Apocalypse: Transmigrated with an Overlord System
Chapter 103: New Mission Alert

Chapter 103: Chapter 103: New Mission Alert

After scrubbing every last bit of spider guts and dried blood from their bodies, everyone felt reborn. Even the air around them seemed fresher.

Zhao Ren stood tall near the firepit set up by Shen Haoran, flipping meat with expert movements. Unlike his usual lazy banter, his focus was sharp now. His expression was serious as he added a few more spices from a small bottle he pulled out of his bag.

The rich smell of grilled meat filled the air, making everyone’s stomach growl at once.

When he finally served it on makeshift plates, everyone fell silent for a few moments. They chewed slowly, savoring the flavors.

"...Damn. This is actually good," Ji Ming muttered, a bit shocked.

"It’s more than good," Chen Wei agreed, still chewing. "It’s amazing."

"If it was Yun Shou or Ji Ming cooking, we’d be eating burnt charcoal by now," Mei added dryly.

Yun Shou raised his chopsticks in defense. "Hey! I’ve improved. Last time, I didn’t even burn the soup."

Everyone stared at him.

"...How do you even burn soup?" Liora asked with a confused expression.

Yun Shou opened his mouth to explain, then gave up and went back to eating in silence.

After the meal, they all packed up quickly. Shirts were tucked in. Boots were laced tight. Each person wore a vest and anything that could at least give them some safety. The peaceful rest was over—it was time to move again.

They stepped out from the cracked villa entrance, the one the massive Black Widow had collapsed during its rampage. Carefully climbing over the rubble, they reached the main road beyond.

They didn’t even need to speak. Everyone had already agreed—walking was too risky now. This entire area was crawling with insects, and if they stayed too long on foot, they would only invite trouble. The villa might’ve been quiet now, but the streets ahead were dangerous.

Liora brought out her Hummer from her space. Ji Ming did the same, summoning a bulky black military jeep big enough to fit six people.

Without delay, the group split up. Liora, Chen Wei, Liang Zihan, Zhou Yinuo, and Eli climbed into the Hummer. Meanwhile, Zhao Ren, Ji Ming, Yun Shou, Yan Lin, Shen Haoran, and Mei jumped into the jeep.

With a few loud revs, both vehicles roared to life and dashed into the street, driving side by side.

Liora sat in the front passenger seat. Her arm rested against the window as she gazed at the ruined world outside. The glass was smudged with some dirt, but the silence out there was unnerving.

Just then, a loud ding echoed in her mind.

[New Mission Unlocked: Kill a Mutated Level 8 Zombie.]

Liora’s heart dropped, and her eyes widened at the sight of the new notification.

"What?" she muttered under her breath.

Level 8? She felt like her eyes were playing tricks on her—but no, the mission was clear. She hadn’t read it wrong. But this was madness. She wasn’t even strong enough to face a proper Level 6 zombie yet. How was she supposed to take down a Level 8?

She immediately asked the system, her thoughts filled with worry and confusion. Are you trying to get me killed?

But the system’s voice answered without hesitation.

[Host has potential. You must awaken your true powers. The mission is to push you forward. Trust the system. This is for your growth.]

Liora sighed hard and rolled her eyes. As if she would believe its nonsense.

"Yeah, yeah, you’re always looking out for me," she muttered, clearly unconvinced.

Still, part of her couldn’t help but wonder. A Level 8 zombie? Was it nearby? How would she even find it?

Her eyes drifted to the rearview mirror. Suddenly, she met Eli’s blue eyes. The boy was watching her quietly from the back seat, sitting between Liang Zihan and Zhou Yinuo. His stare was calm—almost too calm for a child. And it looked more like he was listening to her talk with the system.

Just for a second, Liora thought his gaze held something deeper, like he understood her thoughts and even heard her words with the system.

But then, his expression changed. His lips curved into a small, innocent smile.

Liora blinked, then chuckled softly. Maybe I’m just imagining things. How could that be possible?

Chen Wei was driving smoothly, keeping the vehicle behind Ji Ming’s jeep. For now, the road was still empty. No creatures had shown up.

"Too quiet," Liang Zihan muttered, peering out.

"Maybe everything ran off because of that spider," Zhou Yinuo said. "That thing probably scared even the zombies."

No one disagreed.

But as they crossed the outer road, the world ahead changed. First came small movements—legs skittering across cracked pavement. Then strange buzzing sounds filled the air.

Mutated insects appeared on the sides of the road—almost dozens of them. Long limbs, sharp mandibles, and twitching wings.

Without stopping, the group opened their windows and began using their abilities to kill them.

Zhao Ren’s blade-metal ability created several blades in the air, slicing many bugs clean in half.

Liang Zihan raised his hand and, with a swift move, a boulder lifted from the ground and smashed heavily into one of the mosquitoes, turning it into a meat patty.

Zhou Yinuo used her wind ability and sliced the wings off the mutated insects.

Liora did not have the ability to attack from inside the car, and the same went for Chen Wei—but Chen Wei was busy driving. Only Liora had nothing to do, so she closed her eyes and tried to test her soul-sight ability.

She focused—not on the bugs’ bodies, but on their souls. She wanted to see if her new soul sight was only about vision or if it had hidden uses.

Her mind reached out, touching the aura of the dying mutated insects nearby.

Suddenly, faint outlines shimmered—ghost-like shadows hovering inside twitching corpses.

Her eyes opened slowly. But she wasn’t satisfied. She wanted more. Could she interact with these souls? Manipulate them? Destroy them?

Liora stared at the soul of one of the insects. Now she realized she didn’t have to close her eyes. If she focused more, she could still see the souls.

Just as she was staring at one intently, the soul suddenly flickered wildly and flew toward her, abandoning its body.

She almost screamed in horror at the sight.
