Chapter 228: Chapter 228: Military Leaders

In a military base over a hundred kilometers away, in a conference room on the sixth floor of the partially flooded office building, several leaders sat around the table while two soldiers stood to the side.

The expression on the leaders’ faces could not be described with words. There was shock, indignation, fear, bewilderment, and desire all mixed into one.

They had just finished listening to the report given by the two soldiers standing in the room.

According to the soldiers, they had failed their mission because of two people whom the leaders never expected to cross.

They had no idea about General Chu’s granddaughter before, so they never really thought of ever offending such a person. But Ye Xuan was known to all of them.

He was the youngest Major General in history and was not to be trifled with. Even when he was still active in the military, he answered directly to the president and while his title was only that of a major general, those in the know knew that he was way above that.

He only obeyed the orders given by the generals just to give his grandfather who had friendly relations with them some face. However, nobody dared to order him around like other major generals. The reason for such special treatment was very simple, he was capable of accomplishing difficult missions that even the most experienced soldiers wouldn’t dare to think about carrying out.

However, to think that Qi Long had managed to align himself with this God of death. It was surprising and infuriating.

If they had known that he was leaving the military to join Ye Xuan, they wouldn’t have dared to make a move on him. Even if they did, they would have done it in secret.

But now that Ye Xuan knows about their attempt to eliminate his people, he will be on guard and if anything happens to them, their base would be the first suspect.

What bad luck they had.

What made them even more furious was Liu Chen, that traitor. How could he switch sides just like that? He was supposed to complete a mission and after failure, instead of coming back to report, he followed the enemy and left. Which soldier does such a thing?

Losing Liu Chen as a loyal subordinate was a huge blow to their first base. Even though he was a one-track mind person, he accomplished a lot of things because of his personality.

When giving him a dangerous mission, they didn’t have to worry about him not completing it even if it cost his life. However, they were all well aware that the guy had admired Ye Xuan for a long time and following him at the first chance he got was expected. They just hadn’t expected such a variable.

Moreover, the biggest variable in this whole situation was the Chu family granddaughter the soldiers talked about.

How could any normal human being stop a bullet? And not just one or two bullets, but a rain of them from numerous guns firing at the same time.

What kind of ability did she have? What’s more, the soldiers had also said that she could appear out of thin air, which they found difficult to believe.

They thought that maybe she had appeared when the soldiers weren’t paying attention and they thought she had appeared out of thin air. After all, a person was a whole entity made of matter, how could they appear and disappear into thin air?

But what was that comment about both Chu granddaughter and Ye Xuan having the ability to walk on water? Did they really think they were in the popular religious story about Jesus who could walk on water?

With how heavy a human being is, how could they float on water while standing let alone walk? They didn’t believe it one bit. They thought that the soldiers were afraid of a severe punishment for failing their mission and had made up some stories to make the whole situation sound scary and bizarre to get out of receiving a punishment.

However, the issue about the disappearance of the bullets needed further investigation. After all, they had seen the guns supplied to these soldiers. They had indeed been fired and the bullets used weren’t few. So, if so many bullets were missing and the targets were still alive, then there was a possibility that this part of the story was true.

In that case, they couldn’t blame the soldiers for not completing their mission. After all, how were they supposed to kill people when bullets couldn’t get near them?

"You are dismissed." Qi Long’s immediate superior said to the two soldiers.

He secretly heaved a sigh of relief when he heard the story, thinking that the last few members of his elite team were still alive.

To be honest, he was against taking action against them and killing them. After all, they were his men and he had trained them to their current abilities and position.

However, he was outvoted by the others who felt that leaving Qi Long and the others alive was creating a threat for their faction.

He understood that Qi Long going to the rival base might be problematic, but he didn’t think that they would betray him. That was why he had been apprehensive about taking action against them and also why he felt so relieved now that he knew they were still alive.

He wanted the power that they would obtain once the safe base started operating. However, he did not want that power by shedding the blood of his fellow soldiers.

He already felt guilty about the death of his squad that was told to clear zombies around the research institute. In fact, the reason they had been sent to that place was because they had been given a mission to retrieve some supplies that several capable civilians had collected in the early days of the apocalypse.

These people seemed to be quite intelligent and realized early on that things were changing for the worse. Therefore, instead of waiting for the government to help them and save them, they had taken matters into their own hands and gone out to collect supplies that would last a long time.

They had coincidentally raided an MRE factory and carried a large portion of food stuff and canned fruit from there.

The portion was large enough to supply the soldiers in the base with meals for a couple of days. This might sound like something insignificant, but with the scarcity of resources becoming more pronounced, even supplies that could fulfill the ration of one meal were like gold.

So, the food that could fill the meal rations for two days was more than precious.

However, Qi Long had refused to take the mission. He had said that his duty as a soldier was to protect the citizens and their property not to rob them.

This had infuriated the leaders who saw his rejection as insubordination and was punished by being locked in solitary confinement for three days.

After coming out and being asked to go fulfill the mission, he had still refused. That was why he and his team, who had supported his decision, had been sent to the research institute to kill zombies.

In fact, it had been a suicide mission from the start. The soldiers were still not used to fighting the undead, and needed some training to gain experience before going to the field to complete missions.

Nevertheless, his team had been sent there without proper training or protection equipment. Even when they called for backup, reinforcements were never sent.

He was helpless against the decision and could only pray that they would survive although the hope for that was slim.

He was actually surprised when a group of five came back. But he was also happy that at least, they had not been completely wiped out.

He had not expected his colleagues to suggest eliminating them because they couldn’t be used and might turn against them in the future.

He was aware that the case that brought the animosity, where Qi Long was supposed to lead his team to retrieve the supplies from civilians, was actually not to feed the soldiers.

It was to add to the personal stash of the resources the leaders were collecting to use to fight for power.

But while he felt sorry for his soldiers he was also a little greedy and wanted more power. So, he was constantly in a dilemma.

Hoping his people would survive, but also hoping that they wouldn’t in case they turned against him in the future for not protecting them.

"What do you think we should do?" One leader asked after the door closed when the soldiers left the room.

"I don’t know. Do you think what they said was true? Do those two really have such abilities?" Another leader asked as he also didn’t know what to do.

"It’s better to believe than to doubt and end up provoking trouble. Why don’t we wait until the rain stops so we can send someone to investigate? I am sure we will find out the truth." Qi Long’s leader suggested this when he heard the others questioning the authenticity of the report.

He was indeed cowardly. Not like a soldier at all.
