Chapter 197: The driver

"Are you okay?" he asked, noticing her mood seemed a bit off.

"Yes, I am fine," she replied with a forced smile. His curiosity deepened, sensing something was amiss.

"Are you aware that you are pregnant?" After a brief silence, he asked, suspecting this might be the reason for her strange behavior.

"Yes, I know." Her response was so reluctant and quiet that he felt a wave of anxiety. Did she not want to carry his child? Was she unprepared for motherhood?

"Damien, it’s not what you are thinking. I’m..." She trailed off as she noticed he had picked up on her unease, prompting him to step closer.

"You are what?" He asked softly.

"Afraid," she whispered, her eyes filling with tears.

Damien didn’t say a word. Instead, he embraced her, gently patting her back. He knew words wouldn’t ease her fears, especially with his impending departure.

"What if something happens?" She asked through her quiet sobs, her voice tinged with fear as she considered the risks to their child.

"Shhhh," he soothed, continuing to stroke her back until she eventually calmed down.

"I feel so sleepy," she murmured. He lifted her into his arms and carried her to the bed, gently tucking her in.

"Don’t go," she pleaded, half-asleep, as she reached out to him.

"Alright," he said with a smile, climbing into bed beside her and pulling her close as they both drifted off to sleep.

The next morning...

"Everything is ready," Enoch informed Damien, who was in his study room, signing off on some documents.

Dressed sharply in a navy blue suit, his hair perfectly styled, Damien was preparing for the day’s mission to lure Lucas out. Everything was set, and all that remained was to execute the plan.

"Who’s driving?" Damien asked while continuing to sign papers.

"Timotei. He’s the only skilled driver we have here at the pack. The rest are at the border," Enoch replied, and Damien let out a sigh.

"That will do. And the men?" he asked, handing Enoch another stack of signed papers.

"You would meet them there," Enoch confirmed, earning a nod of approval from Damien.

Everything was going according to plan, except for the unexpected arrival of his child, a news he hadn’t anticipated.

"What about her? Will you really leave without seeing her?" Enoch asked, referring to Aurora.

"There will be no leaving if I see her," Damien replied, and Enoch sighed, understanding that to succeed, they would have to break hearts and face losses.

"Alright, here’s the last document. It’s time to go," Damien said, handing Enoch the final paper before standing up to leave.

As Damien exited his study with Enoch close behind, he was relieved that Enoch wasn’t pressing him with questions. Becoming a father had changed him, he no longer wanted to risk his life as readily as before.

Getting to the car, Damien stared at the pack house once more and entered the car.

"Come back," Enoch muttered to himself as he watched Damien’s car ride off.

As they rode away, Damien noticed the driver had been awkwardly avoiding his gaze and wouldn’t talk since they left the pack, causing him to suspect it was not Timotei driving.

"You devilish brother, did you think I wouldn’t figure out your plan?" Just as Damien was about to text Enoch for Timotei’s physique, the man behind the wheel spoke, a familiar yet unpleasant voice coming out of the man.

He should have known something was wrong the moment the driver didn’t step out to open the door for him. That sly of a brother, Dave!

"Well, I hope you have figured your possible death out too." Tossing his phone aside, he irritatedly responded and opened the window.

"Well your mate wanted an assurance, she could not trust you to keep your plan in check. Good idea though," he revealed, earning a dissatisfied look from Damien.

"My mate?" He repeated.

Shaking his head, Dave made a tsk sound and said, "Brother, she is your mate and even if you haven’t claimed her, she knows what you are feeling. I have been there," remembering Charlotte, the only woman he wants to be with. It was a good feeling realizing they were mates, and even more lovely that they would spend the rest of their days together.

Damien chuckled, finding Aurora amusing. He knew she was already aware of his plan to leave today, he just wasn’t sure if she was fine with it. So she had her plans?

"Brother, my hands are tired, let’s switch places." Dave urged.

"You should have thought of that before listening to my mate," Damien said, causing Dave to frown.

"Such a heartless being. You know, if she had not promised to help me secure Charlotte’s family trust, I wouldn’t have agreed." Revealing the reason he agreed to the deal, he said and busted into laughter.

"My brother is in love, and with the same woman he is treated like trash. Life is full of wonders," Damien mocked, shoving his past mistakes on his face.

Charlotte was a nice girl, his stupid brother was just too blind to see it was true love. She loved him and endured watching him sleep around with other ladies, but still, he didn’t acknowledge her.

"Says the brother who almost lost his mate to his stupid ego," Dave countered, throwing a smirk at him through the front mirror.

"But I do not need to beg her family to marry her," Damien continued, making a huge comeback that almost had Dave losing control of the wheel.

"If you kill me, your deal is over. Let’s hope you even make it out alive," Damien added and triumphantly smiled.

"As much as I want you dead, I would lose a huge deal so I will try to keep your ass alive," Dave said and resumed driving, not engaging Damien in another conversation till they reached Lucas’s pack.

"Is this even a pack house?" They had reached Lucas’s pack and luckily, thanks to Lucas’s foolish idea to take all his men to war, they were able to enter the pack disguised as a family friend.

"Tell me about it," also staring at the pack house from inside the car, Damien commented.

"Well, we are here."
