Chapter 41: The Dungeon Boss (2)

The ground shook violently beneath their feet, cracks spidering across the terrain as the dungeon gate glowed with ominous energy.

Rooaarrr!

A deafening roar escaped from within, sending a wave of pure, unrelenting dread washing over everyone. The roar was so powerful it seemed to reverberate through the very air, silencing the forest as every creature cowered in fear.

Kenji’s eyes turned cold, as his bear claws returned and glimmered in the sunlight. He stared intently at the dungeon entrance, as it slowly crumbled to the ground like dried bread being broken down. He could feel the raw, pulsating aura of the being within—a force so immense it seemed to suffocate his very soul. His instincts screamed at him to flee, but he shoved the thought aside, glancing back at the children. There was no way he could run away when they were around, what would happen to them if that happens?

BOOM!

The dungeon gate exploded with a thunderous crack, pieces of stone and magical energy flying everywhere. From the swirling vortex of black and red energy, a towering figure emerged.

It’s body coated in the very essence of darkness, as more crimson that blood itself. The sheer size of this beast was equivalent to three regular shadow beasts stacked upon each other. And unlike regular shadown beasts with no form, this one had a particularly ensnaring and vicious form.

The Shadow Beast was larger than anything Kenji had ever encountered. Its monstrous form resembled a horrifying blend of a dragon and a wolf, with massive, jagged wings and a tail that whipped violently, leaving destruction in its wake. Its glowing crimson eyes locked onto Kenji, and the air around them grew impossibly heavy.

Kenji positioned himself in front of the children, as he readied himself for the inevitable battle. "Haruka," he said in a low, steady voice. "Take the kids away. Right now!"

Haruka’s eyes widened in shock. "But mas- Kenji, you can’t face that thing alone—"

"Now!" Kenji’s voice boomed with an authority that silenced all protest. His gaze softened briefly as he turned to look at the children. "Haruka, get them to safety. I’ll hold it off as long as I can. You kids be good, I’ll be back soon," he said softly, and they replied with a slight nod.

Haruka hesitated for a moment but nodded,she had no choice anyways. Kenji was now her master, and so she couldn’t disobey him, even though what he was doing currently was incredibly stupid.

But other than that, she understood the gravity of the situation. Her form began to shift, her humanoid body shifting and bending from human with fox ears to a full blow fox twice the size of a grown man

She then bent down and scooped up Leia,Leo and Pheia, placing them on top of her back,"Hold on tight!" she said, her voice filled with urgency.

She glanced back at Kenji one last time. "Don’t die," she whispered," These children still need you," though the words were barely audible, as the footsteps of the monster became more audible.

Kenji didn’t respond. His focus was entirely on the Shadow Beast, which let out another guttural roar, its massive claws sinking into the ground as it advanced toward him. Haruka leaped into the air, her powerful legs propelling her far from the battlefield as she rushed the children away, her heart pounding with fear and a desperate hope to reach safety.

Kenji inhaled deeply, steadying himself. The Shadow Beast stood before him like a mountain, its shadow eclipsing the world around them. Its jagged teeth gleamed, and with a single swipe of its claw, it tore through a nearby tree, reducing it to splinters.

"This isn’t going to be easy," Kenji muttered. He raised his claws, the faint glow intensifying in the sunlight," but he knew it wouldn’t be enough.

The beast struck first, its massive claw descending with the force of a landslide. Kenji dodged to the side just in time, his agility having increased due to his contract with Haruka.

As Kenji dodged the claw and the claw descended, gouging a deep trench into the earth where he had stood. Kenji took this chance and countered with a slash to its foreleg, his claws biting into its smoky flesh.

The beast roared in pain but retaliated instantly, its tail whipping toward Kenji with blinding speed.

Kenji crossed his arms, bracing for impact, but the force of the blow was still able to have him sent flying backward, slamming into a tree. He coughed, blood dripping from his mouth as he struggled to stand. The Shadow Beast wasn’t just strong—it was relentless.

