Chapter 52: Bring back a livable world

Seeing the streets ruined with scattered debris and tree branches, Elena did not falter; she remained as calm as if this situation were perfectly normal.

She had witnessed far worse than this.

This disaster couldn’t even compare to the near-ruined future she had faced before.

As they walked, the surroundings were filled with the sounds of people shouting for help—some cries were desperate, others angry, and many blamed the government for not responding immediately.

What puzzled Elena was that people were already looting a damaged store even before the apocalypse had begun.

"These people are so bold," Elena remarked, shaking her head in disbelief.

"The police are overwhelmed by this sudden chaos," Ethan replied steadily.

"This is a national disaster, and so many people need help. This robber probably knows that and is simply disregarding the law."

After a few more steps, they spotted a group of people gathered around a building, shouting about someone buried alive.

"Help! Help! Someone... someone is buried here!" a voice cried out.

"What are you waiting for? Call the rescuers! We can’t rush into that building; it might collapse if we try to remove some of the debris!" another shouted.

On the other side, a man was calling for help.

"Help! This man is bleeding! Is there a doctor here?"

A man wearing sunglasses stepped forward. "Move, please! I’m a nurse. Let me assist the patient."

Some good people were willing to help, but Elena couldn’t shake the thought: how long could these people last?

She didn’t want to think negatively, but her past experiences taught her that humans could change instantly.

Only time could tell.

Everyone was busy in the street, waiting for rescuers to arrive. Those brave enough to venture out to save lives were applauded, while others stood by as mere spectators of the disaster.

No rescuers had arrived yet, likely because the roads were impassable or maybe there were too many people needing help.

"Wife, let’s take that path. I think the area over there is clear enough. Be careful; the ceiling on that side looks like it’s about to fall," Ethan warned.

"Husband, you need to be careful too. Don’t focus all your attention on me," Elena replied, concern lacing her voice.

Hearing this, Ethan couldn’t help but smile. "Wife, you’re so good to me."

’This man! Isn’t he easy to please?’

After making a turn, they found a secluded area and summoned a motorcycle. This mode of transportation was easy and safe to maneuver.

They quickly hopped on the motorcycle. Though they couldn’t go fast, it was still better than walking, as they could more easily navigate around the debris.

"Wife, hold tight. The road might be a bit bumpy due to the unevenness," Ethan said, glancing back at her.

"Don’t worry about me. To be honest, I’m a good driver. How about I drive?" Elena suggested playfully.

"I can still manage, wife. I’m quite adept at handling this. It’s been tested and proven, hasn’t it?" he replied, his voice laced with a seductive confidence.

’Why did her husband sound different?’

"Hmph, yeah, you’re so good. Sooo good. Starting tomorrow, you’ll sleep in the guest room," she teased.

"Wife!" Ethan exclaimed, feigning shock.

Elena laughed, enjoying the lighthearted banter amidst the chaos.

"Be good; you’re going in the wrong direction," she said with a playful tone.

Ethan just wanted to ease his wife’s worries by teasing her and acting like a fool. He just wanted to make sure she smiled despite this disaster.

As they drove through the center of the City, the scene was even more grim. Buildings lay in ruins, windows shattered, and storefronts looted.

People wandered the streets, some in shock and others frantically searching for loved ones. Emergency vehicles were scattered about, their sirens wailing in the distance, adding to the overwhelming chaos.

They saw many injured people going to the medical tent, where volunteers were tending to them.

After a few hours, they finally left City D and drove along the damaged road.

"Wife, in your dreams, did all of this chaos end?" Ethan asked suddenly.

Elena was taken aback by the question. "I don’t know, husband. I just had a flash in my dream, and it has stopped for a while now."

’Yes, the apocalypse had ended, but human had lost their home and identity. They had become half-breed aliens.’

Ethan sensed that Elena was hiding something.

"Wife, tell me honestly, why do the Heathers and the military want that woman so badly?"

Is he still not done with this?

"In my dreams, the aliens requested the Heather family to capture that woman. I don’t know their reasons, but the Heathers accepted it and commissioned the military to hunt her down," Elena explained calmly.

"But why would the aliens want her?" Ethan snapped, stopping the motorcycle.

He demanded the truth.

"We need to talk."

Elena was stunned by his sudden seriousness.

She knew lying wasn’t right, but if he really knew the truth, he would blame himself just like he had when his family died one after another, driving himself to madness.

Oh, goodness. Please don’t ask more. I’m begging you.

"I don’t know, okay!" she finally exclaimed.

Elena jumped off the motorcycle to cool down, the tension palpable between them.

Ethan had been thinking about this for a while, ever since in Willow Village.

’Why did the aliens want his wife so badly?’

"Wife, please tell me. I’m begging you," he said, his tone pleading.

Elena finally surrendered.

"They want her ability."

In the past, the aliens sought her because of her time ability. In a perfected state, her ability could reverse time and restore things to how they once were.

She was the key.

They wanted Elena to return their ruined world to a livable state.

But at the cost of her body and soul, she would no longer exist in this world—a fair trade according to Heaven. That’s why, when Ethan learned about this in the past, he created a base to resist the aliens and the military, but in the end, they were betrayed by their trusted comrades.

Ethan felt his heart sink. He comforted her, showering her with affectionate kisses.

"Wife, what’s that woman’s ability?"

This information he should never know. If he learned that she could manipulate time, he would likely conclude that she had been reborn using her ability.

Even though the ancient space was responsible for that, he would still think she was reborn, leading to more questions and self-blame for how they died tragically.

’He would find out when the awakening happened, but not now. This would be enough to deter his curiosity.’

"I don’t know, but they are determined to get her no matter what," she replied.

Ethan didn’t press further. The fact that the aliens wanted her and that the Heathers had done something unforgivable was enough to identify his enemies. He needed to focus on that.
