Chapter 238: Chapter 238: An Emotional Moment
Chu Miao took Fang Yao back to the fifteenth floor. They appeared at the door of the apartment they had decided to use as a dining area.
She knocked on the door and waited until a soldier came to open it before going inside.
"Fairy sister!" The person who opened the door was Fu Nie.
He just blurted out the first thing that came to mind before his brain could register. Chu Miao didn’t care what they called her anymore.
"Take him to shower and ask someone who knows how to cook to make him light porridge. Add some minced meat and vegetables. In short, make it nutritious and well-balanced, but light.
Are there any warm clothes he can wear?" Chu Miao instructed Fu Nie, but then remembered that these soldiers probably didn’t have any decent clothes.
"Eeh...well, we only have combat uniforms. Is that okay for him?" Fu Nie asked as he scratched the back of his head.
It was a habit he developed and does it when nervous or in a dilemma.
"Never mind." Chu Miao said as she brought her hand close to Ye Xuan’s and touched his space ring with her own.
Some clothes and other essential items were silently transferred to him.
Feeling the addition, Ye Xuan didn’t bother asking and immediately took them out and handed them over to Fu Nie.
"These should do." Ye Xuan said with a deep voice without betraying any emotions.
Fu Nie immediately took the items that included two pairs of warm clothes and shoes, and a pair of socks.
There was also a bathing towel and soap. Everything Fang Yao needed to be cleaned and disinfected.
"Go get cleaned and have something to eat to gain some strength before going back home. Give your dad some time to clean and disinfect the house before you go back to prevent a relapse." Chu Miao said to Fang Yao.
Fang Yao had been wondering why she took him away, but now he knew. She was so kind and thoughtful. How could people slander her so much, especially his mother.
She said all kinds of nasty things about Chu Miao all day long. She had even started talking bad about her behind her back long before she killed his brother.
His brother’s death had only made things worse, but also made his mother afraid to confront her.
Now, after interacting with her for only a short period of time, he could tell that she wasn’t the kind of person his mother said she was.
He was glad he didn’t listen to his mother’s instigation before.
"Thank you, sister Chu." Fang Yao expressed his gratitude before following Fu Nie inside.
He was led straight to the bathroom to take a warm shower.
Even though the soldiers were used to having baths and taking showers with cold water even in the middle of the freezing winter, it didn’t mean they had to treat everyone like them.
Especially if that person was sick. So, even though there was no longer electricity to boil the water in the bathroom, they connected a generator to warm the water for Fang Yao’s shower.
As Fang Yao ate the rich porridge that had so much minced meat and finely chopped vegetables, tears started to fall.
He hadn’t had such a delicious meal for a long time. Before the apocalypse, even though his mother didn’t treat him as well as his brother, they still ate the same meals.
So, his food had always been rich and sumptuous. But after the apocalypse, the first few days they ate normally until they realized that they wouldn’t be able to go to the supermarket for shopping as zombies were roaming everywhere.
Moreover, the extreme heat stopped those who had the courage to go out from daring to take a single step outside.
So, they started cutting down on the amount of food they ate. Moreover, they soon ran out of fresh vegetables. His mother never bought frozen vegetables, so after the fresh ones ran out during the extreme heat period, he had never seen a green leaf let alone eaten one.
Soon, they didn’t have meat either and started to survive on boiled rice with legumes or noodles.
Now, there was barely any rice left in the house and only a few packets of instant noodles remained.
Seeing such rich porridge was like a dream for him. He wished he could take some for his father, but he didn’t dare ask.
Food was already so scarce and the fact that Chu Miao was willing to share some with him while still feeding so many soldiers proved how generous she was.
The soldiers nearby saw the boy shedding tears into his bowl of porridge and said nothing.
If they weren’t men trained to have iron will they would have shed tears too when they saw the spread of dishes on the table at noon.
People don’t usually appreciate what they have until they have lost it. They had always taken everything around them for granted. The vegetables on their tables are treated like dirt and others even refuse to eat them, until now that not a single green vegetable could be bought or planted.
They were so grateful to the Chu family because they could eat things that were deemed normal before, but they were like rare gold.
Once Fang Yao was done eating, he stood up to go and wash his bowl but Fu Nie took it from him and went to wash it.
Yin Wei came to him and asked him to sit down.
"You are still sick, don’t touch cold water and render the efforts of the fairy’s mother useless."
" What do you call her that?" Fang Yao asked while looking at the slender soldier in front of him.
He looked slim but one could tell that his body had a lot of power.
"She saved us and protected us. She appeared like a fairy out of nowhere, that’s why we call her that." Yin Wei replied with a slight smile.
He was remembering how Chu Miao had appeared in front of them as they were almost sprayed with bullets and those bullets disappeared.
It was the most magical scene he had ever seen. A scene he and his brothers were unlikely to forget.
