Chapter 96: Chapter 96: The Black Widow’s Wrath (02)

Zhou Yinuo and Liang Zihan remained behind, slumped against the wall. Liora knelt and gently lifted the child from her carry bag. She placed him next to Zhou Yinuo, who immediately adjusted her position to cradle him.

"I’ll protect him," Zhou Yinuo whispered, her voice low but firm.

Liora nodded. "Don’t move unless you must. Absorb the crystals. Recover. We’ll handle this."

Zhou Yinuo clutched one of the glowing crystals tightly, her fingers trembling slightly. "Be safe."

She nodded without answering and turned away. She had already placed a pile of crystals beside them—most of what they had harvested from the earlier zombies. Zhou Yinuo and Liang Zihan had handed her their share earlier to keep it in her space, because it was practically impossible to carry so many crystals with them.

They carried only a few crystals with them for emergency, and all of them were given to Liora to store, just like Ji Ming’s group had done it.

The air was filled with suffocating silence as Liora stepped forward, her footsteps steady. Behind her, Shen Haoran, Zhao Ren, and Ji Ming walked in silence, their eyes fixed on the massive creature ahead.

Chen Wei, Yan Lin, and Yan Shou walked from different sides. The giant black widow spider loomed at the shattered gate, its long legs twitching with anticipation. Its eight eyes glowed red, locking onto them like prey.

As they advanced, the black widow spider let out another bone-piercing screech. Then, without warning, it reared up and spat out.

A stream of dark green venom shot across the hall like a whip.

"MOVE!" Shen Haoran shouted as soon as he saw the spider’s move.

All of them dove in different directions just in time.

The venom struck the ground where they had stood only seconds before. It sizzled violently, burning through the tiles and furniture with a hissing sound. The floor melted into blackened puddles. The wooden table burst into flames for a second before being reduced to a sticky sludge.

Their expressions darkened. That venom wasn’t just poison, it was acid. If it touched them, it would not just burn skin. It would destroy them till not even their bones were left.

Liora’s face turned pale for a second as she realized—if she had brought the child with her, one wrong move would have ended him.

"Don’t let it hit you," Zhou Ren muttered. "We won’t survive a direct hit."

Ji Ming gritted his teeth and raised his blade. "Then don’t give it the chance."

The black widow spider hissed and lunged forward. Despite its massive size, it was fast, far faster than it should’ve been. One of its sharp legs came crashing down toward Ji Ming. He barely managed to dodge, but the wind from the strike cut his cheek open.

Blood ran down the side of his face.

"Damn thing’s faster than it looks!" he shouted.

Liora lunged from the side, her mana sword glowing faintly. She slashed at one of the spider’s rear legs. The blade struck, but only left a shallow mark.

The spider spun around with shocking speed and sent one of its legs swinging at her like a club. She crossed her arms and blocked it with her sword, but the force threw her back several feet. She hit the wall with a grunt, and the air was knocked out of her lungs.

Shen Haoran jumped in next. He shot up with a glowing fire sword in his hand that slashed at the creature’s eyes. It only flinched, but then countered with another stream of venom.

He twisted midair, dodging narrowly the venom, but some of the acid caught his arm. He screamed as the venom fell on his skin.

Smoke rose from his sleeve as the cloth disintegrated and his skin blistered beneath it. He hit the ground hard and rolled, clutching his arm.

"Shen Haoran!" Liora called out.

"I’m fine!" he hissed. "Don’t stop!"

Zhou Ren dashed in from the other side. His spear glowed and stabbed forward with blinding speed, striking at the spider’s glowing red hourglass. But the spear bounced off like it had hit solid iron.

"What the hell is this thing made of?" he growled, leaping back as the spider swiped at him.

The spider screeched and slammed two legs down in quick succession. One struck near Ji Ming’s foot, cutting a deep gash into the floor. The second landed right on Zhou Ren’s shoulder as he failed to dodge in time.

Crack!

He let out a guttural yell as the limb crushed him into the floor. Blood splattered.

"Zhou Ren!" Liora’s eyes widened. She sprinted forward, dodging falling debris and acid droplets.

With a shout, she summoned her strength and swung her blade at the leg pinning him down.

Clang!

The blow bounced back, but she swung again. And again. Until finally, with a loud crack, the leg pulled back.

Zhou Ren rolled over, coughing blood. "Still... alive," he muttered with a shaky smile.

"Not for long if we don’t end this," Ji Ming said through clenched teeth. His side was bleeding, his clothes torn from another blow.

They were all injured now. Even Chen Wei’s group was not doing much better, all of them knocked out in single blows from the black widow spider.

Liora’s arms ached. Her breath came in ragged gasps. Her side was bleeding from when she had slammed into the wall. Shen Haoran’s left arm was half-useless. Zhou Ren could barely stand straight. Ji Ming was limping, his movements slower than before.

And the spider? It was barely scratched.

The massive black widow screeched again, its eyes glowing brighter. Its body pulsed like something alive and angry. The air around it turned thick, almost heavy. The venom dripped from its fangs like drool, burning little holes in the floor beneath.

Liora stared at the creature and clenched her jaw.

They were losing. But they were still standing. And as long as they could still move, they would keep fighting.

She raised her sword again. "Don’t hold back," she said hoarsely. "Aim for the joints. The underbelly. We’re going to bring it down."

The others nodded, bloodied but unbroken. And once again, they charged towards the spider.

But just as they all attacked it again, the little boy who had been asleep for many days suddenly opened his eyes. His blue irises were filled with calmness and a strange light as he found himself staring at the black widow spider.

His gaze locked instantly with the spider’s, and in no time, the black widow spider screamed in agony and thrashed everywhere.
