Chapter 26: Liora’s Zombie
Chapter 26: Chapter 26: Liora’s Zombie
They must have decided to flee the moment she started fighting the Level 2 zombie. Typical. Zombies were territorial, after all. They avoided higher-ranked ones, knowing they wouldn’t survive in a fight.
"Cowards," she scoffed.
Zombies are territorial. The powerful zombies often kill lower-ranked zombies. So the lower-ranked zombies always avoid Level 2 zombies. It was not because of their intelligence.
It was just their instincts that did not allow them to go closer to the higher-ranked zombies, because higher-ranked zombies become berserk when they sense other zombies eyeing their prey.
Only similar-level zombies form hordes because they do not sense danger from zombies of the same level.
It can be said that they only attack humans mindlessly. They cannot decipher whether the human is stronger than them or not. Or maybe the smell of fresh flesh blinds them, making them attack.
But it made Liora ponder. If they become blinded in front of humans, why do they not become blinded in front of higher-level zombies? Just how could they avoid them?
In her opinion, they are mindless. They should not be able to tell whether someone is higher than them or lower than them.
Sigh! What can she do... She still has many things to understand about this world... And it is not like the humans of this world are well aware either. It was their first time too in an apocalypse. It will take them more time to understand the zombies’ nature and how their minds work.
Simply calling them mindless is stupidity because Liora has realized they are not stupid at all. And after her encounter with the Level 2 zombie, her belief became even more severe.
"Whatever!" She would think about this later, because now the zombies were running away, and Liora did not want her rewards to run away. Yes, in her eyes, the Level 1 zombies were walking rewards. She just had to punch them and gain rewards. How could she allow them to run away that easily? Dream on!
The Level 1 zombies—her walking rewards—were trying to escape.
A smirk tugged at her lips. "Oh no, no, no. You don’t get to run after I did all the hard work. Be good little XP points and come back here!"
With that, she dashed after them with a renewed excitement.
Zhou Yinuo was crouched on the floor, her head buried in her knees as she cried nonstop. Her shoulders were shaking with grief.
Liang Zihan knelt beside her, his heart aching at the sight. His own eyes burned with tears, but he held them back. He knew that if Zhou Yinuo saw him crying, she would break down even more.
In this world, it was just the three of them now. They had no one else to rely on. After losing their parents and relatives, they only had each other.
They had watched their parents die. They had seen their friends turn into monsters, whom they died fighting. Some were simply lost in this broken world, where all communication had collapsed.
No one could say if their loved ones were alive or dead. They could only hope that maybe, one day, they would all meet each other again.
But for Zhou Yinuo, it was worse. She had watched her mother throw herself in front of a zombie just to save her. She had watched as her mother was bitten, and then she had watched again as her mother turned into a zombie and tried to attack her.
She was still just a girl. That scene—her mother’s sacrifice, her mother’s transformation—it had broken something inside her. She had almost lost the will to live. The only thing worse than watching her mother turn into a monster was what came after.
Because in the end, she had been the one to kill her own mother’s zombie with her own hands.
She had almost fallen into complete despair. It had been him and Chen Wei who had pulled her out of that abyss. They had kept her from drowning in that grief, from losing herself completely.
But now, all of that pain came crashing back. Another person had thrown their life away to save her. Another life lost because of her.
And she could not take it anymore.
Liang Zihan was lost in his thoughts when he heard a noise coming from the stairs. His body immediately tensed, and he looked at Chen Wei, whose reaction was similar to his.
Both of their faces became pale at the thought of zombies coming up. Just by the sheer number of zombies, they knew they could never fight them alone.
The three of them were still drowning in grief, their hearts heavy with guilt and loss. But before they could even process the pain, the sound of footsteps grew nearer with each passing second.
Ticking like a time bomb on their nerves, in their nervousness, they did not even realize that zombies did not have such sharp footsteps.
Just as the figure was about to come from the stairs, their bodies tensed instantly.
Liang Zihan and Chen Wei exchanged a look, their hands gripping their weapons. Even Zhou Yinuo, who had been hiccuping from all the crying, forced herself to stay silent.
She was terrified that even the smallest sound would bring disaster. She would never allow her friends to die just because of her stupid hiccups.
The footsteps got closer.
Their breathing turned shallow.
They had assumed they were safe up here, but it seemed the zombies had found a way to the top floor. There was no time to hesitate. If the zombies had really made their way up, they would fight. Even if they died, they would go down swinging.
Weapons raised. Muscles tense. Not a single breath wasted.
And then—
Liora stepped onto the first floor, casually munching on a big red apple.
The trio stood frozen with their weapons still raised, their brains unable to comprehend what they were seeing. Shock was clearly written on their faces as if they had seen a ghost.
Liora blinked at them, completely oblivious to the fact that she had nearly been turned into minced meat. She took another bite of her apple, chewed, and then tilted her head.
"What?" she asked, as if she hadn’t just scared them half to death.
"You... you are alive?" Liang Zihan asked in a stuttering voice. He was almost sure that it was Liora’s zombie coming to take revenge on them after they had abandoned her in the horde of zombies.
But wasn’t her zombie still too pretty? She even looked the same as before.
