Chapter 46: Second Encounter
Chapter 46: Chapter 46: Second Encounter
A shiver ran down her spine, but not from fear. It was because of sheer disgust. Their haughty, arrogant tone was enough to make her stomach churn.
"Damn! She had never encountered such leeches. It seemed the heavens were hell-bent on ruining her mood."
She barely had time to react before Chen Ruolin and Wang Xueyi emerged from the alley entrance, panting like true bitches. If she had a bone, she would have thrown it at them. Aren’t all bitches like that?
"Hmph!"
They must have figured out she had taken a detour.
Unaware of how ridiculous they looked to her, Wang Xueyi sneered while brushing a few strands of hair from her face like a queen. But believe her, in Liora’s eyes, it really just looked like a bitch was bitching.
Wang Xueyi continued with a sneer, still unaware of Liora’s thoughts. "Really thought you could run away?"
Liora forced a smile, despite the irritation bubbling inside her. "I mean, technically, I did. After all, who wants to be chased by a group of rabid bitches?"
Chen Ruolin’s eye twitched. "You fucking—"
Liora didn’t wait for her to finish. With a swift move, she grabbed a loose crate beside her and shoved it in their direction. It wasn’t heavy, but it was enough to make them stumble.
"Later, losers!" Liora sang before dashing away again. She even left a remark behind her, "Hey, see! A bitch is bitching!"
Chen Ruolin screeched in frustration. "SOMEONE STOP HER!"
Unfortunately for her, most of their lackeys were still lost in the running crowd, so she and Wang Xueyi had to chase Liora themselves.
Liora zigzagged through narrow alleyways, her mind racing. She needed a solid hiding spot. Somewhere they wouldn’t think to look—
Then she saw it. A rundown shop with a half-broken door slightly ajar.
Perfect.
She darted inside, pressing her back against the wall and keeping her breathing quiet. The interior was dark and smelled of dust and rotting wood. Hopefully, no one had been using this place for anything sketchy.
The sound of rushed footsteps outside made her tense.
"She has to be here somewhere!" Chen Ruolin’s voice echoed through the street. "Find her!"
Liora held her breath as shadows passed by the cracked doorway.
"This is insane," she thought. "I didn’t even DO anything!"
Then, just as she was about to relax, something heavy shifted behind her.
Liora’s heart nearly leapt out of her chest.
She turned her head ever so slowly, her eyes adjusting to the darkness.
There, barely a foot away from her, was a person.
A man, tall and broad-shouldered, standing in the shadows like he had been there the whole time.
Liora’s brain short-circuited.
Liora barely had time to react before the scream ripped from her throat—
Only for a large, calloused hand to slam over her mouth, muffling the sound instantly.
Her breath hitched as the man’s large hand completely cover her petite mouth. The man was impossibly fast. One second, she was alone, and the next, a strong body had pinned her against the rough wooden wall. She could not even react before being plastered on the wall.
Heat radiated from him, his sheer size swallowing her presence whole. The scent of steel and faint traces of rain clung to him, along with something distinctly male—intense masculinity that made liora’s head spin.
Liora’s heart hammered, her hands instinctively pressing against his chest in a desperate attempt to push him away.
But it was like shoving against a stone wall. The man was as strong as a fucking wall, completely unmoving and unyielding.
"Who—" She tried to speak, but her words were muffled against his palm. Her breath tickled his skin, but the man didn’t flinch. Finally she completed her sentence with difficulty. "Who are you?"
His silence was deafening.
Liora twisted in his grasp, her body arching as she tried to wiggle free from his grip, but the more she moved, the more she felt it—the firm muscles beneath his uniform, the sheer power hidden beneath the controlled restraint of his touch.
His grip on her tightened, his hand pressing firmer against her lips, his other arm braced against the wall beside her head, completely caging her in.
"Stop moving," he finally spoke with his low, husky voice vibrating against her skin. "Or I will throw you out."
The quiet threat sent a sharp shiver down her spine.
His breath fanned across her cheek, warm, dangerous, the distance between them almost nonexistent. Her back was fully pressed against the wall, but still, his body hovered over hers, their legs nearly brushing.
His hold wasn’t painful, but it was unshakable—like a predator simply keeping its prey still before deciding what to do next.
Liora’s body betrayed her, her skin prickling under his touch. Every nerve in her body was hyperaware of him—the warmth of his palm over her lips, the rough pads of his fingers, the way his chest subtly rose and fell, calm and unbothered while she was a mess.
She swallowed hard. He was too close.
And she hated that why the heavens was hell bent on testing her patient, for a split second, she wasn’t entirely sure if her shiver was from fear—or something else.
Finally, after what felt like an eternity, the man exhaled through his nose, as if she was exhausting, and pulled back.
His hand slid from her lips slowly, his fingertips grazing against her skin for a fleeting second before he fully released her and stepped away.
Liora sucked in a sharp breath, staggering slightly, her heart still slamming against her ribs. She pressed a shaky hand to her chest, willing herself to calm down.
And then, as the dim light from the cracked doorway illuminated his face, realization crashed into her like a thunderclap.
Her lips parted in shock. That face.
The cold, piercing eyes. The sharp, chiseled jawline. The sheer, suffocating presence that made the air thick around him.
A memory flashed through her mind—of a tall, broad-shouldered man she had met on the very first day of her arrival in this world. And the same man who had flung her like a ragdoll.
Her stomach twisted. No way. It was him.
Xu Kai.
Of all the people in this godforsaken world... why the hell did it have to be him?!
