Chapter 233: Dealing with the rest

Ethan furrowed his brows, thinking of ways to eliminate the remaining henchmen and hidden guards.

But when the swarm of mutated pests rushed toward them, he felt conflicted.

He was relieved that the pests might wipe out his enemies—but at the same time, he felt a little sad for the police officers on the front lines, caught in the chaos.

Even though he was no longer the chief of police, he still hoped they could survive the onslaught of the mutated pests.

Now that it had already breached the camp, it meant the defense had failed.

The real question now was: where were the officers? Had they been killed, or had they escaped and gone into hiding?

He sighed and refocused on the remaining enemies before contacting Elena about the situation.

When Elena heard the news, she quickly placed the mad scientist in the Southeast Training Ground’s interrogation room to deal with him later and left to assess what was happening outside.

She then reappeared behind Ethan, who had retreated to a safer spot away from the swarming mutated pests, and together, they began to discuss the situation.

Ethan looked at his wife, clearly exhausted from using her ability. If only he were stronger, she wouldn’t be in this situation.

He silently blamed himself, but forced those thoughts away—self-pity wouldn’t help now.

"With the pests around, it’s safe to say Troy’s henchmen are at a disadvantage. Last I saw them, they were scrambling to escape the area."

"We can’t let them get away," Elena said firmly. "This is a good opportunity—we can use the mutated pests as cover."

She was determined to eliminate this threat now, rather than deal with it later like a ticking time bomb.

"Alright, I heard your command," he said, then leaned in and kissed her cheek.

Yes, he was a total sucker when it came to his wife.

If that’s what she wanted, then he would support her all the way—instead of wasting time worrying.

They soon began their second round of hunting, and this time with Troy Heather as their main target.

Ethan stayed back, using his sniper to pick off enemies from a distance, while Elena remained hidden, striking whenever the moment was right.

She observed closely as the remaining henchmen struggled to defend themselves, cursing the government officials for allowing things to spiral out of control.

With the overwhelming swarm of mutated pests—and the terrifying presence of the two Paradise staff members taking them down one by one—the situation only grew worse.

On the other hand, the moment Elena took Dr. Cee, the henchmen panicked and quickly hid Troy, afraid he would be the next target.

He was a secret guard, assigned by Jack Heather to protect both his grandson and granddaughter.

After witnessing what had just happened, a strong sense of urgency gripped him—they needed to leave before it was too late.

It now made sense why the Paradise Shop was so shrouded in mystery—they were far more dangerous than anyone had imagined.

"Boss, it looks like the officers failed to defend the camp. With Dr. Cee gone, the officials are in chaos. We should leave now. I have a bad feeling with those two staff members still out there."

"Tsk. It’s really annoying, seeing people with abilities like that," Troy muttered.

"My grandfather once told me that the world we live in now isn’t the same as before. But watching those two openly use their abilities... it really changes how I view things."

"Boss, if your grandfather had abilities, isn’t it normal for others to have them too?"

Troy shot him a sharp glare.

"You’re right, it’s not strange to have abilities. What’s strange is having them so early. Why am I even explaining this to you? Just get ready—we’re leaving. I need to send a full report to my grandfather."

Though confused, the henchman nodded, sensing his master’s growing irritation.

According to his grandfather, the awakening of abilities was supposed to happen during the third to fourth year of the disaster.

So, for it to happen now changed everything.

Indeed. The events were meant to follow a proper timeline, with the awakening coming much later.

But when Elena returned from the past, the course of events sped up. That’s why Heaven grew furious—trying to erase these abnormal variables.

"Boss, let’s leave now. There’s a path on the side—we can use it to slip out unnoticed."

"Alright, lead the way."

"What about your men?"

Troy raised a brow. "Let them buy us time. It’d be a waste not to use them."

The henchman chuckled. He could see the Heather blood in Troy—ruthless to his men, living up to the name.

Soon after, they moved out quietly, ignoring the screams and pleas of his men and the group of scientists.

Meanwhile, Elena was hiding in an elevated area, trying to spot Troy among the people scrambling for safety, when suddenly—a bullet flew toward her once again.

The hidden guards weren’t done yet, likely furious that the man they were meant to protect, Dr. Cee, had already been taken.

