Apocalypse: Transmigrated with an Overlord System -
Chapter 67 : The Road Ahead
Chapter 67: Chapter 67 : The Road Ahead
The next morning, the group stood at the edge of the base, ready to leave. Each person carried a small bag on their back, packed tightly with food and supplies. No one knew when they would return, or if they even would.
They had taken everything important with them. Leaving anything behind felt risky. After all, there was no guarantee their belongings would still be there when they got back.
If someone broke in and stole everything, they could only regret it later. In these times, even your neighbors couldn’t be trusted.
Before the apocalypse, theft was something people feared but had protection against: locks, cameras, alarms. But now, all of them were gone.
The entire system of security had collapsed. There were no guards patrolling the streets, no police left to call for help. Now, people had to rely on themselves to keep their belongings safe.
Once you left your home, there was no way to protect what you left behind. There were no CCTV cameras to catch the thief, no system in place to track down stolen goods. If someone took your things, they were simply gone. You wouldn’t even know who to blame.
With these thoughts, they packed everything aside from furniture, leaving the apartment empty.
Soon, they reached the gate. After showing their mission papers to the guards stationed there, the gate opened with a loud creak. Without another word, they stepped out into the ruined world beyond—the real world.
The road ahead was quiet, with only the distant sound of some zombies. They walked quite a distance, occasionally coming across a stray zombie or two.
They killed them quickly and moved on. The area near the base had been cleared out several times before, so they didn’t encounter large groups.
But even without fighting, the journey was tiring. The sun was already rising, and the heat began to press down on them. Their bags felt heavier with every step.
Sweat soaked through their clothes, and their shoulders started aching from the weight. After an hour of walking, they had barely covered any distance.
"This isn’t going to work," Liora thought, glancing at the others. Everyone looked exhausted. If they kept going like this, they would waste an entire day without getting far. And in the apocalypse, time wasn’t something they could afford to waste.
She stopped and raised her voice so everyone could hear. "Let’s find a vehicle. Maybe someone died and their car is still working. We can’t keep walking like this."
The others paused, considering her words. After a moment, they all nodded in agreement. It was a smart idea. Abandoned vehicles were not rare. People were still dying every day, and many didn’t make it far before being ambushed by zombies.
"Let’s split up," Liora said. "Check every direction. Search nearby roads or highways. Look for any sign of a usable car."
She assigned directions quickly. Chen Wei headed west while she went east. Liang Zihan and Zhou Yinuo went north together.
But deep down, Liora wasn’t actually hoping to find a vehicle.
Because she already had one.
Inside her space was a sleek, brand-new Hummer, shiny and in perfect condition. But she couldn’t just pull it out in front of everyone. That would raise too many questions. How did she get it? Where had it been all this time? Why was it untouched?
So she had come up with this little plan.
If she could find a place where a group of people had clearly died—maybe in an ambush—then she could bring out the Hummer and say she found it there. A car with no surviving owners. A believable story, right?
She searched road after road, hoping to find the right scene—a place that would match the lie she had prepared.
But nothing looked right. Most abandoned cars were either burned out or stripped clean. Some had already been claimed by others. Liora soon grew frustrated as she did not find the perfect setting for her harmless lie.
Then, just when she was about to give up, she spotted smoke rising in the distance. Her heart skipped a beat with delight.
She sprinted toward it.
As she got closer, the smell of smoke and blood filled the air. Her footsteps slowed. There it was.
An unrecognizable vehicle lay near the edge of a highway, still burning. Flames covered the tires, and smoke billowed into the sky. Around it were bodies littered—at least four men, a woman, and a teenage girl. Blood stained the pavement. Several dead zombies lay scattered nearby, their rotting bodies torn apart from the fight.
The scene was brutal and terrifying. The blood still looked fresh, as if the fight had occurred in the early morning.
It seemed the group had been attacked during the night. They must have fought hard. The way the zombies were positioned made it clear they hadn’t gone down easily. But in the end, it hadn’t been enough.
Liora stood silently there, her earlier joy of encountering the perfect scene soon dying. She felt a lingering fear from inside, looking at the many corpses of zombies and the family.
She didn’t know who these people were, but the tragedy of their deaths weighed on her. They had been trying to survive, just like her.
Was it a crime to live? Didn’t they just want to survive? Then why had everything become so unstable in this world?
Liora had seen countless deaths in her past life, but never this many. She had seen more in this single month after arriving here than ever before.
It would be a lie to say she felt nothing while looking at the dead teenage girl, whose eyes were still open with terror. She must have died a terrifying death—and her mother, who was clutching her hand even after death, lay beside her.
And maybe the man who had desperately tried to reach them, dragging his body toward them, leaving clear marks on the road—perhaps he had still hoped to save them until his last breath.
The other three men—maybe they had died earlier while protecting the mother and her child. Their bodies were so damaged they were no longer recognizable.
Maybe the family had been on their way to a safer place. Maybe they had dreams of building a life beyond the chaos.
But now, they were all gone.
Liora clenched her eyes shut and took a deep breath. The longer she looked at them, the heavier her heart felt. This world had no pity for the weak. It fed on them.
If she didn’t get stronger, her fate might not be any different.
So she hurriedly started doing what she came here for.
