Chapter 77: Conflicted emotions
After Damien’s departure, the guard assisted Aurora out of bed and guided her to her residence within the mansion, which was situated some miles away.
Aurora allowed the guard to lead her, realizing that her past with her mate had been far worse than her current situation. Her thoughts wandered to Scarlet, wondering if Damien had locked her up as well.
"I must find my friend, please, just give me a moment!" She implored, tugging at the guard’s wrist.
"No," the guard declined, maintaining a firm grip on her hand, hurrying back to the mansion. He knew it was better not to annoy Damien by fulfilling her request, considering she held no significant position within the pack.
"Then will you help me check on her?" Aurora changed her plea, and the guard appeared to be moved by her request. If he were to check on Scarlet’s whereabouts while keeping Aurora locked up, it wouldn’t cause any trouble for him since he was in charge of guarding her room.
"Okay," he eventually agreed, and Aurora felt relieved. She wouldn’t bend to Damien’s authority, she didn’t care about his wishes. Men who only saw women as tools doesn’t deserve their respect.
"Her name is Scarlet, and she works in the mansion. You can inquire about her in the omega’s quarters," Aurora provided the information, and the guard nodded in understanding.
Finally, Aurora could relax, if Scarlet hadn’t been punished by Damien, she could endure being locked up as long as that arrogant alpha wanted.
Upon reaching her room, the guard locked the door from the outside and went in search of her friend.
Aurora stood by the window to breathe in the fresh air, which helped ease her troubled mind.
Before Damien’s arrival, even with Theresa’s authoritative voice that scared everyone, it had been bearable.
But Damien was a complete jerk, sometimes acting like a sadist, and he constantly confused her with his changing personality. One moment, he acted like the most romantic man on earth, and the next, he became a crazy tyrant.
She regretted not finding a way to avoid signing the contract. Then, she wouldn’t be facing all these problems. If she had claimed she couldn’t bear children, he couldn’t dip his hands into her stomach to confirm her lie.
He would have no choice but to let her go, but considering the technology’s detection capabilities, she was bound to fall into his contract trap anyway.
Leaving the window, she lay on the bed and fell asleep.
Meanwhile, in Damien’s study, Enoch had been summoned and could sense Damien’s anger filling the room. He wondered if it had something to do with Scarlet.
"Dami, I am sorry about what happened with Scarlet..." Enoch began, but Damien interrupted him, raising his hand to stop him from talking.
"I want you to find out about Aurora’s family and her past," Damien ordered, staring intently into Enoch’s eyes, his expression serious and troubling Enoch. Why was Damien suddenly interested in her pack? Could he be in love with her?
"Why?" Enoch cautiously asked.
"It has something to do with her frequent sudden shock," Damien replied, lighting a cigarette and taking a drag before exhaling.
"Was she always like this?" Enoch inquired, curious.
"I need the information by tomorrow morning," Damien dismissed Enoch’s question and commanded him. Enoch didn’t press further and hesitantly left Damien’s study.
Unless there was more to it, why would Damien want to know about Aurora’s past? Enoch already sensed that the contract was bound to fail, given how comfortable Damien was in Aurora’s presence.
Using his mindlink, Enoch contacted one of his assistants and requested, "Gather all the information you can find on Aurora."
"Sure, boss. When do you need it?" The assistant asked from the other end.
"By tomorrow morning," Enoch replied before ending the communication. He considered checking on Aurora’s well-being himself in case Scarlet woke up and asked. He could have asked Damien, but with Damien’s current mood, it was better for him to handle it.
Arriving at the hospital, Enoch inquired about Aurora at the reception, but they seemed clueless about her.
"The alpha brought her in," he explained that she had been brought in by the Alpha and they seemed to finally know who he was inquiring about.
"Oh, that one. The Alpha ordered a guard to lock her up in her room," one of the nurses recalled and continued with her work.
"Lock her up? Why?" Enoch was confused about why Damien would lock up a patient. Could it be because she tried to ignore him?
"I have no idea," the nurse replied, shaking her head.
Enoch sighed and headed back to the mansion, heading towards Aurora’s room. When he reached there, he encountered a guard standing watch.
"Is she inside?" Enoch asked.