Of course, Ethan fired back in retaliation, making sure the enemy was taken down—so his wife wouldn’t have to worry and could focus on locating Troy.

Bang!

Another sniper dropped.

He was about to shift his focus back to the battlefield when he suddenly spotted two figures moving stealthily in a secluded area, sneaking away from the chaos.

It looked like they were trying to escape, so he raised his sniper and took a shot.

Bang!

But the bullet missed its mark, alerting the two individuals instead.

Confused, he wondered how his shot had failed—it hadn’t even come close.

Refusing to believe his aim was off, he fired again.

Bang!

Another miss.

Now certain something was wrong, he picked up his binoculars to get a better look at who they were.

To his shock, he realized one of them was Troy. He quickly contacted his wife to tell her what he’d seen.

Soon after, Elena appeared behind him and looked at the two figures, who were now hiding after being targeted.

Without delay, she used [Blink] to reappear close to them.

She smirked and aimed at the other henchman, but before she could pull the trigger, he was already alert—and fired first.

Bang!

The henchman sneered. Though impressed by their abilities, he had been thoroughly trained by the Heather family to handle the unknown.

"Surprised? Then die!" he laughed.

Elena was caught off guard by how quickly he responded and fired.

She then used [Blink] just before the bullet could reach her, repositioning herself and preparing to shoot again.

"You talk too much," she retorted, but the henchman remained on high alert.

Suddenly, the ground trembled—ice and snow cracked from afar and began breaking loose from the elevated terrain.

With a deafening roar, an avalanche surged forward, swallowing everything in its path.

Panic spread instantly and Elena, too, was stunned by the sudden chaos.

’What could have triggered this?’

With no other choice, she used her remaining energy for one final strike before the avalanche arrived.

She had to make sure they were at least injured, if not dead.

She then activated [Spatial Slash], pouring all her remaining spiritual energy from her space core into the attack.

A wave of spatial energy sliced through the air.

Troy, sensing danger, quickly ducked—he felt that standing still would mean certain death.

He could tell that the staff member was now serious about killing him and was using some kind of ability to do it.

After using her ability, Elena panted heavily, watching with a flicker of satisfaction—until, suddenly, a massive shard of ice flew toward Troy and the henchman, shielding them at the last second.

Her attack collided with the ice, causing a violent explosion that sent sharp shards flying in all directions.

Elena’s frustration deepened. Victory was already on her grasp.

’What the heck just happened?’

She couldn’t go on anymore—her ability was already drained. And with Ethan urging her to enter the space now, she had no choice but to listen.

Glancing between the incoming avalanche and the spot where Troy was hidden, she clenched her fists.

Surely, this force would kill them... right?

Still, she couldn’t shake the feeling—that the heavens kept interfering, making her every effort feel meaningless.

Her thoughts were interrupted by Ethan’s voice echoing in her mind again, urging her to quickly enter the space, as the avalanche was already closing in.

She quickly agreed, then cast one last cold glance at Troy and the henchman before vanishing into the space.

Inside, Ethan quickly handed her a cup of well water to help ease the fatigue from using her space ability.

Elena smiled faintly, but soon a wave of frustration washed over her.

"What a shame the avalanche ruined our chance."

"I think they’re completely buried now, so there’s no need to be disappointed," Ethan said gently, then helped her remove the extreme cold suit so she could relax.

"By the way, what are you planning to do with that mad scientist?"

"Just dispose of him," Elena replied calmly.

Aside from his recent crazy plan to harvest their blood and flesh, she didn’t hold a personal grudge against the mad scientist.

But for the sake of City A’s future, people like him needed to be wiped out—so she left it to her husband.

"Alright, I’ll take care of it. You should rest first; I know you’re exhausted," Ethan said with concern.

"No, we need to prepare. The building might already be crawling with mutated pests."

"Wife, let them handle it. This is a good test for them—we can’t protect them forever. And I think you’re forgetting something... you’re pregnant."

Elena finally gave in and agreed to rest for a while, reminding Ethan to wake her if anything serious happened.

He nodded and promised he would.

Then, after she fell asleep, he quietly got up and went to Grandpa Caldwell’s location to check on the situation.