The beast lunged again, jaws wide open, aiming to crush Kenji. He rolled to the side, barely avoiding the attack, and slashed upward, his primitive like nails slicing through one of its wings. The beast howled, its dark aura flaring as black flames erupted from its body, forcing Kenji to move back.

"Is that all you’ve got?!" Kenji shouted, trying to mask his fear with confidence and a bit of light taunting. He charged forward, leaping into the air and bringing his sword down onto the beast’s head. His claws connected, but it was like striking solid steel. A piece of the claw chipping off, but the shadow beast barely flinched, it then used it’s tail to swatt Kenji aside like a mere insect.

Kenji crashed into the ground, he groaned loudly in pain, his body battered and bleeding. Still, he forced himself to stand, his vision blurry and his determination beginning to waver. I mean why does he not just run? Run away! But something was there, it was like something was locking him in place and stopped him from moving away from this fight.

The beast snarled, its red eyes glowing brighter as it prepared to unleash a devastating attack. A massive sphere of black energy formed between its black as night fingers, crackling with malevolent power. Kenji’s eyes widened. He knew he couldn’t dodge this one.

With a thundering cracked of energy, the shadow beast sent down the blast!

But as the attack was heading towards him, a figure suddenly imerged from nowhere and smacked the attack with all her strength.

" Stay Away from my master!" Haruka exclaimed, as she jumped into the air, using her powers of flight, she flew upwards to the head of the monster.

As she arrived, she channeled as much Mana in the surrounding air as she could," Eat this Blac Beard!: Malevolent strike; Pink Crystal Rain!" As she chanted her spell, the clouds above their heads immediately came together to form a circle, then the white fluffiness of the clouds turned pink just like cotton candy.

But this attack was no cotton candy, as humongous crystals suddenly began dropping from the pink clouds and into the shadow beast!

Boom!

With a loud bang, the crystals that fell until the shadow beast exploded the moment they came in contact with the beast’s ferocious body!

" Impossible!" Haruka exclaimed in shock and disbelief. Her most powerful attack was completely useless against this beast. What level of strength is this creature?!

In her moment of distraction, Haruka failed to notice the huge ball of black flame heading rapidly heading towards her.

" Haruka! Watch out!" Kenji exclaimed loudly. But it was too late, the strike was incredibly powerful and due to that, Haruka was sent flying into the ground, a few meters from where Kenji lay.

" I’m sorry master. I was useless to you," Haruka said, disheartened by her uselessness even after bragging and calling herself a legendary bloodline beast.

" Don’t worry, I still have a few tricks up my sleeve," Kenji said, even though deep down, he knew he too was basically weak right now.

" Shreya, can I use mana to create some spells of my own?" Kenji asked with hope in his voice.

[ Theoretically, yes, you can use mana for that. But host, remember, you are already in a weak state, if you over exert yourself to use magic, you may become a victim to blaclash, be careful] Shreya said, her mechanical voice showing a tinge of worry for the first time.

" Alright then, let’s do this!"

Kenji stood his ground, summoning every ounce of strength he had left. The poster then channeled another wave of the black energy sphere and unleashed it onto Kenji.

Seeing the giant black energy sphere heading towards him, Kenji grinned, as he pushed his hand forward and felt the rush of Mana seeping into his body.

Then with one thought, just one thought, a magical barrier like a huge wall Immediately erected itself in front of him, hoping this would be enough to stop the monster.

But unlike what he had imagined.

BOOM!

The impact was catastrophic.

The barrier shattered instantly, and Kenji was thrown backward, skidding across the ground.

His body was broken, blood pooling beneath him as he struggled to move. The Shadow Beast loomed over him, its crimson eyes glowing with triumph. Kenji’s vision dimmed, his strength fading. He could barely lift his head as the beast raised its massive claw for the final strike.

For a moment, everything seemed to freeze. The air was thick with tension, the sound of the beast’s snarls the only thing breaking the silence.

Then, piercing through the chaos, a familiar voice echoed in Kenji’s mind.
