Chapter 79: Why now?

Sarah couldn’t help but feel puzzled when Dave was sent to fetch her instead of a maid. Despite being Luna, she couldn’t deny that Dave, as the Alpha’s brother, held a higher position within the pack.

"Well, in that case, I will take my leave," Dave glanced at Charlotte one last time before turning his back and walking away.

"That cunning man," Sarah muttered, glaring at his retreating figure. She then smiled at Charlotte and said, "I will be back soon," excusing herself to attend to the guests who wanted to see her.

Charlotte decided to retreat to her room to avoid any chance encounters with Dave. While trying to sneak back, she suddenly found herself dragged into a dark room and silenced with a firm hand to prevent her from making any noise.

Struggling to break free, Charlotte stopped when she heard a familiar groan and recognized the person holding her captive.

"It’s me, Dave," he whispered.

Charlotte’s heart raced with anxiety, memories of their encounter on the tree flashing through her mind.

"I... I need to go," she stammered, trying to find her way out. However, Dave held her back firmly.

"I will let you go once I get my answers," he said, embracing her from behind, his arms wrapped tightly around her waist.

"We are too close, what if someone sees us?" Charlotte pointed out, afraid of being caught in such an intimate position. But despite the risk, she found herself getting used to his embrace, his scent and touch comforting her.

"That’s why I brought you into a dark room. It will be less conspicuous," he whispered, his words igniting a hidden desire within her. She longed to hear more tender words from him, finding them soothing.

"What answers do you need?" Charlotte asked, feigning impatience to leave the room when, in truth, a part of her wanted to stay with him.

’I am engaged,’ she scolded herself inwardly, reminding herself of her upcoming marriage, which nearly happened earlier if not for an unforeseen accident.

Ever since Ronald entered her life and treated her with love and respect, she thought she had moved on from her infatuation with Dave. She even attempted to arrange a marriage through her pack’s connections, fearing the idea of an unloving union. She wanted Dave to love her the same way she did to avoid getting divorced later on.

However, seeing Dave at the wedding party reignited old feelings, and she couldn’t help but be drawn to him again. Despite his promiscuous ways, she still loved him genuinely and wished for his reciprocation.

"Charlotte," Dave whispered, calling out her name in a seductive tone. Though he didn’t intend to sound that way, he couldn’t help it, as he was used to using such tactics when pursuing someone new.

"Dave, this is wrong. I shouldn’t be here," Charlotte tried to break free from his grip, but he held on tightly and pleaded, "Just for a while, please."

The sincerity in his plea was evidence enough that he couldn’t resist Charlotte as he did years ago. She had grown into a strong, confident woman who presented a challenge to him, and he desired to conquer her.

Charlotte found herself succumbing to Dave’s pleading voice, allowing her hands to slowly drop to her sides in response to his plea.

"Are you feeling unwell?" Charlotte asked with concern as she felt Dave’s shaky breath on her neck. She wondered if he might be sick.

"Always worrying about me," Dave replied in a hushed tone, blowing warm air on her neck.

The sensation made Charlotte shiver, and a soft moan escaped her lips, catching Dave’s attention.

Suddenly, a memory surged within her, and she frowned, clenching her fists on both sides.

"Dave, I am not one of your playthings. I know you don’t like me, and honestly, I don’t care anymore. So, let go of me," she warned, causing Dave to pause in his movements.

"I don’t see you as one of my playthings," he corrected her, but his answer didn’t satisfy Charlotte.

Turning her body to face him, though they were still in darkness, she questioned, "Then do you like me?"

"I... I..." Dave was at a loss for words. He wasn’t sure himself as it had been a while since he genuinely liked someone. But he knew he couldn’t resist Charlotte like he used to back then.

"You can’t even form a lie. Stop playing with my feelings, don’t try to seduce me. I am engaged, for goodness’ sake!" Charlotte warned, her anger evident as she had moved past her infatuation with him.

"I don’t have an answer yet, Charlotte, and believe me, I don’t intend to interfere with your engagement. Though I would love to mate with you...no I meant..." Dave stumbled over his words, expressing himself in a way he didn’t intend.

"Yeah, you can never get enough of those women. And even if you have an answer, wake up, Dave. I am soon to be married!" She yelled at him, reminding him of her impending wedding.

"Why did you even bring me in here?" She demanded, recalling that he had said he needed answers from her.

"You looked so sad when I came for Sarah. Is something bothering you?" Dave finally asked what he had been curious about, before his wolf instincts took over.

Scoffing, Charlotte replied, "You never once cared if I was hurt when I was infatuated with you. But now you care?" She couldn’t believe that the same guy who abandoned her in the rain, refusing to provide her with clothes when she needed them, now seemed concerned for her well-being.

Dave’s past actions had deeply hurt her, and she wondered why she was only realizing it now.

"Charlotte, I know you are engaged, but I want to make amends for my mistakes. I never saw you as a woman before, but I see you as one now," he confessed, his voice sounding desperate. Suddenly, the lights in the room switched on, and Charlotte could see the sincerity in Dave’s expression.

"Why now?" She asked, her eyes brimming with tears.

"I think I want you," he answered honestly.
