Chapter 40: The Dungeon Boss.(1)

"My master," Haruka said as she raised her head.

Kenji smiled softly. He was happy that he could help her recover and cure her of the effects of the Chaos Bind Pill. But what he was truly and mostly happy about was the fact that he had gained a new ally by his side—and a very powerful one at that.

"Yay! Pink lady is saved!" Leia said, jumping around in excitement. She was thrilled that she had helped save someone’s life and even happier that Kenji-sama had gained a big reward out of it.

"Yes, Leia, pink lad—I mean Haruka—has been saved. And it’s all thanks to you. If not for you, we wouldn’t have been able to save her," Kenji said, bending down and ruffling her hair.

Then Kenji stood up and faced his new tamed beast: Haruka.

"So, Haruka, what happens now?" he asked with an inquisitive gaze. Although she was technically like his servant now, Kenji still saw her as a person and wanted to know her opinion about the whole situation.

Haruka looked straight into Kenji’s eyes, a bit of surprise evident in them. She had expected Kenji to begin treating her like a slave, as that’s technically what she was to him now.

But instead of doing what she had expected, he asked her genuine opinion, which, to her, was very shocking!

"I-I don’t know, master. I shall do whatever you want me to do. My life is in your hands now," she said with a calm smile that held many secrets.

Hearing her words, Kenji frowned. "You know, you’re a bit too uptight, Haruka. Loosen up. Also, I don’t want you to call me master; just Kenji will do."

Hearing his words, Haruka’s eyes widened once again in shock. "Alright, m-m-Kenji, I’ll try to loosen up."

[Host, abilities gained from the contract have been fully initiated into your body. You can now access forty percent of your contracted beast’s powers,] Shreya said in her cold mechanical voice once more, causing Kenji to reveal a shocked expression.

"You mean to say that I can... use the powers of a Cloud Moon Fox?" Kenji asked once again, confirming the words of his phoenix-shaped system.

"Who is he talking to?" Haruka said in a hushed voice that only the children could hear, and immediately, they all giggled simultaneously.

"Kenji-sama has always been like that, but whenever he does that, he finds a way to surprise us. I think he’s talking to someone, but we just can’t see it," Leo explained, adding his own speculation as to why Kenji would occasionally talk to himself.

"Really?" Haruka said as she began to think hard about who Kenji was talking to.

"Yes, tell me everything. I want to know everything," Kenji said with a bit of excitement and anticipation in his voice.

[Host, after contracting a legendary bloodline beast: The Cloud Moon Fox, you have successfully gained forty percent of your contracted beast’s powers.]

[Cloud Steps: This allows the host to walk on air for ten seconds before falling to the ground.]

[Heightened Agility and Strength: Host’s strength has been permanently increased by forty percent, and agility has also been increased by another forty percent.]

[Magic: Host has now gained the ability to harness the mana in the surrounding air to use spells. Warning! This ability can only be used on low-level spells. If high-level spells are used, then the host will become a victim of backlash!]

"Incredible!" Kenji exclaimed inwardly as he heard the new powers he had gained. He was incredibly happy to find out that his strength had now increased drastically from what it used to be.

Although he seemed strong now, it was only because the contract sacrifice was still in effect. Even now, it’s still in effect, which is why Shreya was still like this.

Once the effect ends, Kenji’s strength will return to his weaker self, and Shreya will return to her nagging guardian self.

"Well, let’s at least try one out," Kenji said as he told Shreya to activate the Cloud Steps ability.

[Cloud Steps ability... activated!]

Immediately, Kenji’s body began to defy gravity as it floated into the air!

"What the heck?!" Both the children and Haruka exclaimed simultaneously as they saw Kenji floating in the air.

Then suddenly, Kenji moved his feet in a walking manner, as if he was not actually standing on air but on invisible ground.

"Amazing!" he exclaimed loudly as he took another step, sending him higher into the air.

Seeing Kenji walk on air, the children’s admiration for him grew as only one thought was left in their minds: "Kenji-sama can even fly!"

On the other hand, Haruka seemed more shocked than anything as she recognized the style in which Kenji was walking on air.

*Th-this is the ability of my race: Cloud Steps! How could he have gained this ability?* she thought deeply, soon coming to the conclusion that Kenji had gained this ability after forging the contract with her.

But the craziest thing was, she knew a few things about beast tamers already, and she knew that the ability to use your tamed beast’s powers was impossible!

But here Kenji was, defying the impossible!

Crazy!

That was the word! This man is crazy!

"Whoa!" Kenji exclaimed once more as he took another daring step higher into the sky, but then he suddenly heard Shreya’s voice enter his ear.

[Ten seconds over. Ability Cloud Steps has been disabled.]

And with that, Kenji’s body no longer flew higher into the air but instead fell lower toward the ground!

"Aaahhhhhg!" Kenji exclaimed in fright as he found himself falling headfirst toward the hard, rocky ground!

As Kenji fell, he could see his life flashing before his eyes. Even though he was a bit stronger now, there was no way he was going to survive a fall from that height!

But suddenly, as his body was only a few feet away from the ground, he felt a soft hand holding onto his back, catching him from hitting the ground.

When he looked up to see who it was, he was a bit surprised and relieved to see that it was Haruka.

"I know we just met today, but isn’t it too soon for me to save your life after you had just saved mine?" she said in a playful manner as she slowly descended to the ground while holding onto Kenji in a princess carry.

"I guess so," Kenji said as he got down from her hand and gave her a slight bow as a thank-you for saving his life.

"Kenji-sama!" Suddenly, he turned his head to see his three little babies running up to him with small tears welling up in their eyes.

Seeing the tears, Kenji could feel his heart slowly breaking as he knelt down and gave them a hug. "I’m sorry to have made you worry. It was my fault for being reckless," Kenji said in an apologetic tone as he gave them small kisses.

Pow!

The three children, with anger in their hearts, immediately punched Kenji on his head!

"How dare you let us think that something bad was going to happen? Don’t you know how to fly?" Pheia said with an annoyed look on her face.

"Yeah! Don’t you ever do that again!" Leo and Leia said simultaneously as they gave Kenji another smack on his head.

"Ouch! Okay, okay, I promise not to do that again, I swear!" Kenji said as he begged for mercy while earnestly rubbing his head in pain.

*How are the tiny hands of six-year-old children this strong? Am I that weak?!*

"Well, alright then. Since you’ve apologized, we’ve forgiven y—"

Roarrr!

Before he could finish his sentence, a loud roar suddenly shook the ground below their feet as the dungeon gate near them began to shake violently!

"What’s happening?!" Haruka said in confusion as she felt a very strong aura exuding from the dungeon entrance.

[Host, due to the amount of mana in the air that you had already drained from the surroundings, the dungeon gate can no longer hold the dungeon boss, as a dungeon outbreak is about to occur,] Shreya said in alarm, warning Kenji of the situation.

Hearing this, Kenji’s eyes turned cold. "I thought there wasn’t a dungeon boss! Why didn’t I meet it inside?!"

[That’s because you only waited for the goons to come out and fight. You defeated the goons, but now it’s time for the boss to avenge them by killing you!]

"Okay then, how strong do you estimate this boss is? Could it be a bit stronger than Haruka?"

[...No!... It’s stronger than you and your tamed beast combined. Your chances of winning the battle are zero to none.]

"Well, we’re screwed!"