"Yes, beta," the guard replied.
"Let me in," Enoch requested, but the guard blocked his path, standing firm.
"What are you doing?" Enoch questioned, raising an eyebrow at the guard’s actions.
"The Alpha instructed not to let anyone in," the guard explained, diligently following his orders.
"I am not just anyone," Enoch pointed out as he moved closer to the door, but the guard blocked his path again. The Alpha had not specifically excluded the beta, but the guard feared for his life and couldn’t risk disobeying Damien’s orders.
"I...I apo...logize, beta. The Alpha’s instructions were clear, and I can’t let anyone in, my life is at stake." The guard stammered, bowing his head in apology. Even if Enoch was a beta, the guard couldn’t take chances with Damien’s strict commands.
"So you won’t allow me in?" Enoch pressed, putting the guard in a difficult position.
"I am sorry, beta. I wish I could let you in, but I can’t," the guard replied with hesitation. Enoch reluctantly walked away from Aurora’s room, concerned that someone might cause trouble when she woke up and wanted to see Aurora.
If only he could have checked on Aurora’s condition, it would have been enough to convince Scarlet.
Enoch wondered why Damien was suddenly furious and what Aurora could have done to be locked up. He considered going to Damien’s study room, but given his sour mood earlier, he decided it was better to talk to him later.
Meanwhile, in another part of the mansion, Sarah was in her mother’s room, helping her organize the expensive fabrics given to her by Theresa. However, her mind was preoccupied, and her lack of focus did not escape her mother’s notice.
"Sarah," Laura called out to her daughter, joining her on the couch.
Startled from her thoughts, Sarah finally responded, "Mum."
"What’s wrong, darling?" Laura asked.
"I want that girl gone," Sarah answered, her eyes turning teary as she thought about Aurora.
"What happened?" Laura asked, concerned, moving closer to Sarah and wondering what Aurora could have done now.
"I finally got the chance to spend time with Damien, but Aurora acted sick and redirected the Alpha’s attention to her," Sarah explained, twisting the situation, and began sobbing.
Laura hugged her daughter and gently patted her back. "What did I teach you?" she asked, trying to console Sarah.
"To face my enemies with a strong heart," Sarah replied amid her sobs, wiping away her tears.
"Exactly. If you show people your emotions, they will use it against you," Laura imparted, looking directly into Sarah’s eyes.
"Yes, mother," Sarah acknowledged her mother’s teaching. Thanks to Laura’s strict upbringing, Sarah had learned to hide her emotions and face challenges head-on. Even when people rejected and ignored her, she remained resolute.
"Now be a good girl and smile for me," Laura encouraged, making Sarah blush. Laura already had plans to eliminate Aurora, but they needed to be careful not to become the culprits. After all, the patient dog gets the fattest bone.
"Just a little more time, and she will be gone," Laura assured Sarah before resuming the task of arranging fabrics into the box.
Laura had plans to eliminate Aurora completely, but she preferred to be patient rather than being sloppy and end up being the guilty one. The opportunity always comes when you least expect it, and Laura could feel her chance nearby.
A knock on the door interrupted them, and Sarah asked the person to come in. It was Charlotte, Sarah’s close friend. Sarah quickly composed herself, wearing a bright smile. Although her mother warned her not to get too close to friends, she trusted Charlotte more than anyone else.
She had wanted to show her true side to Charlotte, but her mother believed friends couldn’t be trusted so she shouldn’t act so close to her. And even though her mother was right, Charlotte was different from every other friend that she knew.
She was a good listener, barely held grudges, ready to apologize when she was wrong. Charlotte was a better person compared to her and she was the only one she could never have ill-intentions about.
"Hey, Laura!" Charlotte greeted both mother and daughter warmly. Laura also liked Charlotte compared to Sarah’s other friends.
"I will leave you two to talk," Laura said, leaving the room.
"Why are you here instead of exploring the pack as the future Luna?" Charlotte asked sincerely, taking a seat beside Sarah.
"I just came back and decided to help my mother. What about you? Have you been enjoying the pack so far?" Sarah asked, momentarily forgetting that Charlotte was already familiar with the pack from her previous visits.
"I practically know every corner of the pack," Charlotte replied, and they both laughed together.
