Chapter 43: Chapter 43: If I fail, I die?

Liora wiped the last trace of wetness from her cheeks, determined not to let her emotions take over. But just as she forced herself to focus on the road ahead, a sudden chime echoed in her mind.

Ding...

Her steps faltered as a blue screen popped up in her vision, and she blinked in disbelief.

She stared at the new mission alert, reading it over and over, but the words never changed. "Was this damn system messing with her head?" She read it again, convincing herself that her emotions were clouding her vision. Just to be sure, she went through it once more, word by word.

[New Mission Alert..]

[Obtain a fully functional generator from the Black Market...]

[Mission reward: +500 survival points, +100 exp points, unlock Level 1 factory, 50% stats booster, +1 lucky draw chance..]

Liora was speechless at such a generous reward. How could the stingy system be giving her such a good reward? A total of 500 survival points, really? She could only get a maximum of 100 survival points by killing countless zombies, but now for a single mission, she could actually get 500 points.

And what was with that Level 1 factory? Would it be a factory to produce goods? Will she not become a little rich lady after having her own factory?

But as she read the next words, it did not take seconds before her smile dropped. She stared at the words with a look of disbelief.

[Mission Interval: 7 days, remaining time: 6 days 23:58:02]

[Mission Failure Penalty: Instant death]

Liora froze. Her breath hitched, and for a moment, she thought she had read it wrong. She rubbed her eyes and looked again. No. It was still there. And so was the word death.

A cold chill ran down her spine. Death? Just for failing a mission?

She almost screamed. Almost. But she bit down on her tongue, stopping herself just in time. Her eyes darted to the others, who were walking ahead, completely oblivious to her silent panic attack.

Her hands trembled as she took a deep breath and forced herself to calm down before mentally yelling at the system. "What the hell is this?!"

The system responded immediately, its voice calm and emotionless.

[This is your next mission, Host. You need to obtain a fully functional generator from the Black Market within seven days. Failure to do so will result in death.]

Liora felt like she was going to pass out. "What the hell is a generator?!" she demanded.

[Generators are devices used to produce electricity, which powers machines, lights, and various electronic equipment,] the system explained patiently. It even defined electricity as it knew Liora would also not be familiar with this term.

[Electricity was a major source of energy before the world fell into chaos. In the apocalypse, it is now a highly valuable resource.]

Liora’s mind spun like a headless chicken. She knew what machines were, but electricity? That was something entirely foreign to her. She had never needed to worry about such things in her previous life. If she needed light, there were candles. If she needed warmth, there were fireplaces. But now, she was supposed to find some mysterious device that created energy?

Her stomach twisted as she gritted her teeth. "And where the hell am I supposed to find this so-called Black Market?"

The system provided an immediate answer.

[The Black Market is a secret trading hub that only opens twice a month. It is not run by any official power but rather by those who control rare resources. In the apocalypse, this is where people trade for high-value items such as weapons, medicine, and power sources and even food items.]

Liora’s jaw tightened. Twice a month? And I have seven days?

Her eye twitched. "You expect me to find this hidden market, get a generator, and return within a week? And if I fail, I die?!"

[Correct, Host.]

Liora inhaled sharply, barely restraining the urge to strangle something. "You crazy bastard system! I swear, if I find a way to destroy you, I’ll—!"

[Host, please remain calm,] the system interrupted. [This mission is crucial for your survival and future. Without electricity, you will struggle to progress. However, do not worry. With my guidance, you will certainly succeed.]

Liora exhaled through gritted teeth. She didn’t know whether to believe the system or not, but death was not something she wanted to risk.

Her mind raced. If she wanted to complete this mission, she needed to move fast. She had to find out where the Black Market was held, figure out how to enter, and then somehow get her hands on a generator.

"We have arrived. Let’s go inside."

Liora suddenly returned from her daze as she looked at the concern-filled gaze of Zhou Yinuo. She immediately asked, "Huh?! What... what happened? Why are you all staring at me?" in a lost tone.

"We have arrived at the base. Let’s go inside," Zhou Yinuo repeated again. She did not know why Liora had suddenly become so lost. She could only hope that she was alright.

"Yeah! Let’s go." Liora immediately realized that she had walked such a distance while conversing with the system that she did not even feel her surroundings.

At Liora’s nod, everyone stepped towards the gate and showed their IDs, including Liora. After the same blood test, they were all allowed inside the base.

"I will walk back to home. You should go and grab the merit for completing the mission," Liora said and hurriedly ran away without even giving them the time to respond to her.

She did not have much time. Every minute was very precious to her. She could risk anything but not her life. That’s why she had to immediately plan her strategy for the Black Market.

The rewards for the missions were so generous, which meant the mission itself would be hard and not a puny mission where she could knock out a zombie and gain rewards.

Liora was busy in her thoughts that she did not even notice that the expressions of the trio fell as soon, she left.

They looked at each other with disappointment in their eyes. Everyone had the same thought—that Liora must be really angry with them. But what could they do? They were just powerless humans trying to survive in this apocalyptic world.

"Zhou Yinuo, you should go behind Liora. Liang Zihan and I will meet the administrators to submit the mission."

"Okay." She nodded and immediately dashed behind Liora, afraid that if she lost sight of her, Liora would disappear from their world.
