Chapter 68: The Boy with Blue Eyes
Chapter 68: Chapter 68: The Boy with Blue Eyes
Liora hurriedly took out her Hummer from the space and placed it at a distance from the burned car. It wasn’t too far, just enough to make it seem like it had belonged to the family. She made sure it was parked in a way that didn’t look suspicious. It needed to look like it had been there all along.
She rubbed some dirt on the shiny surface. Under the bright sunlight, the vehicle looked new. Only now she noticed it was still smeared with blood from a previous zombie fight. She hadn’t seen it clearly at night, but now the dried stains looked obvious and messy. She made a note in her heart to clean it properly later. But for now, this worked better. It helped her sell the story.
After double-checking everything, she turned back to where she had come from.
She ran fast. It did not take much time to find them as they hadn’t gone that far. She reached the trio who were still searching the area nearby. She waved her hand and called them over with urgency. "I found one!" she said, panting. "There’s a vehicle, and it seems to be perfectly fine and working too."
The moment those words left her mouth, the tired faces of the three instantly lit up.
Chen Wei let out a smile, his shoulders relaxing at the thought of travelling in the vehicle. "That’s amazing!" Now they don’t have to walk on their legs anymore. At first, he doubted that they would encounter any vehicle because more people are faster than them. But Liora’s words made him happy that maybe their luck this time is not that bad at all.
Liang Zihan’s eyes widened. "Seriously? Thank God! I was beginning to think we’d have to walk to the next city!"
Zhou Yinuo didn’t say anything at first, but her expression softened. A small smile touched her lips. She clapped Liora gently on the shoulder and said, "Good job."
They were so caught up in the joy of finally having a working vehicle that none of them noticed the sadness in Liora’s voice. She had spoken with a heavy tone, but their minds were already racing with thoughts of safety and convenience. Hope had returned to their faces, even if only for a moment.
Liora forced a small smile and nodded. She did not say anything else and simply turned to lead the way.
The three followed her quickly, but their expressions changed the moment they saw the tragedy.
Even though they had all seen death many times before, this one still made their hearts heavy. No one could speak for a while. The little girl with her eyes still open, the mother clutching her hand, the blood stains, the destroyed zombies—it was hard to look at.
But then they noticed the Hummer.
"It looks usable," Chen Wei said quietly, inspecting the vehicle. "Still in good condition and definitely it’s a military vehicle. Maybe the people who died are somewhat related to the military."
Liang Zihan nodded, his eyes still glued to their dead bodies. "They must’ve died not long ago..."
Zhou Yinuo turned to Liora. "How did you find this?"
Liora gave the lie she had prepared. "I saw the smoke and came running. Found this car parked nearby. The keys were still inside. I think they planned to leave but got attacked before they could."
No one questioned it. No one had the strength to argue. After all, this scene in the apocalypse is not new to them. Most of the people had perished this way, all trying to run away from their fate but eventually got crushed under it.
They silently placed their luggage inside the vehicle. But even then, Liora couldn’t take her eyes off the bodies. Her feet refused to move. Something felt wrong if they just left like this.
With a heavy sigh, she walked back toward them. She lowered her head in front of the family. Then she bowed. Her knees touched the ground as she kowtowed. "I hope you get a good life next time," she whispered, her voice soft and full of guilt. "We’ll bury you. That’s the least we can do."
The others watched quietly. None of them said anything. But their hearts agreed. They couldn’t just take the car and walk away like nothing happened. They could not be that selfish. After all, they are taking what belongs to them. It’s a kind of help from them so in return they should also help them.
So they got to work. They found a good spot beside the highway and began digging a large pit.
Soon the trio lifted each body and started laying it inside the pit.
Liora moved slowly, her hands shaking. When she bent down to lift the mother’s body, something pressed against her arm. It was soft... warm. "What is this?" Liora thought in confusion, even though her mind was racing she could not point out what exactly the soft thing was.
Then when she looked carefully, there was a nestled boy tightly in the woman’s arms.
He looked about four, maybe five. His face was pale, his lips slightly blue. But the shocking thing was, he was actually breathing.
Liora stared at the boy, her mind frozen with the shock. Her fingers trembled as she gently touched his cheek. Suddenly, the boy stirred. His tiny fingers twitched. Then he opened his eyes.
Wide, blue eyes.
It was bright and beautiful, staring up at her.
Liora’s heart skipped a beat. Her whole body went cold. She almost dropped him out of shock. "He’s alive..." she whispered, barely believing it.
The boy blinked slowly. His lips moved, but no sound came out.
Liora pulled him close to her chest without thinking. Her arms tightened around him. Her throat felt like it was closing. She didn’t know why. But something about this boy made her heart ache.
Tears welled up in her eyes.
"Don’t worry," she whispered to him. "You’re safe now."
She didn’t know who he was. She didn’t know if he would live past today. But in that moment, holding him in her arms, Liora knew one thing for sure.
She had to protect him.
No matter what.
Why did she suddenly feel the strange emotion welling inside her, like the boy was someone important to her, like they have a relation which she was not aware of. And his blue eyes. Yeah, his blue eyes. Because of it, Liora felt a strange connection to him.
She felt like she had seen these blue eyes somewhere, who was very close with her. But she could not remember just who. However she tries to think, she could not remember.
But even if she couldn’t remember, she knew one thing, she wasn’t going to leave him here alone. Whether he was truly connected to her or just a stranger, it didn’t matter.
Without hesitation, she purchased a level 1 healing potion from the system for 50 Survival Points. Holding the boy gently in her arms, she helped him drink it slowly. He drank eagerly, not pausing even for a second, like he hadn’t eaten or drunk anything in days.
Watching him like that made Liora’s heart ache with pain.
