Chapter 58: Chapter 58: Waiting for you

Liora walked through the base’s entrance, her boots scuffing lightly against the ground as she passed the usual security checkpoint.

The guards barely spared her a glance, recognizing her as one of the residents. She nodded at them and moved quickly, eager to get back to the apartment.

As she reached their building, she sighed, expecting to quietly slip inside and collapse onto her bed. But the moment she saw the light still coming from the apartment, she froze.

Frowning, she picked up her pace. The moment she stepped inside, three pairs of eyes snapped toward her. Chen Wei stood with his arms crossed, his brows furrowed in frustration. Liang Zihan was seated on the couch, running a hand through his hair, looking equal parts exhausted and annoyed.

And Zhou Yinuo, usually the calmest among them, had an unmistakable glint of disbelief and guilt in her eyes before she sighed for the umpteenth time.

Liora blinked in surprise. "You guys are still up?"

"You’re back," Zhou Yinuo said, his voice almost choked when she saw her at the door.

Liora blinked, confused by their tense expressions. "Of course, I’m back. Why wouldn’t I be?"

Chen Wei scoffed. "You disappeared without a word, Liora. After everything that happened at the warehouse, we thought—"

"That I left?" she finished for him, realization dawning.

Liang Zihan exhaled sharply. "Yeah. That you decided to ditch us after what happened."

Liora’s gaze softened. She hadn’t meant to make them worry. She had just been too focused on getting things done. "I wasn’t leaving. I just had something important to do. That’s all. I didn’t think you’d all still be awake."

Zhou Yinuo shook his head. "None of us could sleep. We were worried about you."

A guilty pang struck her chest. She hadn’t considered how they might take her sudden disappearance. "I’m sorry," she said, her voice quieter this time. "I really didn’t mean to make you all worry. I was just... handling things. But I’m fine."

Her words must have reassured them because the tension in the room eased. Liang Zihan sighed and sank further into the couch. Chen Wei uncrossed his arms, though he still looked mildly annoyed. But Zhou Yinuo’s lips twitched into a small smile as relief finally washed over her.

She had been following Liora at the time, keeping her in sight even amidst the chaos. But somewhere in that chaotic horde, she lost track of her.

No matter how much she searched, Liora was nowhere to be found. Minutes turned into an hour, and with every passing second, the sinking feeling in her chest deepened. At some point, she almost thought—no, she believed—that Liora must have left.

When Chen Wei and Liang Zihan arrived, she was the one who had to break the news to them. At first, they refused to believe it. Liora wouldn’t leave just like that—would she?

Even if she had decided to go her own way, they would never have stopped her. They just wished they could have at least said a proper goodbye.

So the only thing they could do was wait, but as time passed, night faded into morning, and their hopes slowly withered. Reality sank in—Liora was truly gone.

A loud growl echoed through the room, making Liora freeze, and Zhou Yinuo snapped out of her thoughts. She looked at Liora and found her covering her stomach in embarrassment.

Zhou Yinuo chuckled. "You must be hungry. Let me cook something for everyone. It’s almost breakfast time anyway. Why not just eat early?"

Liora hesitated for a second before nodding. "That... actually sounds perfect."

Liang Zihan rolled his eyes but smirked. "You better not disappear again before breakfast."

Liora grinned. "I won’t. I promise."

The air was filled with the comforting scent of food as Zhou Yinuo placed steaming bowls of porridge on the table. The smell was enough to make everyone’s stomach growl with hunger, even Chen Wei and Liang Zihan were no different. After all, they had not eaten anything since the previous morning.

"You must be starving," she said with a smile, handing Liora a bowl.

Liora’s stomach growled in response, making Zhao Qiyang laugh. "Damn, you really were hungry."

Liora rolled her eyes but took a big spoonful, savoring the warmth. Chen Wei sat quietly, eating at his own pace, while the others chatted lightly. The exhaustion in their bodies eased as they ate a warm and comforting meal. Just how many days had passed since they last had a decent and fulfilling meal?

As far as they could remember, they had only eaten a pack of biscuits for several days or a loaf of bread and had even survived countless days on just water.

But whether they realized it or not, something had definitely changed after Liora’s arrival, and they hoped it was only for the better.

After finishing, Liora leaned back with a content sigh. "Eating a decent meal feels really good. I almost forgot that we are in a post-apocalyptic world."

Zhou Yinuo nodded. "Let’s enjoy the peace while we can."

As soon as they were done, they all lay down for a short nap, letting their tired bodies rest.

Liora woke up after a while, stretching as she sat up. The others were already up and moving around. She got to her feet and headed to the living room, where they were deep in discussion about a new mission.

As she listened, she realized they were seriously considering taking on another job. From their conversation, she also learned that after paying 1,500 EUs for rent and buyin 10 liters of water from a water-type awakener for 300 EUs, they only had 700 EUs left.

Hearing that, Liora couldn’t help but feel strange. Water-type awakeners were really living in luxury. Charging 300 EUs for just 20 liters of water? It was absurd. She still remembered that even a low-tier mission only paid around 500 points.

It made her wonder—how easy life must be for those with such abilities. While others risked their lives on dangerous missions, struggling just to survive, these awakeners sat comfortably in the base, making a fortune simply by selling water and other necessities.

They didn’t have to fight, didn’t have to struggle. They just enjoyed the benefits of their powers while everyone else had to work themselves to the bone just to get by.
