Chapter 33: Saving an old friend.

After all that stocking, it was time to save some old friends. Sunshine had called Nimo and told her to take a leave from the military base. Her friend had done as she said and she was back in the city already, at her family’s home.

As soon as she walked into the gate of the medium family sized home, a delicious smell of food wafted through the air, coming from the open kitchen window.

"Smells delicious." Sunshine stomach rumbled in anticipation at the lost taste of the memory of Maya Fawk’s sea food boil. No one did it better than her best friend’s mother.

It had been so long since she last had it. Two months in the current timeline but if she counted the apocalypse years, it had been four years and eleven months.

She was intimately familiar with the house, so she made her way to the backyard, no sooner had she come into sight when little children run up to her. Luckily, she was ready, armed with a packet of lollipops.

"Auntie Suni! hug, I want a hug. Candy_candy_candy!" They squealed with excitement as they grabbed a candy each.

When the kids left after robbing her clean of all the lollipops, she made her way into the house and met the adults. Nimo’s family was a close-knit family, parents, grandparents and two of her uncles and their wives and children also lived there.

This was because most of them were currently serving as soldiers or they had done so at one point. Whenever they were on active duty, they would leave the children with their parents.

In the end, the three brothers pulled together money, bought one house and moved in together. So far, the arrangement was working out nicely. Nevertheless, the house was a little overcrowded sometimes.

Sunshine greeted all the adults first and then made her way to the living room where her friend was sitting on the couch, wrapped in blanket, eating nuts and watching an action movie in which guns were being fired rapidly and loudly. Like she did not get enough of the shooting in the army!!

She was about to out her hands around Nimo’s eyes when she felt tugging on her jeans. When she looked down, her eyes met those of Nimo’s youngest niece, two and half year old Cyra. She had not received her mandated lollipop, and she had come to demand for it with wide eyes and pouted lips.

Sunshine had one more in the bag and she gave it up. When she turned around, Nimo had disappeared from the couch.

Her eyes were blinded by fingers, and she felt someone standing behind her. Her first instinct was to reach for her weapon. But Nimo’s familiar scent overpowered the fight mode in Sunshine.

"Guess who?" Nimo teased.

It was a silly game they liked to play, and it made no sense as they both always knew who the other was. Nevertheless, they did it anyway. Sunshine recalled the day she found Nimo’s head without the eyes. Her heart clenched.

She swatted Nimo’s fingers away, turned around and embraced her. She squeezed her friend, holding on to her as if for dear life.

"You are going to squeeze the life out of me." Nimo tapped her friend’s shoulder, but the hug only got tighter.

"A little more, just let me hug you some more. I have missed you, my friend. You have no idea how hard it was without you." Sunshine said through tears, her body shook with heaving, uncontrollable cries.

For the first time since her rebirth, she failed to control her emotions.

Nimo leaned in tentatively, arms tightening. She was very worried about her friend. "Suni, it has only been a week since we last saw each other. What the hell is going on? Is this about your secret marriage?" Her voice dripped with concern; she had never seen her friend crack this much.

Not even when Camilla Moore and her bully friends poured a bucket of urine on her head when they were in eleventh grade. Sunshine faced the bullies and broke them one by one, so whatever was making her cry so uncontrollably had to be great.

The crying was great that it puzzled the rest of the family as they came into the house for lunch. All eyes were on the two friends. They considered Sunshine family, and they were worried about her.

Like the rest of the world, they had been surprised to wake up to news of her married to a billionaire that was reportedly going bankrupt. As curious as they were about it, they would not force her to talk about it.

Maya Fawkes cleared her throat and made eyes at her daughter.

"Nothing to see here folks, just keep moving and go on to enjoy your food." Nimo waved them away. "It’s boy problems." She lied easily as she whisked Sunshine out of there.

Her answer left them gossiping, was Sunshine already having marital issues? Was it about the bankruptcy or the sudden marriage.

"She is not pregnant, is she?" Maya mumbled.

The two young women got into Sunshine’s car and drove off to Sunshine’s warehouse. The ride was a long and quiet one at least until they arrived there.

"Wait I knew this place seemed familiar, isn’t this that car factory which you almost dumped all your savings into? I told you then and I will tell you now, it is not a great idea to invest in cars unless you have a carload of money. Why are we here Suni?" Nimo asked, her eyes instinctively searched the empty area.

Sunshine only smiled through her red eyes and opened the warehouse house.

"What is all this? Why is there so much canned food and rice?" Nimo asked, almost gagging on seeing canned tuna, she had eaten enough of that in the military camps.

If she ate tinned fish again, death could just come for her.

"Have you seen Moon’s interview?" Sunshine asked her.

"Your cousin Moon? Is she the one that stocked up on all this stuff or is it you?" Nimo let out a derisive snort and rolled her eyes. "Oh, come on do not tell me that she is really believing this apocalypse gospel that she is spreading?

And the so-called prophetic dream which she claims to have had. What the hell is that? She is even worse than Pastor Salem and he is the biggest cult leader in this country.

Moon has become the biggest joke in the military with people calling her all sorts of names. I felt secondhand embarrassment because I know her personally. You need to get her institutionalized immediately." Nimo sat on a sack of rice.

A soft sigh came Sunshine, wondering how or where to even begin explaining all she knew about the apocalypse to her stubborn friend. All she knew was that she needed to save her friend, even if it meant abducting her and having her flown to Westbrook.
