Chapter 29: Chapter 29: A good morning

The fire slowly turned from a raging blaze into glowing embers, casting a warm glow on them. It was not much, but it was still able to warm them in the biting cold of the apocalypse world.

It was not winter season, but still, the nights of the apocalypse had always been chillingly cold. And in winter, it had the ability to freeze anyone to death within an hour.

Liora sat with her back against the counter, arms crossed as she watched the others settle in. Zhou Yinuo curled up beside a stack of blankets they had found earlier in the warehouse, her soft breathing a sign that exhaustion had finally won over.

Liang Zihan stretched out on the cold floor, using his arm as a pillow, while Chen Wei leaned against the boarded-up window. Even though his eyes were closed, Liora could feel he was still very vigilant towards the surroundings.

Everyone’s face was marked with exhaustion, but they had a pleasant expression. After all, a good meal in the apocalypse was enough to lighten everyone’s mood.

Liora had never thought that she would one day be this content with just a simple meal, a meal she wouldn’t even look at in the past.

But alas, time stops for no one.

Outside, the night stretched on. The veil covering the sky looked even more ominous than during the day. The little bit of groaning and screaming of zombies could be heard from afar.

But they were no problem because Liora had made sure that none of them could reach their resting place. Their temporary home was safe for the night.

With exhaustion creeping into her mind, Liora also drifted into a peaceful sleep without any dreams.

Morning came quietly. The first rays of light seeped through the cracks in the boards, illuminating dust particles that floated in the stale air. The group stirred one by one, shaking off the stiffness from sleeping on hard surfaces.

Hunger was no longer clawing at their stomachs as usual, and that was a new feeling for them. For as long as they could remember, they had always woken up hungry after sleeping.

Liang Zihan was the first to groan as he sat up, stretching his sore muscles. "I swear, I’ve never appreciated a bed more in my life," he muttered, rubbing his stiff neck.

Zhou Yinuo yawned, still half-buried under her blanket. "Good morning... I think?" Her voice was hoarse from sleep, but there was a lightness in her tone.

Chen Wei nodded toward them. "Morning," he said simply, his sharp gaze already sweeping the room. He had barely moved from his spot by the window, and from the way his fingers twitched toward his weapon, it was clear he had been on edge even in his sleep.

Liora rolled her shoulders as she stood up, brushing dust off her clothes. "Well, we were able to sleep peacefully, so I’d say it’s a decent morning."

"Yeah! We are really bold to sleep peacefully outside the base. If I said it to someone, they would think I had gone insane," Liang Zihan muttered, half asleep.

Chen Wei stepped toward the window and carefully peeled back one of the wooden slats, just enough to glimpse outside. The streets remained eerily silent. Only a few scattered zombies wandered outside, the lowest level. "Looks clear," he murmured.

Liora stretched and exhaled. "Alright, let’s go to the base."

They moved down to the ground floor, their footsteps making small noises on the stairs. The shelves lay as they had left them, boxes of supplies stacked neatly in the corner. Nothing had been disturbed.

It was a relief that no one had come to find trouble, or it would simply be a hassle to fight another group who was eyeing their supplies.

After all, it was not unheard of that people had lost their morality to the point that even stealing felt like nothing. Now, the previous rules of the world no longer held any importance. Only surviving mattered, and how you survived entirely depended on you.

Liang Zihan whistled. "Still here. Guess we got lucky."

Zhou Yinuo clapped her hands together. "That means we can actually bring everything back without trouble."

Liora nodded, but her left eye kept twitching. She had a bad premonition in her heart, but she did not know why. "Let’s not jinx it."

Because if someone really came here to fight for supplies, she would make sure they regretted their existence, Liora thought to herself. But she did not know that she would bite her tongue in the future for claiming this.

With the supplies still intact, the next step was clear: Chen Wei and Liang Zihan had to leave for the base.

They had a mountain of supplies. Dozens of boxes filled with food, medicine, and other essentials—far more than they could carry on foot. They had to get everything to the base, but hauling it all by themselves was impossible.

"We need a vehicle," Chen Wei said, breaking the silence as everyone was busy thinking of a solution to carry out these supplies. He stretched his stiff shoulders and glanced at the supplies stacked neatly in the corner. "There’s no way we can carry all of this back."

Liang Zihan nodded in agreement. "And we can’t leave them here unguarded either. We’ll have to split up."

Liora frowned. "Not ideal."

"Nothing ever is," Chen Wei replied. "But we don’t have a choice."

"The situation will be more problematic if someone sees us with so many supplies. We will all be doomed if we encounter thugs on the way. Losing the supplies is one thing, but we can’t guarantee that we will make it out alive," Chen Wei said in a worried voice.

He knew where they stood. They were no match for the outsiders who carried weapons or were Awakeners. It would simply be suicidal.

After a brief discussion, they settled on a plan. Chen Wei and Liang Zihan would return to the base to inform their group about the supplies and request a vehicle. Liora and Zhou Yinuo would stay behind to guard everything until they returned.
