Chapter 93: Under the tree

At last, Charlotte stood beneath the comforting tree, her usual sanctuary, but Dave wasn’t there.

Disappointment marked her expression as she wondered about Dave’s whereabouts. In the past, after his painful breakup, he would often roam around, seeking solace in the company of other women. Could he be doing the same now? Well, it wouldn’t be surprising if he was currently in one of their companies, he was a man after all.

Thinking about it, how was Ronald coping without her? Though they haven’t had sex, a man’s instincts could not be trusted. ’No, Ronald is not a man like that.’ She scolded herself and shook off the dirty thought.

She considered checking up on Dave, but the thought of encountering him in his usual irritating state gave her pause. She had given up hope that he would change his womanizing ways and consider her feelings. If it weren’t for Ronald, she might have wasted her life waiting for a man like Dave.

Deciding to return his phone when he came back, she turned to leave but then caught sight of someone familiar.

Her focus shifted to this person, and she recognized who it was. The man she had been searching for was standing nearby, lost in thought not far from the tree.

She approached him and stopped a couple of steps away. Initially, she had considered approaching him, but he appeared moody, which made her hesitate.

"Hey," she softly called out after some contemplation. There was no response, which deepened her worry. Dave had never been so preoccupied, regardless of his troubles. Given his reputation as a ladies’ man, it was unusual to see him so engrossed in thought.

"Dave!" She called out again, this time with a bit more volume.

Finally, she reached him, and he turned to acknowledge her presence, his surprise evident.

"I have been looking for you," she admitted.

"Hey, what’s going on?" Dave responded, clearly not expecting someone to be looking for him.

"You forgot this!" She held out a black phone, which Dave recognized as his own. He accepted it with gratitude.

"Thank you," he said, and she nodded before turning to walk away. Strangely, Dave felt even lonelier after she left, as if he had expected more from their encounter.

Even as he stood outside, he couldn’t shake the growing feelings he had for her. Love could be so puzzling, arising at the most inconvenient moments. She was already committed to another man, and Dave needed to shake himself out of it before things became awkward for both of them.

"Hey!" Charlotte called out, retracing her steps to where Dave stood.

"Yes?" Dave replied.

"Are you okay? You don’t seem well," she asked, noticing his mood. She couldn’t just walk away without understanding what was bothering Dave, especially considering his usually cheerful demeanor.

"I am fine, just needed some fresh air," he fibbed.

"No, something’s wrong! I don’t mean to intrude, but I am genuinely concerned about you. It’s hard to ignore that something’s amiss," she confessed honestly.

Dave examined her face, trying to determine if her concern stemmed from a romantic perspective or just friendly worry. Unfortunately, it seemed more like genuine friendliness, devoid of any traces of infatuation, and that saddened him. The affectionate look she used to give him had disappeared, she no longer appeared captivated by him.

"I... I am really okay. You shouldn’t worry," he repeated, attempting to reassure her with a playful smile, the kind he often used with women.

Fortunately, Charlotte believed him after seeing that smile and breathed a sigh of relief.

"Thank goodness. I have to go now," she said, turning to leave but was stopped by Dave’s firm grip on her wrist. She looked up, and Dave was holding her hand, appearing hesitant yet determined.

Dave couldn’t resist holding her back and finally mustered the courage to ask her out. He knew he might regret his words, but he was willing to take the risk.

"Would you like to go out?" he offered.

Charlotte widened her eyes, not expecting such an offer. Even when she cried out her eyes, Dave never offered to take her out. It was like....A changed Dave. She couldn’t explain what she felt, but she knew Dave was acting weird these days. While they were in the dark room together, he said some weird words and now, he was asking her out.

Gazing into his eyes, she couldn’t find a hint of mischievousness in them, they looked so sincere that she badly wanted to believe Dave was now a changed person with feelings.

No! She would never believe such a man like Dave, it was just an offer, nothing more.

"Alright," she agreed, and half smiled to assure him that she was going to go out with him.

"How about getting ready in an hour from now?" He asked.

"Okay, what type of place is it? I have to know to pick the right dress," She asked, so she could easily pick a dress instead of thinking on what to wear.

"Just something normal," he answered and she nodded her head in response. She looked down at his hand that was possessively holding her wrist and back to his eyes, indicating that he should let her go.

"Ahh, sorry about that!" He apologized and immediately let go of her wrist.

"It’s fine," and she left his side.

Once she was gone, Dave frowned and slapped himself repeatedly, angry that he suddenly asked her out in a weird manner. No matter how he tried, he would always find his way back into her hands. The girl he didn’t like to have around him back then was now a woman who he badly wanted to possess.

He was just going to be selfish for today and forget about her tomorrow. He could definitely do that, right?

An hour later.

Charlotte was done dressing up. Actually, she had prepared herself within twenty minutes but decided to stay seated in the room until an hour was up, so she wouldn’t look like she was excited for the outing. Moreover, Dave now saw her as a woman so he probably told her to get prepared within an hour because of how long it took women to get themselves ready.

But she had never been the typical woman, she always loved doing things as quickly as possible. She hated wasting time and she was good at managing her time. She smiled at how considerate Dave was being, after being neglected back then. It was funny how people quickly changed.

Once it was exactly an hour later, she ventured out of her room and walked her way down to the entrance of the mansion.

"Miss Charlotte, young master is waiting for you outside!" A maid walked up to her and informed her when she got to the entrance of the mansion. It looked like the maid had been standing there for a while, as she was quick to relay the information immediately she got there.

"Ohh, thanks." She thanked the maid, and promptly exited the mansion.

Dave was standing by a red sports car, his back leaning against it and his legs crossed as he played with his glasses. Charlotte used a minute to size him up and down and she was captivated by his look.

He looked sharp and alluring, he was wearing a blue top with a black jean and a pair of white sneakers, that made him look extravagant yet casual. If she vividly remembers, it was his fashion sense she fell for, before things got deep for her.

"Hi!" Dave waved at her, bringing back her attention to the real world. She didn’t realize she had been gauging at him for a while now.

"Hi!" She awkwardly replied back and walked up to him.

"Why are you wearing this?" He asked, finding what she wore weird. She was wearing a crop top, and a bummer short that exposed most of her body parts. He hated the thought of another man seeing her partly naked and wanted to strip her and wear her better clothes.

"Ahh, this. Are we not going to a club or a bar?" She asked, sounding so clueless that he felt ashamed of himself for the first time. He couldn’t blame her for thinking they were going to a bar parlor, since that was where he mostly frequented.

"It’s alright, let’s get going." He smiled and opened the car door for her in which she entered.

Taking his seat at the other side of the car, they zoomed off.

Back at the mansion.

Aurora had prepared varieties of Pasta, and Theresa was either not satisfied with the way it looked or tasted.

"Alright, let’s take a break. My fashion designer should be here already, we will be back." She began taking off hers and Aurora’s apron, then she led them out of the kitchen once they were done.

"Do I have to dress up for the surprise too?" Aurora was getting frustrated, and she was contemplating giving up.

"Definitely," Theresa answered.
