Chapter 54: Chapter 54: Aether Fruit [Bonus Chapter]
On the other side, when Liora was calmly driving toward the base, a raging man walked out of an advanced military vehicle and stormed inside Grandpa Xu’s home.
The door swung open with a sharp creak, and a tall man stepped out, his presence alone enough to send shivers down a weaker man’s spine. Xu Kai didn’t slam the door. He didn’t stomp his way in. He simply walked—each step slow, deliberate, and filled with silent fury.
He entered the house without knocking, his dark eyes like a frozen abyss as they locked onto the old man lounging in the living room.
"You called me back," Xu Kai said, his voice low and cold. "At this time."
It wasn’t a question. It was an accusation.
Grandpa Xu, seated comfortably with a cup of tea in his hands, barely spared him a glance. "Ah, you’re here, brat. Come, sit. I brewed some Longjing tea myself."
Xu Kai didn’t move. His gaze sharpened. "The auction for the Aether Fruit is happening now."
Grandpa Xu hummed, sipping his tea leisurely. "Yes, yes. I know."
Xu Kai remained silent, but the air in the room thickened with tension. His fingers twitched slightly, the only sign of his barely restrained rage. His grandfather had done many reckless things before, but dragging him away at such a crucial time? That was beyond irresponsible.
"Relax, boy," Grandpa Xu said, waving a hand. "I had a good reason."
Still, Xu Kai said nothing, his jaw tightening. His silence was suffocating, pressing down on the room like an impending storm.
Grandpa Xu coughed, clearing his throat. "So, I met a young girl earlier. Sold her that old generator. And, oh, your Hummer A1."
The temperature in the room seemed to plummet.
Xu Kai’s head tilted slightly, his dark eyes narrowing. The muscle in his jaw ticked once. Twice. But he said nothing.
Grandpa Xu, sensing the dangerous shift, gave a light chuckle. "Now, now, don’t look at me like that. You’re making this old man nervous."
Still, silence.
Grandpa Xu took another sip of tea, then finally let out a sigh. "Alright, fine, glare at me all you want. But I assure you, I had a good reason."
Xu Kai’s voice was low, barely above a whisper, but it sent a shiver through the old man. "Who?"
Grandpa Xu tapped his fingers against the teacup. "A young girl. Lively, bit temperamental. She had a certain... aura about her. Quite capable, too."
Xu Kai closed his eyes for a moment, as if trying to contain himself. When he opened them again, they were unreadable. "You sold my car without asking."
"Oh, don’t be so dramatic. You can always modify another one," Grandpa Xu waved dismissively. "Besides, I didn’t just throw it away. I traded it."
Xu Kai’s fingers curled slightly at his sides. His patience was razor-thin, his restraint hanging by a thread.
Grandpa Xu let the silence stretch, then, just as Xu Kai’s fury seemed ready to boil over, he spoke. "For a high-quality Aether Fruit."
The stillness in Xu Kai’s posture changed. Slightly.
Grandpa Xu smirked, lifting a small box from the table and placing it between them. "Not just any Aether Fruit, mind you. A top-tier one. The kind that could make all the difference."
Xu Kai stared at the box, his expression unreadable. His anger didn’t vanish, but the tension in his shoulders shifted. Slowly, he reached for the box, his fingers grazing the lid.
Grandpa Xu sighed dramatically. "Fine, fine. Next time, I’ll tell you before I sell your most prized possession."
Grandpa Xu leaned back, clearly enjoying the dramatic shift in his grandson’s reaction. "That’s right. A pristine, high-grade Aether Fruit. One that could extend my life by years—possibly decades."
Xu Kai’s eye twitched. He opened his mouth, then closed it again, his brain struggling between fury and shock. Finally, he let out a long, suffering groan, dragging a hand down his face. "Grandpa, I swear... if you weren’t old, I’d decide to live alone."
Grandpa Xu chuckled, patting his grandson’s arm. "That’s the spirit, boy. Now, drink your tea before it gets cold. And stop whining about the car. If you’re really that attached, you can go find that girl and win it back."
Xu Kai glared at him. "Don’t tell me this was your idea from the start."
Grandpa Xu only smiled knowingly, sipping his tea with a pleased expression. "Good luck with that, my boy. Something tells me she won’t give it up easily."
Xu Kai had a sinking feeling that his grandfather was right. But one thing was certain... He had to get back his vehicle. He would compensate the girl with anything she wanted, but not that vehicle.
So he had to find her before it was too late.
"A high-quality Aether Fruit." That was the only thought that came into his mind at first glance.
Grandpa Xu chuckled. "Still mad?"
Xu Kai looked up, his gaze like ice.
Xu Kai simply picked up the box and turned to leave, his silence more ominous than any words he could have spoken.
Grandpa Xu watched him go, shaking his head with a grin. "Brat holds grudges worse than his grandmother."
A look at it was enough for people to know whether it was high-grade or low-grade.
The fruit had an oval shape with little spikes at the top, and it was in a dark shade of violet.
The dark violet color was enough to prove that it was of high grade. They had noticed over time that the darker the color, the higher the grade of the fruit.
The world had gone mad for the Aether Fruit.
No one knew where it came from or if there was even a tree that bore it, because no one had ever seen one. It simply appeared out of nowhere on the black market four months ago.
At the time, no one paid it much attention. It was just an odd-looking fruit, partially pink with streaks of violet.
