just run, you pushed me to die!" She didn’t know why she was getting so angry, she had already cut ties with them, however the pain was still fresh whenever she thought about what they did.
Around them, a few heads turned to watch.
Freya shrugged carelessly. "Maybe if you weren’t so weak, you would’ve survived on your own."
Olivia’s heart pounded. Every word was like twisting a knife in her chest. She wanted to lunge at her, but Lucian’s steady hand on her arm stopped her.
Freya leaned closer, whispering cruelly, "Luke died because of you too."
Olivia stiffened. The words cut deeper than any blade.
But instead of losing control, she straightened her back and stared her twin down. "You’ll get what you deserve. I promise you that."
Without waiting for an answer, Olivia turned sharply, walking away, ignoring the burn in her chest. This revenge, she was going to save on a golden plate.
Lucian followed quietly beside her. "You don’t have to waste your breath on her," he said calmly.
"I know," Olivia muttered, but the pain still lingered.
.....
Later, during the drills, Olivia paired up with Lucian.
As they practiced, she noticed Diana training a little distance away, stiff and nervous. Her eyes kept flickering toward Lucian, filled with unease.
She wanted to scoff at her so badly, why did she try to kill him when she knew she couldn’t look him in the eyes.
She turned her gaze towards Lucian, who seemed unaware of it. Or maybe, he was just pretending not to notice. After all, he hadn’t been himself during the incident with Diana. She still wondered, what could have changed his personality so drastically. And he wasn’t ready to tell her.
Lucian only knew pieces of what happened from what others told him. Still, something in Diana’s fearful glances made Olivia uneasy.
Lucian caught her staring and gave a small shrug. "I heard she’s scared of me now," he said casually, as if it didn’t bother him. "But I don’t really remember why."
Olivia didn’t push further. But her knitted brows were a complete opposition to her thoughts.
Furthermore, the training didn’t get any easier for Olivia. And Henrik and Bella made sure of that.
Whenever Olivia tried to focus, Henrik would shove past her during drills, and Bella’s voice would ring out with sharp, cutting words.
"You don’t belong here."
"Luke trusted the wrong person."
Their words pierced her like poison darts.
When Lucian noticed, without a word, he stepped in front of Olivia during one of the drills, blocking Henrik’s path with his blade.
Henrik scowled but backed off.
Lucian’s gaze flickered with warning. "Ignore them," he said quietly to Olivia. "They want you to fall apart."
Olivia clenched her jaw, nodding. She wouldn’t give them the satisfaction. But deep there was a burden of guilt that was weighing down her shoulders.
Even when she thought about it, she couldn’t really forgive herself for what happened, nor did she expect them to forgive her.
They continued training together, and little by little, Olivia found herself relaxing in Lucian’s presence. His steady moves, his patient corrections, even his teasing smirks — it all helped her feel less alone.
After the training session, Stefan called them all together.
Olivia stood with Lucian at her side, facing the others: Tyler, Freya, Liam, Ellie, Henrik, Bella, Klaus — all gathered under the gray sky.
"You thought you were special?" Stefan said, a grim smile on his lips. "You’re not. You’re just the first batch."
The group exchanged glances.
Stefan continued, "You’ve been chosen because you have potential. But potential is useless without the will to survive."
He swept his gaze across them, stopping briefly on Olivia.
"What’s coming will tear this fortress apart if you’re not ready."
"What’s coming?" Liam asked, his voice serious.
Stefan’s face hardened. "War."
Silence covered the atmosphere like a thick blanket.
Olivia tightened her fists. What did he mean by "war?" Is the fortress not safe anymore? What was coming exactly?
Stefan’s gaze sharpened. "If you think the monsters outside are bad, wait until you meet the monsters within. Not to add to the fact that the monsters are heading towards our fortress, whatever that is making them migrate, or be it an attack, is not something I believe we can handle if we are not strictly prepared."
His words brought cold chills down Olivia’s spine.
Stefan clapped his hands once. "Training starts tomorrow at dawn. Those who fall behind will be left behind."
His actions were so quick, giving less time for them to process what he had said.
Slowly, they all began to disperse in confusion. Diana glanced one last time at Lucian and Olivia, she believes they are the cause for the approaching disaster. Her knuckles turned white, she must find a way to kill one of them.
